I would really like to take my kids to see TSO at the holidays to the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence R.I. The tickets aren't terribly expensive, about $50.00, but money is pretty tight. I am just wondering if anyone knows of any sort of discount or presale codes that might help Thanks a bunch!

I'm with you. If I can find a discount, I would LOVE to go this year.

I have always wanted to see their christmas show! Has anyone been that can give some reviews on it??

I also really, really, really want to go see the Rockettes christmas show as well!

I've seen them twice...it is one of the most fabulous shows I've seen! I'd go every year if I could fit it in my schedule.

I know it may seem that tickets are expensive, but in my estimation they are actually one of the less-expensive show tickets around. When we've been (at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia) I actually prefer to sit in the second level off the floor where the seats are cheaper. I think a broad view of the stage and performance area is far better to truly experience all the show has to offer.

I've seen the TSO Christmas Show 5 or 6 years in a row - an ever changing group of us go each year - a little party with holiday food before hand - then away we go - only way I've found to save money on tickets is to go to the place they are playing as soon as tickets sales are announced and buy them there - it saves us about $7 each ticket on handling fees - the show is hard to describe - best light show ever -and the music - WOW! I agree with getting seats a little higher up and farther back - it's an amazing experience!

We saw it at the Dunk 2 yrs ago, and it was awesome! They even had "snow" coming down on the audience during one of the numbers. They went, if I remember correctly, for a full 3 hrs, without a break! then the same group goes on for the second show an hr later. I don't know how they do it - they expend soooo much energy doing the show.

That being said, it is a bit pricy for a family, especially right before Christmas, and the tickets usually vary in price, depending on where you are sitting. We couldn't find any discounts back then, and did pay a bit more for excellent seats. Plan on going again next year.

Word of warning if you go. Allow PLENTY of time to get inside. The number of cars trying to get there for the 4 oclock show was incredible, so I can only imagine what it was like for the 8 oclock show. Parking was in the convention center/weston garage, and it took forever to get out of there afterwards!!!

So you guys have actually talked me into going to TSO instead of the Rockettes I think!!

Just got my tickets for their show last week during the fan club presale... I'm not sure but I think the presale ended last Friday.

As far as discounts, I don't think I have ever seen any... but it is probably the cheapest show that they have in our town.

They do sometimes have tickets that are further from the stage that are cheapers.

Now a bit of warning for those that don't know what they are getting into.

The show is basically a Heavy Metal version of Christmas music with a bit of classical music thrown in... so don't go thinking Air Supply.

Also if you take your kids I would strongly suggest you get some of those foam ear plugs and make sure they fit in their ears prior to going. It can be very loud and I wouldn't want my kids ears to be ringing for the next 3 days after its over.

The show itself is very much an over the top light and pyro show... if you want the best view of those effects don't get seats too close... if you want to actually feel the heat from the flames and see the people then try to get as close as possible on the floor.

One last thing, for those that haven't gone before... after the night performance the band will sign autographs at a meet and greet area... if that is something you want to do then don't go to the matinee show because it does not include a meet and greet only the night showing.

Our family saw TSO in Atlanta last Christmas and hated every moment of it. We actually left after about 30 minutes and the tickets were not cheap. It is very heavy metal, you will not recognize any Christmas songs at all. We paid a lot of money for a lousy show.

A friend of mine said the same thing. She went last year and said it was nothing like it was in the past. I want to see it too!

we love it! We went 3 years in a row. Had first row 2 years in a row. Yes, its Heavy Metal. Some of the band members were from Metal bands, like Metal Church and Savatage. They alternate every year , I think some go on the East tour and Some on the West then the next year they usually switch. If you are not into heavy metal, or loud music, its not something you will enjoy. I know that alot of people think because TSO is popular that its a chirstmas type show for families but, for most its not. It is a clean show without any bad language in it. I bring my 14 year old son and he loves it. But, he loves heavy metal like me! :) They also sometimes have a special surprise famous band/singer who plays with them.
The show does have some of their versions of Christmas songs and they have a narrator that tells a story. each song is like a part of the story.

