Tracking Cruising Restart: News and Updates

Apparently both a negative test and proof of vaccination will be required (to cruise and, I'm assuming, to enter the Bahamas) along with a health form you must fill out.
We just booked a backup trip to Atlantis in case our August cruise doesn’t sail and according to them vaccines are not required. Currently need a negative PCR test and a health visa to get into the Bahamas. Of course things are constantly changing so we will see.

It looks like the CLIA thread was locked, so I'm not sure where to post this, but the US Travel Assn backed CLIA's request to the CDC for a new return to sail order. Interestingly, this article quotes a CDC rep as saying: "Returning to passenger cruising is a phased approach to mitigate the risk of spreading COVID-19," Shockey said, adding that the details for the next phase of the conditional sailing order "are currently under interagency review."

They didn't back off the Nov. 1 date, but maybe an updated order in the not too distant future?

Miami/Dade County Mayor Daniella Cava tweeted tonight about a conversation today with officials from the CDC.

STATEMENT BY MAYOR DANIELLA ON HER MEETING WITH THE CDC TO DISCUSS SAFE RETURN OF CRUISING

We were very encouraged by our call today with CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky, Division Director Dr. Martin Cetron, and the CDC team to discuss the safe return of cruising in the U.S. I was impressed by the Director's knowledge of the industry and her empathy to the economic hardships that the loss of this business has caused. We are excited that the CDC will shortly be issuing new guidelines for a restart to cruising, taking into consideration the advancements made possible by the vaccine, and we are eager to work with the CDC and cruise industry as a positive partner and a resource. Some may want to sue, but we want to sail, and we are ready to collaborate to make sure the Cruise Capital of the World can lead the way to rebuild this critical industry.

Shows that the CDC wants to engage directly with the US institutions - such as the ports - and not necessarily with someone like CLIA representing foreign cruise lines.

This may very well be our ticket to the high seas.

Such a reveal:

It could be an indication that the cruise lines may have taken an antagonistic attitude with the CDC, which may be proving to be counterproductive to their stated end goal.

New guidelines doesn’t necessarily mean better ones or that the CDC is actually interested in restarting cruises. When the no sail order expired everyone was excited. When the new guidelines came out, everyone was hopeful. Yet, despite having guidelines in place for months and months, the CDC had made no moves to allow test cruises or move from step one of plan to step two.

Gives us hope...but cautiously so. Hopefully they realize how many businesses and workers they are hurting by not providing the cruise industry a pathway to resuming operations.

100 million Americans vaccinated, CDC clears the vaccinated for travel, FL Governor and Mayors pushing for a return to cruising.. looks like we are turning the corner.

Actually, you do realize that the CLIA represents cruise lines in every part of the world, not just "foreign" cruise lines, of which virtually EVERY single cruise line that uses Port Miami, Port Everglades, Port Canaveral, and Tampa port are ALL foreign flagged cruise lines! The CLIA is a consortium of cruise lines in all segments of the industry in all parts of the world INCLUDING the United States. The pressure the CLIA is putting on the CDC is to get them to start some kind of process ANY KIND OF PROCESS in resumption of cruises out of US ports. The announcement today from the CDC that fully vaccinated people can travel with "low" risk is the first step in the agency re-evaluating the CSO which they have stated is in effect until Nov 1 of this year. With the announcements this could very well signal a change in their position concerning the CSO, maybe a blanket lifting of it, or a modified version. But they know they need to do something, simply because there is NO valid reason to keep cruises from resuming with the safety factor of the current vaccination provides. Cruises are the ONLY segment of the travel/leisure industry that has been completely shut down since last year, and it is going look really bad if they keep the ban in place all the way into fall when even the CDC says traveling is safe for fully vaccinated people.

The CDC already has a process in place - the CSO - to get the cruise industry back up. CLIA's cruise lines - more than 90% of which are foreign-domiciled - have shown little progress in the last 5 months towards it. They simply want it lifted.

The ports, on the other hand, are a part of the US transportation infrastructure. Their financial well-being and solvency are important, including indirectly to the CDC. (The CSO directly affects their operations.) So, it makes sense for the ports to handle this if the CLIA's own procrastination is not moving the needle!

Seems what the CDC put out yesterday was a big old nothing-burger that gets us no closer to cruises restarting...at least according to the Port Canaveral CEO.

CDC had been coming under pressure lately. So I guess they wanted to make it look like they were doing something. But by all accounts, yesterday was just more stalling under the illusion they are moving things forward.

He can either whine about it and still be doing this a year from today - or get off his back and start making some progress towards the CSO. It's not the CDC that's bleeding money here.

Or, maybe they all think following the CSO legitimizes it, and maybe when they start seeing cruises sailing out of the Caribbean ports, they will want to snap out of it.
