Training the Disney Photographers

I haven't gotten married yet and done my MK shoot but I don't understand how they can get creative with the castle :confused3

Are there places to take creative shots? All I expect from the pictures is me and my DF in front of a castle and the carousel. I was just curious because I am very confused. Do you mean like different locations in the park? :confused3

you can do so much with photographer with a little flash and maybe changing th lens of the camera, I have seen some great mk shoots with what they call a fish eye lens which gives a different agle to the picture as its curved. Also they could learn to zoom that woudl give them a different angle to the standard pictures in front of the castle. They need to add more flash to get the better pictures when its low lighting which most of the mk shoots are.

there are lots of ways you can have photos infront of a castle or on a carousel ... you just need a creative and use not just the castle, but all the props around to get some of these so called "Creative" shots

Im sure that once you have been on the shoot and you get a creative photographer you will understand.

For example, a shot of a formula 1 car going round a circuit is pretty basic, but when you have a photographer with a creative flaire take it then it's a whole different ball game because he can use different settings - different angles, different backgrounds

Amanda's (princessbride103030 I think) had beautiful shots, Creative one's meaning the lighting. SOme shots created awesome shadow lighting or the lighting from the castle created a beautiful archway shot.

Summer (I forget her username now:sad2:) also had gorgeous shots.

summers shots were fantastic put i beleive she had paul who has now left disney.

You can create some fantastic shoots with the backdrops they have you just need a creative eye to take them

I'm one of the ones who complained a LOT about our MK shoot.

Our wedding was almost a year ago - in fact, we are getting ready to go down to Disney for our 1 year anniversary soon. October 29th.

When we complained about the quality AND quantity of shots taken, we kept being told that they couldn't understand why we were upset, they couldn't see anything wrong with the pictures, and after all, we were only seeing the proofs, we had no idea what the pictures would look like after they "touched them up". And that they don't guarantee how many pictures you'll get, and that we had gotten quite a few, certainly as many as anyone else.

But I had seen so many other people post their beautiful MK sessions on-line, I couldn't help but be EXTREMELY disappointed with ours.

The concessions they gave us were - they allowed us to pick which photos would be our "good" ones that go in the album instead of them picking them, and we could tell them what we thought was wrong with the pictures so they could attempt to "fix" it. Well, that's only 12 total of the photos. And we didn't get nearly as many photos as most of the other people I've seen - not as many as LurkyLoo (though I will admit, LL, yours are one of the first I've actually seen that rivals ours for being bad shots! At least your photographer DID manage to take the balcony shot without it looking like he was aiming the camera up your noses, though. Our balcony shots, all 3, count'em 3!!!! - are basically worthless, because they are at such a distance that I doubt they will be able to bring them in closer without losing a lot of definition, and even if they do, they look like he was just standing under the balcony, aiming up at us, taking pictures of our nose hairs. That was one of the shots I wanted the most.) They also agreed not to put the pictures in the album as they are supposed to do, since they are basically permanently mounted, and we want the pictures in our own picture/scrapbook we are putting together. And they offered that we could have the shoot done again. Of course, the expense and time involved with that... getting the gown cleaned, hair and makeup done, I wouldn't have my flowers unless we bought those again, and of course that was assuming we'd be down there again within a year, which we didn't know for sure at the time we were making the decision. And I know I've put on some weight since the wedding, so I'm not too sure I could wear my dress now anyway.

Oh, not to mention the fact that they kept stressing to us that we shouldn't worry - we were only seeing the proofs, not the final pictures, and that the final pictures would look much better. Well, after talking (via e-mail) back and forth quite a few times, we finally got to the truth of all that, too. The only pictures that would be "fixed" in any way would be our 12 album shots. The rest of the pictures would just be straight prints, unaltered in any way. And if we buy the cd to have the digital proofs in 3 years (5 years? which is it to get the lower price, I forget?), none of the edits for even those 12 pictures will be on the cd. We will be getting just the raw digital images. Not to mention the fact that all the digital editing in the world can't fix a cameraman taking pictures from underneath like he's shooting pics for the Haunted Mansion promos or something.

I've had such trouble looking at the pictures and dealing with them that we haven't managed to give them the responses back on which pictures to print, so we still don't have our pictures back from the shoot because of it. I get angry again every time I look at them. There are shadows across our faces, there are posts and ropes for line queues in the pictures with us (because the photographer couldn't be bothered to move them out of the way, I guess - and I'm not talking far in the background, I mean we are posed right next to them; basically, posed between the knight, and the queue posts.) He didn't bother to get a variety of lighting with the castle, so some of the shots with the castle I actually like, I HATE the color in the background. And at that time in the morning, it changes quickly, so it wouldn't have been a big deal to snap off one with each color.

