In conjunction with my previous post about non-Disney resorts - I'm wondering, is there any simpler way to exchange timeshares than going thru DVC and using points, etc? Seems like there should be some method that I could get in touch with other timeshare owners and say I'll let you have a week in a studio at a DVC resort in exchange for a week at your timeshare at Myrtle Beach. I know there are all kinds of companies setup to do this, but I'm sure they cost money, etc. Seems like there ought to be just a simple way to do this - taking out all the middle-men.

Most people around here seem to use the TUG2 website for doing exchanges with other timeshare owners. There is a $15 membership fee that is associated with this.
I wish there was a way that we could post here (at the DIS) for trades with other timeshares. We own DVC and 2 weeks in New Orleans (plus II gives us 24 getaway weeks a year). With all those weeks, we are almost always looking to trade a week or two. And, personally, I would rather trade for DVC points than cash anyway.

We just happen to have just such a forum. The DVC Rent/Trade Board was created for just that purpose. As long as the transaction involves a DVC exchange, trades for other timeshares are welcome.

Enjoy!

Doc,

I think the rent portion of the rent/trade board so dominates the postings that finding a trade is cumbersome if not impossible. I for one would visit a "DVC trade only" board daily if it was available as it's own sub-forum.

 There are rarely more than 15 posts per day on the Rent/Trade. It is not a heavily used board as it is now and an additional board is not likely to be added any time soon. If 5- 15 posts is considered "dominating" and "cumbersome" I'm not sure how to create a different environment. The few non-DVC offers often go unanswered, but not because they aren't viewed- more probably due to indifference. A new board is unlikely to change that fact. While there have been numerous offers to trade another timeshare for a DVC stay, there has not been an offer by a DVC member to trade for another timeshare that I can recall.

If the traffic on the Rent/Trade board is high enough, an additional board could possibly be justified, but at current usage levels it's not likely.

Try looking at the Timeshare User Group (TUG) website at www.tug2.net

They have plenty of useful information, including a classified ad section for renting out your timeshare on your own. An annual fee of $15 applies, but I believe the fee includes one ad placement.

I agree that tug is a great website for information concerning timeshares. I just wanted to point out in addition to the classified ad section there is a section for exchanging and last minute rentals.

The $ 15 nominal fee is to have access to all the entire website, which includes rating the various timeshares. If you are non-tug member you can access the classified section at no charge. I believe you must register. As a tug member I don't hesisate to recommend them. Similar to these forums great place to receive very good info. Good luck!!

There is NO simple way to do any timeshare trading outside DVC. DVC II is going to be the next best thing from a simple and easy standpoint. Everything else will get more complicated or risky. Still, the others option are a better choice for many.

I hate to ask a stupid question, but since that has never stopped me in the past :) here goes - what is DVC II? I keep seeing II mentioned but have no clue as to what it is. Thanks.

Interval International, one of the two main exchange companies.

I have to agree! I have had a post on the R/T board for a few days, about trading a non DVC timeshare for DVC points. The post is read, but so far, no replies. I am hoping some are "thinking " about it before they get back to me. As for DVC memebers looking to use their points to trade at a non-DVC place, I will bet that a post like that would get TRAMPLED by people willing to give up their timeshare for DVC points.

I know I would be the first reply! LOL. I mean, it could work out better for both parties, the non DVC owner( in my case I am a DVC owner, but I also have another timeshare) gets the DVC points they want, and the DVC owner can trade out without using as many points as Disney charges.

So, if anyone is interested, I have a post over there offering a Vegas o golf vacation in exchange for DVC points. :jester:

Doc,
I do not know if this is possible, but maybe there can be a simple way that people can sort between a rent or a trade. Maybe an icon can be added to the edge or something like that. I do not have any trouble reading the board, but maybe that would help some people. Just a thought.

I think all the webmasters and monitors do a great job here. Thanks for all the hard work. It sure helps a lot of people.

Good thought!

The individual posting such availability can indicate the nature of the offer in the heading for the thread. That should simplify the process for those reading. The heading could be "Trade wanted for XXX" or some such indication. That should provide enough notice to distinguish a post from a "usual" notice of points to rent or points wanted.

We don't have any easy way to add an icon for an individual board, but the headings allow a post to be categorized without reading the thread.
