We took the Conch Train and have mixed reviews. I thought it was interesting, my DH was less interested, my DD thought it was boring, and my DS(3) fell asleep!
After driving around in what seemed like circles for nearly an hour, we stopped for a break at what turned out to be a gift shop run by the Conch Train tour. I can't say what it was like - we dashed next door to Burger King for some cool drinks. (I realized later that this stop was just up the street from where we started from). We continued for another half hour or so then the tour was over.
Since this was our first visit to Key West, it was a good way to get a feel for the town and learn some of the history and see the sights. The narrative was informative and funny, but got a little old after awhile. There were no other stops (except the break) so if you really wanted to get out and look around or tour the Hemingway house or Southernmost Point, maybe the Trolly would be better. For my family though, the train was just fine!
The advantage of the trolley is that you can get on and off at any given stop. We stayed with our driver because he was really entertaining. It takes a lot to keep DH and three teenagers laughing for an hour, but this guy managed it.
We did the trolley and loved it. Stayed on for the first 8 stops as it was very interesting. Got off at the Southernmost point and then hit the Butterfly Conservatory, then Hemingway's House and then ended up walking up Duval Street.
I think the trolley offers the most felxabiity and by buying the tickets online before we left we saved over both the Disney excursion and buying our tickets as walk-ups.
So you're on the trolley, and when you get off to "sight see", the trolley wait for all, or do you just go back to the trolley stop (like a bus stop?), and wait for the next trolley that comes?
We've booked the Conch tour with Museum package, and if we do the trolley, it might take longer than the estimated amount of time they stated on the brochure, if we get off the trolley, correct?
Haven't decided on the trolley or the train. Leaning more towards the trolley...have 2 DSs (4 & 2)...what do you all think?
aprilgail2...don't mean to "tag along" on your thread, but I was interested in your same exact question!
We did the trolley tour through disney. Maybe we did a different excursion but there were no stops. As we passed an area of interest our driver would say "okay take your pictures" and we would move on quickly, kind of disappointed with the tour.

You pick up the Trolley right near the Key West Aquarium. No more than a 5 minute walk from the Magic. Very easy to get to.
I didn't realize that the one on the Disney excursion doesn't stop. I liked being able to get off near the Southernmost point as that was definately something I wanted to see.
