I am trying to find a "boy" toy for my son's preschool gift exchange in the $3-5 range. Most of the kids are 4, turning 5 this year. Would you give a toy that is labeled 6+?

Depends on the game, and why it's 6+. I would probably give the game...they'll be 6 before you know it! If you think it's a game your son would be able to play & understand, then go for it. I buy clothes a little big for them to grow into...why not a game they can grow into? :)

Depends. Some things are 6 and up because most don't have the fine motor skills to handle until 6 to do. Some things are 6 and up because it's for a safety reason. And some are labeled an age because of maturity. So if you think the child getting the toy can handle it for safety, maturity and fine motor skills at that age, then it would be okay.

I can tell you my mother in law sent my son all 6 and up toys for his 5th birthday. Most went in the closet since he couldn't do them due to the fine motor skills. The rest he isn't interested in because they are just over his head. Personally, I like to stick with the child's age unless I know for sure that they can handle something above their age range.

I was thinking of Guess Who, Twister, Connect 4, Trouble (this one is age 5), or Operation.

Connect 4 is for 6+ (my son gave it to a friend this weekend for his 6th birthday). Not sure if kids that age can handle Twister and my son is freaked out by the noise of Operation. Trouble would be a good one. I know they have a Star Wars one that my son plays with every time he sees it in the store.

I'd opt for something more along the lines of playdoh or some kind of art supplies. Personally, I stay away from games because you don't know what they already have in the house. Playdoh and art supplies always need to be replenished.

yes, I always buy above the age range. I find the age ranges to be under what they really should be, or at least with my kids. I'd rather have something they can use for longer than just a month or two.

I would probably do a book (parents will love it) or maybe Uno.

Or how about something like one of those huge bouncy balls for outdoor play?

Hi Ho Cherry-O, Chutes and Ladders, Candy Land. MOst of which are really cheap and with a rebate at TRU can be under $5.

I would go with a preschool game if you choose a game. Other ideas: the 5 pack of match-box cars, puzzles, books, nerf ball or set, any small truck or car or tractor set.
