Transfer Resale to Direct, get Direct perks?

This idea came up when looking to book 10 day trip at Aulani in a Grand Villa. I have two memberships and was thinking it would be nice to just book with one membership for simplicity if I didn't have enough points. I read that transferring points between memberships once per year is allowed. So...I'm curious, if I transfer resale points to a direct contract, would that be a way to use resale points effectly as direct points, with ability to book RIV, DCL, other newer properties down the line, and so on? If so, seems like a way to more mileage if needed from resale.

It doesn't work that way. Restrictions on points remain with those points even if they are used along with qualified points. You would not be able to use the restricted resale points along with the direct points to book RIV (unless they are RIV points), trade out to DCL, ABD or regular Disney hotel rooms.

Yup, nice try, but as stated it doesn't work. The only thing it allows you to do is combine them in one eligible booking.

I don’t think it has changed, but the points also don’t show up online. You have to call MS to use them.

It’s all about the points and not what else an owner has or type of membership.

Resale points bought since 2012 can’t be used for cruises and those bought since 2019 can’t be used for RIV and future resorts.

As mentioned, transferring doesn’t change that.

I transferred some for banking purposes and they do show up on my Direct contract online...so that has changed I guess.

Just to clarify for everyone, points don’t go into a contract, but a membership.

DVC creates a temporary contract in your account that shows the points.

But, as you mention, then can be seen online when you go to book with them.

Unless something has recently changed, my understanding is that you have to call MS to use transferred points prior to the 7 month window opening (even though they show in your account). Once the 7 month window opens, you can book online with the transferred points.
