Trading for Marriott in Myrtle Beach

We are thinking of purchasing the DVC, but had a few questions about using our points at some places on the eastern coast. We vacation to Myrtle Beach a lot and were wondering how difficult it is to get in to the Marriott Grande Dune during the summer months with our points.

Well, I've had a trade request into this property for over a year now, and it hasn't come through yet. With that said I only requested one specific week in June so I have really limited myself. We are trying to coordinate travel plans with Marriott members who actually traded in quite easily. I'm not feeling at all comfortable that my trade will come through.

I have never traded into Myrtlr Beach, but we do visit there often and own some property there. Summer time is peak time, which makes it more difficult to get a trade into Myrtle Beach. I think the Grand Dunes is the nicest timeshare in Myrtle Beach, so it may be even harder then most.

Good Luck.

If you are thinking about summer, June, July and August which is peak time, it will be very difficult. Even Marriott owners trying to exchange in have trouble during the peak summer months. My sister is a Marriott owner and had a request going for about 9 months and finally gave up and decided to go somewhere else. She didn't want to be left within a summer beach vacation. I did receive an exchange using a Marriott BeachPlace week, received it about 13-months out. If a Marriott owner has 2 or more weeks than they can reserve and deposit 13-months out. I felt very lucky to receive my week very early. OceanWatch is a very nice resort, we use to own there. If you wanted to go during off-season then you shouldn't have much trouble getting an exchange.

We had tried for 2 years in a row to try to get in anywhere at Myrtle Beach and we were open for any week between the end of June-end of August and could not get in unless we wanted to go in October. So we bought into Marriott's Ocean Watch. It is a beautiful resort.

That would be a hard reservation to get for the peak summer months. You pretty much would need to be a Marriott owner there for those summer month ressies. Outside resorts would have an even tougher time because other Marriott resorts get a priority within II (Interval) for exchanges to other Marriotts.

If you could go in the shoulder season (like May or September/October) I think you could do it, though.

Has anyone tried to get any other places in Myrtle Beach and been able to during the summer months, such as the Yachtsman? If so, how was the resort?

Thank you for all of your helpful information. We are just trying to make sure we make the right decision before we purchase.

I would be leary of going to the Yachtman right now. Bluegreen bought it (I think just the main/middle tower of the three) last year, and is in the process of updating/renovating. I don't know of anyone who has seen the changes yet. Bluegreen does have Carolina Grande on the Grand Strand at Myrtle, and that building is 1-2 years old. ShoreCrest is on the beach at North Myrtle Beach, and is very nice.

Problem is: many of those places are getting close to full (for the summer) with member reservations!

When I had gone on a wait list for the last 2 years I said I would take anything they had. Everytime I would check they didn't have anything available anywhere until the middle of October. I didn't request a particular resort.

While in MB a few years a go we checked out the Yachtsman, it is not half as nice as DVC resorts. Have you thought about going to HH or VB.

Yes it is a wonderful place. We were there last year on the 4th of July week and loved it so much that we are going back again this year. Last year we rented a side view for $2,100.00. Come to find out that I got a great deal! This year it cost me $2,500.00 for the 4th. So you can always rent the week you want from redweek.com. Plenty of Oceanwatch rentals available for summer time.

Y-ASK

MB will be tough and the Marriott nearly impossible for that time. Still, it doesn't hurt to try, esp if one can wait all the way to a few weeks before the travel time to accept an exchange. We'll be in MB for the first time in a week and a half staying at Carolina Grande and we are Marriott owners as well.
