Traditions at Thanksgiving

We don't gather for Thanksgiving, but we do have a tradition. My parents cook a turkey (either on the day or near it, if they're traveling) and save about half of it in the freezer. At Christmas, when we're all together, we have turkey curry, which has always been our favorite leftover meal after Thanksgiving.

And neither are we! Do you think it's our Kentucky connection that gives us that in common. My grandfather's family is from Louisville.

My Momma still makes me a little ham . My favorite dessert of all time is Pumpkin Pie Crunch. It has pumpkin pie filling on the bottom with yellow cake mix, pecans and butter on the top. I don't even care for pumpkin normally, but this is my favorite dessert! Now I'm starving, lol.

Waaaay before it was trendy we fried turkeys here in cajun country, and so its still our tradition, along with shrimp and merliton dressing.

My mom's family all gathers at our house (her brother and his family) and we have the traditional turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potato souffle, veggies, and biscuts. We have to have the biscuts because my cousins daughter will eat her turkey on top of the biscuts.

We then watch the Macy's parade. The guys watch football and the gals all sit around the table and look at the ads for Black Friday to see where we want to go shopping.

We don't live near our families, so we host a party for all our friends who also live far from their families. What started out as a handful of (mostly) guys has grown over the years as people got married & has kids -- now we're up to 35 people. Thank heavens for potluck! I make turkey, stuffing & cranberry sauce, and just enjoy the surprises of what everyone else brings.

Our tradition is to have it an entire month and a half early during a Sunday/Monday in early October. That's how we roll.

The Sunday before Thanksgiving, we host a party for all our friends from college. It started with four of us 20 years ago. Now we are about 40. It is about the only time we see each other.

I was born and raised in Plymouth MA - the site of the "First Thanksgiving". Yes, I know people will say that there were other thanksgiving celebrations that preceded ours. Lets just say that Plymouth had the better press agent.

Traditions? Strangely enough mine have changed over the years. Perhaps they can't be called traditions since they are different now.

When I was young the tradition was to watch the local high school football game on Thursday morning against our arch rivals. Then home to a huge turkey dinner. Afternoon taking a nap and watching some TV.

Today? Corresponding with my good internet friends here and on FB. Watching the parades on TV. Heading over to a friends house for late Thanksgiving Dinner while watching one of the NFL games. Then home and hopefully able to stay awake long enough to catch the Patriots game tonight.

For those that are curious - Plymouth does have a few traditions. There was a parade last weekend. There is something called "Pilgrims Progress" which is a procession of re-enactors that walk the route from the waterfront where the original Pilgrims landed up to the church where they gave thanksgiving. There is a big Thanksgiving Dinner at Plimoth Plantation (a recreation of the early Pilgrim village). There will likely also be a protest staged by a group of native americans.

I've been trying to convince my Irish-American family that lasagna should be part of our traditional meals for a couple of years now. I happy to say this thread is strong proof that I'm right!
