The basic black tux has never gone out of style. The variations change in popularity from time to time (shawl collar, cummerbun vs. vest, etc.) but any of those is acceptable just about any time. I wear a two-button, regular collar with a vest and either a wing collar or laydown collar white shirt with a bow tie. Neckties have also become popular with a tux.

The fads that came and went in the 70's were different colors (pastels) and different color shirts with ruffles. Basic black traditional will always work.