As far as a review goes, it was a good show when I saw it in State College, PA last November. A few things to keep in mind:

1) Know the group. Youtube them beforehand, it's not an "orchestra", it's more of a rock group with an orchestra backing. I can't imagine going and expecting a chamber music concert! :goodvibes Not that I don't go to normal orchestra concerts too, but this is not one of them

2) It's a LONG concert. We thought the first part, the 90 minute or so Christmas "story" they were doing was it. We ended up with another 90 or so of stuff from their two non-Christmas CDs too. So $50 for a 3 hour show is pretty reasonable in my opinion, though that doesn't make it any less expensive at least know you'll be getting your money's worth in terms of time!

3) It's LOUD. The one complaint I had was the sound quality. It's probably just how live music tends to go, but the electric guitars/drums/electric violin vastly overpower the rest of the orchestra and its quite loud. So don't expect your favorites to sound as pretty and balanced as they do on the disk. This may vary by venue. But get a seat way in the back, especially if you have children. You'll be able to see and hear fine, I promise. They have giant screens with visuals and giant fireballs are viewable at any distance. Plus your ears will thank you! Try not to be too high up though if you can. The nosebleed seats may put you at level with all the crazy spotlights and light effects which can be a bit blinding right in your face. Again, varies by venue but you probably have a good idea of what the shape of your local spot is.

We've been going each year for years... it really hasn't changed much music wise... they added a few songs from Beethoven's Last Night in the second half but otherwise the music in the first half seems to stay very constant... the lighting seems to change more than the music... but each year the first half with the narrator reciting poetry that links the songs together stays the same.

But if you had only gone because of hearing their Christmas Canon song or Christmas in Sarajevo then you would be in for a rather shocking surprise... if you can't listen to Savatage then you probably wont last through a TSO concert... I'm sure there are people each show that leave early because they don't know what they are getting into.... this is not the Rockettes.

Which reminds me, if you had a kid with epilepsy this would probably not be a good show to go to... it has a lot of strobe effects which might be a trigger.

I've also seen people that bring and wear sun glasses... frankly when we were on the floor one year I wished I had them myself the lights can get very intense.

I have been to 14 TSO shows. I have seen both touring casts (East & West). Musicians and vocalists are among the most talented that I have ever seen and heard :thumbsup2 , and I have seen over 100 concerts in my 60 years.
If the music is too loud, you are too old!

We go to TSO every year (this year will be our 7th? maybe). It is awesome. There are 2 parts. The first part is the story part with the narrator - my favorite part. If you have the CD, it is The Lost Christmas Eve. I tear up every time. The second part is where they play different Heavy Metal songs. I will admit, it isn't my favorite as I'm not into Heavy Metal, but I sit through it because I love the 1st portion SO MUCH.

As for discounts, the past 2 years I have gotten tickets right when they go on sale to the public for $25/each - the cheap section. (I go to Grand Rapids, MI show).

A funny story - when DH and I first got together, I told him I wanted to go see TSO. He said....ok....reluctantly, but did it because I wanted to (we both had never been). Within 30 seconds of the show, he turned to me "THIS IS AWESOME!!" and 30 seconds after that "CAN WE COME AGAIN????!!!?". It is NOT LIKE Manheim Steamroller (who we saw a couple years ago and about DIED of boredom).

Okay, so when I asked for codes I didn't quite expect the responses! :) I am a little freaked out now that we might not like the show. My son LOVES heavy metal, I don't love it. I love the TSO Christmas CD and music n there, but kind of afraid now that this may not be my deal...........wondering......

TSO doesnt give discounts on their tickets. The only discount you might get is from the ticket outlet if they ever have one. The fan club is free, and they let you buy tickets before the public. I didnt do it this year, I want to experience it from the side of the stage instead of the front row. We are short so we cant sit anywhere on the floor except front row!
I would recommend watching some of it on YOUTUBE so you can see if its OK with you first.

I just looked at their schedule and sadly, the closet they are to me is 2 hours away. :(

If you aren't sure, but are willing to try.. I would suggest you get cheap seats at the end at the end opposite of the stage about half way up... it will be far enough away your ears wont bleed, will give you a good view of the show and if you don't like it you wont be wasting a lot of money.

If you do like it then next year I would say join their fan club (free) and try to get some good seats on the floor.... also since you aren't sure about it you might also just go for the matinee and not the night show (unless you think your son wants some autographs, then do the night show and he can get autographs and usually a guitar pick or two from the band at the meet and greet).
