Towns in New Hampshire to Move To??

I have no idea what people mean "there is lots to do in Keene". Like what?! No it's a serious question--I'm always looking for things to do!

I think people visiting might consider it a quaint New England town but it loses its quaintness due to the high property taxes! There are no real shopping areas other than Walmart, Target, JCP.

There are no highways west to east so it takes forever to get to the bigger cities like Concord, Manchester or Nashua and especially the sea coast.

Closest airport is Manchester (about 1 1/2 hrs away) or Hartford, CT (about 1 1/2hrs away).

The medical system is limited to one monopoly (Dartmouth Hitchcock Clinic) and there is no urgent care facility. So if you come here to visit and get an ear infection, the only option is the ER.

I think it's a nice place to raise a family but i would not tell a single person or a young couple to move out here. There just really is not a lot available for that demographic.

My recommendation is the Amherst area. Great location to shopping, medical facilities, airports, bigger cities and many more things to do.

Not dizluvah, but I would say go to Rochester. It's probably about the same distance as Portsmouth, but the traffic between Portsmouth and Dover can get bad depending on the time of the day.

As for the OP's question. I'm in the Mount Washington Valley, which is lovely but probably too far from civilization. I have family in Raymond though. It's close to Manchester/Concord, and also close to the Seacoast. There's lots of new development in that area.

My Aunt and Uncle live in Hooksett, which is close to everything but (to me) still pretty remote. My cousins grew up in Bow- which, again- close to cities but still fairly rural.

I am in Hooksett, right in the middle for everything, between Concord and Manchester... Boston is an hour drive, the beach about 45 min, the mountains an hour. Three hour plane ride to Disney!!:wizard:

If cell service & home internet speeds are important to you, keep that in mind for some towns, or even parts of towns. My relatives in Raymond need to walk to the end of the driveway to use their cell phones. ;)

Keep in mind about river flooding, long power outages, how soon is service restored in certain areas. And how do you feel about nuclear reactors? Just parts of life in parts of NH. And if you are running a business from home, some of those could impact your business & down time.

Love Londonderry. Boston is about 45 mins south, the ocean is about the same. The lakes region is a little over an hour away. There are a lot of apple orchards and pick your own farms around. The schools are wonderful. My son is involved in the music program and it is one of the best in the state.

My DF are currently living in New Hampshire, but we need to be out of the place we are renting for next year. We think we want to stay within NH but have absolutely no idea where to look. We'd like a town that's nice to walk around, safe, but still within an area that we could drive to larger stores if needed. Right now we live in a VERY small area and have to drive about 30 min. just for the nearest supermarket.

I know NH isn't the most popular state...but absolutely any advice would be helpful? :goodvibes

I like the Hanover/Lebanon area. If we wanted to stick around NH we would move there. We currently live west of the Loon Mtn area and I work in Littleton and DH works in Lebanon. If you are thinking about having kids *seriously* consider the school district. We are trying to get out before my daughter gets to kindergarten. Also, good school district means better resale in the future.... Lebanon has some great things (love the farms, co op etc) Also I enjoy going to Burlington VT, it's an easy drive down 91/95 to MA, CT & NJ.... Also look into property tax rates and their increases - mine have doubled since moving up here 6 years ago some towns have done much better than ours.

Mack's Apples, right? I was born and raised in NH until I was 10. I remember going to Mack's Apples as a little girl. (we lived in Manchester, and from what I understand, you don't want to live there anymore. Sad, because it wasn't bad in the 70's. )

Does anyone know much about the Nashua area?

In looking at all the other cities, this one seems to have a lot of the amenities near it even though the downtown area seems smaller.

I live in Nashua and while I love it, it definitely does not have a small town feel to it. More of a small city.

There's lots to do with plenty of shopping/entertainment, a hour from Boston, an hour from the beach and an hour from the mountains. Crime rate is low and we have a good school system.

I love the Portsmouth area (probably because I went to UNH), but if you want to be closer to the mountains the North Conway and Lincoln areas of NH are beautiful.

Good luck!

I'd look into the Lakes Region, especially Meredith. It's a beautiful small town with lots of little shops, and the schools are great. It's just a short drive to 93, and close to Laconia/Gilford where there are more shopping options. It's also not too far from skiing.

I agree!

I grew up in Nashua in the 50s and 60s (yes, I'm old as dirt) and it is much different than when I was there. Many of my relatives are still there and happy, but I wouldn't go back. Too many changes.

For raising a family I would choose the Portsmouth area. Not far from lots of activities but a little smaller than other places. And, as an earlier writer said, DH and I went to UNH.

When we retired we moved to Madison, just outside Conway Village. It is nice if you like small communities but a fair drive on secondary roads to get to many places.

Tomorrow the moving van comes and we are moving to FL. It will be different.
