Total income from tips -anyone done the math?

our server told us disney was the only one that let's them stay with their wives that work on the ship also. that is the reason they chose disney, they do get some time off when they are docked, also the more compliments on the surveys gets them time off also, so fill out the survey cards

Amen, Helen!! I love your attitude!!
I think they have to be cautious because you never know when a person might take something the wrong way and get them in trouble for being too "familiar." It drives me crazy when I see some people acting like the crew was put on this earth just to serve them. Granted, their job is a service job, but that doesn't mean you can't treat them with respect. I just remember: There but for the grace of God go I. I was fortunate enough in the Great Cosmic Lotto to be born in America into comfortable circumstances. That doesn't make me any better than a person born in a country with rampant poverty who didn't have the same educational or job opportunities.
Over the course of 21 Disney cruises, we've gotten to know several of the crew members and have been able to chat with them on a more information basis. They are a great bunch...I can't say enough about them. I know that they really do work long hours that would make most Americans go wild from lack of sleep (not to mention lack of overtime pay). They all do speak very highly of Disney, particularly those who have come from other cruise lines. I think that being treated well by their employer is one of the reasons that they have such good attitudes. Personally, I thrive on diversity and love meeting people from other countries and cultures. That's one of the reasons that I love cruising...it's always a mini-trip around the world.

It would be a real shame if it were true on the ship like it is in the US in many places, that the employees are expected to pool thier tips. What would be the good of tipping extra for exceptional service if it never goes to just them? Is that why I hear of some of you passing out more persona l things like phone cards, and some one had mentioed Bath & Body Works products? What a shame. A good comment card isn't enough praise.

I'll admit to taking a rather cynical attitude when I first read the DCL brochure. In describing the Rotation Dining, it described how you get the same servers all week long... that they rotate restaurants with you. My response was... "great... that way you feel even guiltier if you stiff them on the tip." But as I discovered the DIS boards and the other great resources out there (Barb's site and Entropy's Magical Disney Cruise Guide), I learned that most people really enjoy their servers and enjoy having them rotate with you. And I learned that this is true. They are almost like friends. I say "almost" because it's definitely not a friendship of equals... they are ever aware that you hold the future of their DCL careers in your Guest Comment Card... but they are warm, friendly, and you are happy to learn about who they are and where they come from. And yes, they do work hard.

AMEN BARB... BTW that should also apply to the US. You would be surprised at the same treatment here.
