Is this another park where we need to stay for 7 nights to get at least some of the Magic? Is this place just as big as Disney World? What about the cost of a package? Nice hotel room with access to the park would be nice. No need to throw in any meal plans. Ticket costs? There will be seven in our family and the seventh will be about a month shy of a year old. We're going to a wedding in California in November of next year and while we're out there I was thinking maybe we can do Disneyland.

You really don't need more than 4-5 days to do both parks and Downtown Disney and thats kind of generous. Disneyland is smaller than Magic Kingdom and California Adventure is even smaller, but both are incredibly fun and entertaining. There are only 3 hotels for the parks, with California Grand Hotel having its own entrance to California Adventures. Most of the Good Neighbor Hotels are a 5-10 minute walk to the gates. The two parks are a hop, skip and a jump from each other, no shuttles or busses needed.

I just came back from my first trip to WDW and was amazed at the size of it all since I am so use to DL and CA. I was there 7 days and felt like I needed more, maybe another trip one day. I personally like DL's Fantasyland a lot more, the rides and its setup.

By the way I remember your "I was just shown the bill" post, it was great!

Disneyland is very much different than WDW. Geographically, the Disney Resort is much smaller. It's very easy to see everything entirely on foot. There isn't anything like the Epcot World Showcase, nothing like Animal Kingdom, no waterparks (although there are non-Disney waterparks in the LA area), no Disney golf courses, no Disney lakes, etc. Disneyland is pretty similar to the Magic Kingdom in many ways, but Disneyland is much more compact. It has more attractions, but covers considerably less land. The 3 Disney hotels are smaller than most of the WDW resorts. DTD also much smaller and is adjacent to the parks. A stay at the Disneyland resort can be done in about 1/2 the time as WDW or even less. In November, unless you are there during Thanksgiving, you will probably be happy with around 4 days. You definitely do not need 7 days, but if you have extra time, there are many ways to enjoy them.

To get an idea of how much it will cost, I recommend that you go to the Disneyland.com website and price some packages. You may be able to beat these costs, but it gives you a pretty good idea of what to budget, and the variation in costs between staying on or off site. You'll find the room rates are much less during the off-season.

Unlike WDW, the benefits of staying on-site are not that significant. There are hotels and inns directly across the street that are as close or closer than 2 out of 3 of the Disney resorts, and they are significantly cheaper. For large groups, you might prefer one of the suite hotels. There are also some nice places a mile or two away with shuttles every 1/2 hour. The "ART" shuttles get mixed reviews, put should be OK if you are going during a slow period. Still, the Disney properties are wonderful, especially the Grand Californian. Where you stay depends a lot on your own priorities and budget.

By the way, Christmas decorations start going up around the second week of November, and the weather is generally pretty mild. It's a lovely time to visit.

Disneyland is not WDW. It is the original and is much smaller, but that has been covered already here. The beauty of DL is that the weather is fantastic (and the fall even more so) and the parks are so detailed.

While it is true that there are off-site hotels as close to the parks as the Disney resorts I would recommend you stay on site. You pay more to get less in DL as far as the resorts go, but with a big family and some very young little ones (right? I was just on the WDW thread- don't you have a baby on the way this fall?) the Grand Californian is worth the $. It will be easy to pop back up to your room if you need to.

One thing that is really great about DL is that you never need to try to take a stroller on a bus :)

Boy did you ever get bit by the Disney bug, :rotfl:

I have been bitten very bad! Thank you for all of your replies. I figured since we'll all be out that way, WHY NOT! LOL! My children will be teenagers before I know it so I want to take them places that THEY will enjoy before that time comes. Yes, the baby is on the way and that's a good thing! We will have years of WDW and DL even if only are able to vacation with the youngest. :goodvibes

I was thinking more along the lines of a three night at DL. I haven't done any quotes for it yet but I'm guessing it is a lot cheaper than seven nights at WDW. My best friend is getting married around Thanksgiving in LA and I'll be with her for a week and after, I figured my family can visit DL.

Be sure to check out the 4th night free special for on-site hotels (you will need to also purchase park tickets) at disneyland.com, and you can also get 4th night free if they have your nights available at expedia.com (no ticket purchase required).

Hi Cadence!

I have responded many times to your WDW thread but I will tell you that planning a DL vacation is MUCH easier. Maybe Mark wouldn't have been in so much shock had you started planning your west coast trip first. ;)

All parks and resorts are within walking distance so you may not have the transportation headaches like you have been dealing with while planning your WDW vacation.