And attitude? Yes, we got a LOT of attitude. We had an intimate wedding, and we hired Misty. BTW, she and her husband did an INCREDIBLE job - we went to a number of places around the parks (outside the parks, oubviously) to get pictures, and got some really great shots. And tons of them.

But the first question our photographer asked (I didn't remember the photographer's name, however, after seeing some other posts people had put on here, I went looking around, and ended up seeing a picture that makes me pretty sure now that I do know who the photographer was. Since I've posted such detail about what our problems were, I won't post the name of the photographer - suffice it to say that others on here seem to have also had problems with the same person) was if Disney was photographing our wedding that day too. When he found out they weren't, we got the third degree, asking us why we went with an outside photographer, him telling us how Disney could have done everything just as well or better, grilling us on who our photographer was, and having a real attitude about the whole thing.

To top it off, he was late. He was sick. Now, I can feel for someone who is sick, but.... we paid a lot of money for that photo shoot. If he was too sick to do the job, he should have called and gotten someone to cover for him. And what made us even LESS sympathetic about the whole thing is the fact that from the way he acted as he was sick and from a few things he said, we both were very convinced that his illness was, shall we say, "self-inflicted". :drinking1 :furious:

Ahh...ok, that's my rant on the situation. I really hope that anyone else still working on getting their MK shoot done gets some of the very beautiful shots that I've seen on here in the past. I'm still going to get our pictures eventually, but I am disappointed, and I just hope that fades a little more with time. I know, though, that at the price I paid, it was a close thing as to whether or not we would get the MK shoot, and had it been any more, we would not have gotten it.

To have paid that much for something that was just not up to par is just not right. And Disney needs to acknowldege the problem and do something about it.

(edited because I discovered I now am pretty sure I do know who our photographer was....)

haha.. I wasn't crazy about our balcony shots either!! We basically had double chins.

Sorry you had trouble with you MK shoot..

And we didn't get nearly as many photos as most of the other people I've seen - not as many as LurkyLoo (though I will admit, LL, yours are one of the first I've actually seen that rivals ours for being bad shots!

:rotfl2: I'm not sure how I feel about my growing reputation as the one with the worst Magic Kingdom pictures!

If it makes you feel any better, I know exactly how you feel. I get a kind of sinking, sick feeling every time I look at our pictures and think about how good they could have been :sad2: Plus there's the utter disbelief that DPS can't see what's wrong with these pictures and obviously doesn't care whether customer is happy with them! ....

I have heard that there soon will be a website to show samples of disneys photographers work. This is meant to be ready within the next few months.

Speaking of sinking feelings, I've had one in my stomach for a couple weeks now and after reading this thread, it's getting worse. We have Ty as our photographer and we recently had our phone call with him to go over the wedding details. He repeatedly said the wrong date and location for the ceremony and dessert party, levaing us wondering if he would actually show up on the day of the wedding. He barely talked and it really seemed at moments that he wasn't even on the phone anymore. I mean we don't need our own personal wedding cheerleader :cheer2: , but a little enthusiasm goes a long way. (P.S. I've been dying to use that graphic!) There were only 2 simple shots that were really important to DF and I. He said neither would be possible because it would be "too difficult". We only wanted to go from Italy to France for a few photos (and we have the coach to take us so, it wouldn't take a long time to get there). Also, I wanted a photo on the staircase and balcony in Italy Courtyard between the store and the restaurant. He said we couldn't use the balcony because, get this, they tried to use it one time and had to lift the girl's dress over the rail because it was too narrow for her to walk on with her gown. So, ever since that shoot, they don't use the balcony anymore. What?!? :confused3 (Meanwhile, what was the girl wearing while they were lifting her gown over the balcony to her...come ON!) I hung up and just had a bad feeling about the photography. DF, ever the optomist, said maybe he is really creative and sometimes creative genius lacks organization. Then we had our Disney Videographer call and it was the total opposite. She was fantastic and completely helpful. She had wonderful ideas and really made us feel like we were going to love our video. She let us come up with some neat ideas too and I really feel good about the whole thing. She exemplified true Disney customer service. In my mind, this is what we're paying for, that special excitement (pixie dust) and Disney quality that you know will surpass your expectations. I've felt it in every aspect of this wedding, except for that phone call.

