Yes, once again we're all glued to our television sets looking for answers. Heart breaks for the families--very tragic. It's comforting to know that our friends in the UK grieve with us.
I am absolutely stunned. I watched a launch once and it was one of the most awe inspiring sights that I've ever seen. This is tragic. My thoughts are with all the American People and particularly the families involved. Carolyn
What can be said, other than this is such tragic news for everyone involved. My heart goes out to the families. You just cannot fully understand how they felt when seeing those pictures.
I witnessed the events start to unfold in Dallas, I did not know until later on that Columbia was "gone", to quote a NASA official.
It is comforting to know that we have the support of Britain, France, Germany, the Vatican, etc. in the midst of this tragedy. Even though we can disagree with one another in foreign matters so vehemently, it is a relief to know that when tragedy strikes that friends stand together
I can't say how awful this was - I've just got back after 8 days (4 day DVC cruise) in Florida, going out a day early specifically to see the Shuttle land
Words can't describe the atmosphere as the news broke - we debated about going to see it at the KSC, but decided to watch it from the other side of Port Canaveral outside of our hotel where it would be higher up on the horizon for us to see. By about 9.25 (it was due to land at 9.16) and we still hadn't heard the sonic boom, Simon went inside to see if there was any info which is when he heard that Columbia was currently 'lost', at which point we, along with a number of other people stood round a tv in reception in total silence whilst they told us that whilst at that time it was considered merely lost and out of contact, there was, in real terms, NO WAY it could possible still be in the air at that late time We decided to still go to KSC anyhow, but for different reasons in the end.
I was there especially to see something that I hoped I would remember for the rest of my life - and that's just what I got
What an experience Penny - I can just imagine how sad the atmosphere at KSC was. When I heard of the disaster, I thought of the memorial there for the astronauts who have died and how unhappily there are 7 more names to be added to it......... but how dreadful for those poor relatives waiting the return of the shuttle to be told it wasn't going to arrive.
