I read somewhere that the big thing at Disney for kids is to trade pins. Where is a good place to get some ahead of time at a discount? Also, where do you get the lanyards to put them on? Thanks!

I ordered some pins for our June trip from www.pinseller.com. They have a pretty good selection of Disney pins from about $3.50. There shipping rates are pretty reasonable especially if you buy quite a few pins. They are excellent about communicating your order status and both my orders have arrived in less than 4 days.

Check out ebay also I know some pin lots are going for $2.00 per pin Good luck

Bump. Is it true the the trading pins are a big deal? My DS is 7 and I don't want to waste money buying pins ahead of time if he isn't going to get into the trading.

trading pins are only addictive if you start trading. Most people don't even know about trading pins. If you want some cheap pins go to ebay and look for the seller harval1. I have bought pins from him cheap. we go every year and that is the best part of the trip - trying to find that special pin.

Okay, I know this isn't a super cheap alternative, but I was at the Disney Store today and they had pins there for $4.50 (a couple dollars cheaper than the parks) and no shipping!

I was trying to figure out what to do about a cheap lanyard. People had all different opinions about which are the best, which get heavy... Well I decided to make ours out of embroidery thread. You knot the thread in rows (PM me if you want directions). The thread is on sale at Michaels for 5 for $1 and I am making them pretty wide so the pins fit. When they are finished, I will put a key ring on it so that we can hang something off of it (a fastpass holder etc). They are bright and colorful and I cant wait to give them to my girls! :Pinkbounc

My daughter didn't have a clue about trading pins the first time we went. This last time we bought her pins, and she traded those. I got a bunch at the Disney Store for less than a dollar a piece. WHY DIDN'T I BUY THEM ALL????? I just bought some for our December trip. I bought mine from pinscheap on ebay. I think he is a member here, too. You get duplicates of the pins, but who cares, because you are trading them. And, they are less than $2 a piece.

I know people who use thick camera straps for lanyards. The straps are more comfortable since they are wider and have more padding. (And hold more pins! :rotfl: )

Ooooohhh.. that's a great idea! I bought the pins off of ebay, but I still need 2 lanyards. I never thought of using camera straps. Thanks!

If you live near a Claire's or Hot topic they have cute Disney lanyards that are not expensive.

if you make it to the disney store at the premium outlet mall while visiting wdw, they always have a ton pins at half price. it's fun and addictive, i do it too now. it is something we can do together. my daughter has as much fun finding pins that i'm trying to "collect". i'm trying to get all my favorite villians. right now my daughter is into tinkerbell and sleeping beauty and who knows next trip she could trade all of them when she is "into" something else.
have fun.

I bought my nieces some off of ebay before we went. The 9 year old really got into it. She had 10 pins and she must have traded the set 5 times over. She would stop every CM and trade. She really had fun with it. The 6 year old started trading for tiny pins that she could put on her dolls shirt.

I think its actually better to get duplicates. Makes it easier to trade. We purchased about 50 on E-bay (around $2.90-$3.00 each w/ shipping). I think there are about 30 my kids want to keep.

Pin trading is actually quite fun. My DH, and I used to make a little fun of it, before we had kids the age to trade, but found it quite enjoyable once we started in. DH and I don't trade, but my oldest started trading a few years ago, and both will be trading this time. I've collected a few, and he has too.

I really wish, that I had known ahead of time, to purchase on E-bay, or somewhere else cheaper. At $6.50+++ per pin, it adds up fast.

Another place to look for cheaper pins, is the Outlets. I have seen posts from people who say that works great too.

Have fun

Ours aren't very attractive either. They are official Disny pins, but are mostly Euro Disney, and not characters my kids are apt to want. All are Mickey, but the are pewter or silver. The uglier they are, the easier they are to part with :)

DH and I took a tour and received a pin at the end of the tour. Then, on the same trip we signed up for the Disney Visa at DD and received another free pin. I had no clue about pins..just wore them on my hat. UNTIL....someone stopped us and asked about trading. After explaining the pin trading, THEN I noticed lots of people wearing the lanyards. For our next trip I purchased lots of pins from Ebay for my DGDs and we had a ball trading. I don't collect pins...I TRADE pins. On each trip I try to trade for a specific theme. Still trying to think of a theme for our upcoming trip. I'm leaning towards character pins w/modes of transportation. (Mickey in a car or plane, etc).

I posted this in another thread, but thought it might help you see how fun it can be: :sunny: :goodvibes

my DF got very into it on our last vist. She started with 4 and we ended up buying quite a few and the games began She had 2 lanyards full by the 5th day, and needless to say CM's were talking to us about them. We got fast passes at AK for the Safari because the CM was so impressed with her collection. It was also fun to have children walk up to her and ask to see all her pins (some traded, some didn't). It was a great conversation piece and fun to do. a few of our more "notable" experiences were on the Jungle Cruise @ MK the boat captain made the joke about her sinking the boat with the extra weight. Another was at the gift shop at our resort, the CM had a character we didn't recognize, turned out to be a limited edition pin that only 1000 were made, so we traded for it very quickly. As for what to do with them when your not at the world, we are making a shadow box to display them in our home, and take them with us on our trips. I say go for it, its fun and you never know what good will happen!!

I've started to collect pins so that my boys and I have plenty to trade when we go in October.

I've gotten some really great deals on ebay. I've purchased several from a seller who goes by the ebay name of sellitalltrains. I've been very impressed with this seller. The pins are new, her prices are excellent and her shipping is fair. Plus, there was a mix-up and I didn't get all the pins I was supposed to and she stood behind her promise to make it right!!

I can't wait to do some pin trading in October. This will be the first trip where we've done the pin trading!! :goodvibes