We also have the MK photo shoot, but we aren't sure who will be the photographer for that.

The bottom line is that I haven't felt completely comfortable with Ty since the phone call. We were thinking of calling our WP, telling her our experience and asking if we should change photographers. After reading this thread, I'm really getting nervous about our photos. However, he came recommended for his journalistic style, which is really what we are going after. We just don't know what to do. My gut is telling me to make the change, but I'm constantly overreacting to things and can't tell whether this is warranted or not. What do you think?

a couple of people have had him recently and have complained about him yet others have said he was great, If you do not feel comfortable I would change it.

There are alot of good people that do photos with disney such as amy and vicki i have seen some great pics from them

It really disturbs me to read all the negative reviews about Disney photography. We had disney photo for our daughter's wedding recently and we were very happy and the pictures came out wonderful!!!! We had Mike Strickland and another man name Joe (I don't know his last name) I am thinking it might be Duncan because I have read that some people had him too. Mike was very good and did all the shots that she wanted. They were on time and we even had them photography the rehearsal dinner for us. We also used Disney for the video and it came out beautiful!!! She had upgraded the package and received six copies of the DVD so that both parents and even her sister could have a copy. Anytime I have had questions about any photo orders that I have submitted I have had prompt replies by email or phone. I hope things improve for everyone on this matter, afterall after the wedding is over the photos and DVD is all you have.

I think your post would make an excellent letter to Disney Photographic Services! :goodvibes

When we were wrangling with them over our MK photos, all we heard over and over was that they thought our photos were great and they had no idea why we didn't like them. (Click here to see for yourself.) Now I am hearing other brides are told the same thing.

What this says to me is that they are doing nothing to change the way they train their photographers or do business, because they don't think there's a problem.

While it may seem like a high proportion of us on this site have been dissatisfied with Disney's quality, we are a small percentage of people who use their services. And, frankly, they don't have to try to please anyone because, thanks to their new policies on outside photographers, people are forced to use them for any in-park photos.

Wow, I just looked at your pictures from your wedding vs the pictures shot by the Disney photographer and the difference is night and day. Where your photographer captured your beauty and your husband's playfulness, the Disney photographer mainly put the 2 of you in front of very pretty backgrounds and took the picture. Not much posing, very little creativity, and in many cases the flash was too strong. But your wedding pictures were everything I would want in wedding photography, creative, nice blend of black and white and color, and he captured the both of you so well. I can see why you would be disappointed in the bland but expensive Disney pictures!

I thought Ty was supposed to be one of the good photographers?? I requested him now I am nervous.

I know I'm probably going to get a lot of flack for this, but here it goes anyway.

First off I am a Disney bride and like many others we used an outside photographer. I think that these boards can be very helpful and at other times they can make an already nervous bride almost ready for a straight jacket. I like many other brides like to look at people's wedding pics, so much so that this became almost an obsession of mine. I loved looking at how beautiful everyone looked and tried to picture how everything would look for me. Because of all of the time I spent looking at other peoples pics when it came to view mine, I was extremely disappointed. I kept comparing our pictures to other peoples. Which I know is wrong because of the different styles of weddings, body types and looks, but to this day (I was married 2yrs ago) I still have a little trouble looking at them.

Each photographer has their own unique style. They all have certain shots that they like to do for everyone.
I have seen most of the MK pics that have been posted on here and I have to say that they ALL are truly beautiful.
Someone had asked earlier how creative can someone get with the castle.
The castle IS the creative part of the pictures, that's why the majority of the pics are not taken up close. The purpose of this shoot is to capture the beauty of the castle and complete the whole fairytale experience.
I'm sure that some have honestly had a "bad experience" but I honestly believe that there are too many comparisons with outside companies.
Randy, Misty and Roots are amazing photographers and the HAVE to be creative with their shots. The bride & groom are the main focus along with family etc. How boring would people's pictures be if they didn't add any creativity? With the MK photo shoots well that is exactly what it is ...a picture with you in front of the castle.
You honestly CAN'T compare the two.
I know that DPS has been given a bad rep lately. I do agree that their prices are a little steep and they need to be able to offer a bit more. But come on it's Disney for pete sake and we all knew going into the wedding planning that a Disney wedding was NOT going to be cheap, but we all choose to do it anyway, and unfortunatley some people have to complain all the way down the "aisle".
One persons experience cannot speak for others. I think that if everyone STOPS comparing DPS to outside photographers then more people would be happy with their pics. They are 2 completely different photo communities.
I don't think you have to worry about using DPS. If you feel uncomfortable with your photographer then tell someone or choose another one. But don't worry about what your pictures are going to look like if you haven't even talked to the photographer yet....you'll drive yourself crazy!!!
Just remember that everyone is different, no two pictures will come out the same..not even Randy can perform that task!

