What are the rules for trading/tranferring points between memebers? I am curious, because I would like to get a GV at OKW mid-week 5-days for April or May 2005. However, being a BWV owner, I am not confident I could get it at the 7-month window (any opinions?).

Is trading points between members allowed. In other words, can I trade 100 of my BWV points for somebody's 100 OKW points, allowing us both to book with the 11-month window at the respective resorts?

I know you can rent them from OKW owners, but I don't like not being in control of my reservations. Not that I don't trust people (well, mybe a little), but I'd rather have control and have the reservations in my name (with the ability to change an/or cancel if necessary). Any advice?

I'm a little fuzzy on transferring points so I can't really help....just wanted to say welcome UCONNJack and Go Huskies!! :) :)

Definitely look at the thread referenced above. If you are planning on transferring points to use for a resort other than your home, make sure you are clear to MS about that up front as they will have to do the transaction manually when the time comes. Also realize that with a transfer, most people expect full payment prior to the transfer as they would have no recourse if something happened.

I think the bigger problem with UConnJack's proposed plan is that DVC only allows you to transfer in points OR transfer out points in a single use year (not both). Your plan seems to require both transferring in points and transferring out points. A more workable arrangment might just be to have another DVC member make the ressie for you while you make the ressie for them.

Good luck! :)

To side step the transfer question I would say you should have a good chance of getting a GV at OKW-7 month for May. I would not hold out much hope for April. If you are flexible and it seems you are regarding time to go down, then I would say don't bother with the transfer, just go for it yourself. I am from Connecticut, I don't trust this transfer situation at all, I wonder if being from CT has anything to do with it??

For those that are experts on this; I quoted the following from the 101 post mentioned above.

9. Club Members are expressly prohibited from receiving compensation for engaging in any Transfer activity.

Is this correct? I am reading this to say that you can rent someone points and make a reservation, but you can't pay another member for points transfered? Am I missing something?

Thanks for the help, especially the link to the other thread which was very helpful. It looks like my best shot is to try at the 7-month window for the GV (maybe try for April, but understanding May is the better shot), but to make a 1-br and 2-br reservation at BWV as a backup. We would love to stay in the same room, but we could suck it up if were were close in 2 seperate rooms.

You would think that MS would make tranferring points betwen member's a little easier and flexible. If they allowed a fairly straightforward exchange of the same number of points between two members, I think that would be easy for DVC to track and not affect the balance of points. The tranferer and tranferee (are these even words?) would have likely used those points themselves at their home resort for that use year, so where would be the difficultly in keeping balance (as long as MS setup a way to track it). This would lend so much more flexability to the program and add an alternative to the 11/7 month window. It would be fair since it wouldn't really affect the operation of either resort.

That said, I'm not sure a tranfer would work for me because of the bank/borrow resrictions with it (which I don't think should be restricted either, especially as proposed above). I need to use some of my banked point to do this anyway.

Oh yeah, Go Huskies!

That is accurate though it's not enforced. The difference between renting and transferring is huge from a POS and legal standpoint. This is easily enforceable, IMO.

Dean,

Excuse my ignorance...but why is there such a big difference? Whether you rent or transfer, the same amount of points are used either way. I can't see why DVC would care if I transfered and let another member use the points, or make a reservation for that same member. Either case, the same point usage applies. What am I missing? TIA

I'm not really sure why they'd care other than the hassle of dealing with it. My response was more the enforceability than the reasonableness of making a distinction. It's just like an exchange where it's against the rules to rent it out because you do not own what you're renting. It's still done a lot though.

Technically one owns real estate and the points are simply a representation of that ownership. Once you've transferred the points, the link to an ownership is broken. Come to think of it, I'm even surprised they allow transfers at all, a lot of points systems do not.