In the end try and concentrate on the fact the the castle/carousel or where ever are the main focus and you can't get too creative with that!
Yes you pay alot for the session more for the whole experience I think, but even if you can walk away with 4 pics that you like..I my opinion it's worth it.
It's not every day you can be the only one in MK!

I'm sorry if some of you think that your pics are so terrible, like I said before I've pretty much seen them all and they ARE ALL BEAUTIFUL!
Just try and remember that we all have been able to have the wedding of our dreams at one of our favorite places and a few "bad" pics that we have compared to different companies or other bride & grooms, shouldn't put a damper on the overall experience of marrying your true love at the happiest place on earth!

In some points I can see what your saying, but on some, Sorry, I have to disagree ... photographers ARE meant to be creative even with the slightest head tilt or camera tilt. Hell, disney "Enhance" the castle with lights, so even they know that OK it's a castle but at times it needs that little something extra to make it super! And what you said about "its a picture in front of a castle" is NOT right, if it were the case then would you be happy for me to turn up with my digital camera and take your photo? Believe me, if you saw my picture quality you would see my point :lmao:

Many of us arent comparing the disney photos against outside photographers, I am not comparing them to anything at all ... i'm seeing pictures with items or even other people in the shot, and i'm asking myself "is that ok?" No its not. Other disney photographers and outside companies have shown pictures without these "added attractions" so its not impossible to get pictures which are sufficient for every bride to be happy with.

At the end of the day .... Regardless of what company or corporation a photographer works for, they should provide quality pictures if they are entrusted and paid to provide that service. Thats the same whatever industry & world over. A mechanic should fix your car, if you went to Ferrari would you say its ok for them to give you a so so service compared to your local garage because of the super name they have?

If you get a bad meal from a disney chef and it makes you ill, would you be ok with that because he's employed by disney? I could go on with examples but Im sure your all getting my point.

A REAL photographer can take a picture and not have to enhance it with computer programs (that seems to be the excuse disney comes up with regarding some photos - "Your seeing the proofs" they say)

Im hoping along with others that just like the floral situation a few years ago, Disney are already on the case. Surely a company which gets a trend in complaints will look further into it and wont ignore it???

I have had my complaint regarding our photos resolved and they have told me that there is going to be a website with sample on as they know how important the photos are to your wedding. this is in the process of being set up and they have said it should be up and running soon. This should resolve some of the issues

Rumblytummy, I have to agree with you.

I really do feel bad for everyone that didn't like their pictures. It does suck when you aren't in love with your pictures and I truly do feel bad about that. I guess I am just looking at it totally different.

I have Misty doing my wedding pictures and all I care about are those coming out great and I am sure they will because its her company, she sets her standards and style which she has displayed on her website so that is why I feel confident in that area.

With the MK shoot. I have never expected fantastic work. All I am expecting is me and my DH in front of the castle. I have never, even before this site expected much out of that. I think I am doing it more for the experience. That is just me though. I can totally understand wanting beautiful pictures, especially for the price.

Here is my thinking. Maybe Disney is telling the photographers where to shoot and how to shoot. I have seen some wedding pictures with that fisheye lens which is awesome but maybe they use that because you are paying much more for a wedding package and they have different proceedure for those packages. The MK shoot, is a tiny bit cheaper than the wedding packages and maybe it is more of a standard shot, no fancy stuff kind of package so Disney puts restrictions on the photographers, which I am sure they are not happy about because any creative person doesn't want to be told how to do something which might account for them not being happy.

I don't know, just trying to figure out where the problem may be. :confused3

I also think it shows they may be taking the first steps in sorting the common issues out hopefully :thumbsup2

You may well have a point there! I think it may also be a choice made by the photographer from what i'm hearing too. Many peope have mentioned in passing that they had a outside company for their wedding day and it seems some attitudes change almost immediately towards the happy couple!

If it is the case then i'm truely ashamed of Disney even more than I was at the start of this thread. we all know money makes the world go round and any business is out there to make money but to give instructions to restrict a level of service really is a disgusting thing to do if they are!

If it is the case then I am glad I wasnt intending to single out photographers
