ToT Question

For all of you Tower of Terror fans, I have a question. I have ridden this ride once and only once, when it first opened. I don't really care for the drops very much. However, I am going this time with a first timer and he made me promise to ride this with him. It's one of the rides he's so excited about. I know I'll survive. It doesn't make me sick or anything, i just don't like it.

So here's the question - is there a specific place that I should sit that would make the drops less "droppy" (for lack of a better word)???

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Nope...the only place to sit that is less droppy is the bench after you take the chicken exit.

Since you've ridden it, the ride has gone through a number of revisions. The latest - the "random" drop pattern is easier on people who don't like the drop since it spends almost as much time going up as down.

not really. sorry! what I do is hold onto the rails next to my seat and basically pull myself down into the seat. I don't get AS much air time.

When you rode it last they probably still had lap bars...now there are seatbelts...so you're a bit more secure in your seat.

enjoy ;)

It was definately a lap bar when I rode. I remember that. So do I understand correctly now there are seatbelts and rails on each side of your seat??? That might make me feel a little better. I'll ride everything else in the "world" without any issues. I just really don't like this one.

Yep, it's all seat belts now. Although there is no "less droppy" seat, my advice is sit in a seat that is at the end of the row so you can hold onto the car, rather than a loved one who is also dropping. It might make you feel better. :bounce:

In my experience, I felt the front row was a lot more intense than sitting in the back of the car, so you may want to try that.

Also, there are definitely seat belts, but between each seat is also what I refer to as "Oh, #*@!" handles that you can grab onto so you don't come out of your seat as much! :teeth:

Yep! those are the rails I'm talking about! Kinda sucks though when the person next to you has the same idea! hehehe

I remember back when they had lap bars, I would hold onto that thing for dear life! One time there was a...umm..pooh sized gentleman sitting next to him. The lap bar stopped at his lap...but left a GOOD 6" between my lap and the bar.

I was airborne the whole time.

Being Pooh sized myself you would be surprised to hear that I was asked to ride with someone for that very reason. Normally though I would try to get the top center (old seat belt row) because it gave me more air time and because of no seat in front of you your legs would sometimes flip up during the drops. When the went to all seat belts they lost that seat. I miss it every time I ride.

One time my sister and I rode and she was sitting next to a similar size man. My sister took one look at him and when lowering the bar said, "suck it in". We got the best laugh, especially that man's wife. :teeth:

My strategy now is to make the seatbelt as loose as possible for lots of air time. One time this last Saturday it was a little too loose, though, and I had such airtime that I had a hard landing smack on my rear end. :hyper: Serves me right!

Thanks everyone for letting me know your tips. I'm getting a chuckle from what everyone has to say and it's easing my nerves. Of course, I think I'm also at ease b/c I'm still 9 days away and 1200 miles.

I get VERY antsy on this ride...I've done it so many times...but it still 'gets' me.

as soon as the elevator starts moving forward, I feel like I'm going to vomit.

but it's over SO fast...I just scream my head off the whole time...I once used some "un-disney" language...but I did get right back on.

When my DD was about 12 we were sitting together on TOT and the man next to us in the row was Pooh sized. I told my DD not to pull the lap bar down too far in case she squashed the man. Next second he suddenly rammed the bar down so hard that it pinned my DD and myself inoto the seat - and it must have almost cut him in half. He was obviously VERY nervous about riding! We still laugh about it 4 years later.

I have a terrible fear of heights, but somehow I always find myself riding ToT over and over again. One tip that I read about on these boards has helped a great deal: place a penny on the floor beside you. When you start to drop, watch the penny. It hovers over the floor during the drops, then slams against it on the way up, then starts hovering again. I find that seeing what happens to it distracts my mind from the fact that I'M FREE-FALLING FROM A THOUSAND FEET IN THE AIR.

Okay, I'm perfectly aware that 13 stories is not a thousand feet, but I REALLY don't like heights.

being a "pixie sized" person i am sooooooooooooooo happy that the lapbar has been replaced. my dad is pooh-sized and i basically had nothing to protect me. i love the drops and thought it was so much fun flying out of the car. it was part of the fun of the ride. i sat in between my dad and brother and when most people had their arms in the air they were pushing me back into my seat....lol! we now can ride hands up and free thanx to the seatbelts! but i agree that the front row is a lil easier on the tummy.

Has anyone told you about the new twist to the ride?

When the elevator is stopped at the top the whole thing pivots backwards and you plummet down the shaft head first....err...while spinning....and then they drench you with freezing water while blasting you with cold air.

Ha Ha! I bet there are some thrill seekers out there that would love ToT if it did that. I'm not one of them.

Now Now, wdwoldtimer......the point of this is to make me less nervous about this ride - not too chicken out right before. Although, I might feel better if I was upside down. Upside Down coasters are a walk in the park for me.

Shhhhh, now the secret is out!

We were going to try the penny experiment once, but the CM saw the penny and told us to put it away because if it fell then the ride would sense something out of place and would shut down.

When the doors first close and the first scene appears, look for the hidden Mickey in the scrollwork design above where the ghost people are standing. It's the same scene that turns to "stars" before ending.

You want to know the scariest part of the ride? At the end, just before you exit, there are old Twilight Zone relics next to the elevator. There's a ventriloquist dummy sitting there. I hate those things, they've always given me the creeps. I swear its eyes move.

Oh I've heard that you're not supposed to do the penny trick as well. I suggest you smuggle in a Toluca turkey leg and let that baby fly up and smack into the top of the elevator..it works just as good as the coinage and won't hose up the mechanism.

I agree that maybe you should sit on the end where you can hang on for dear life. I was in a row of 4 snuggled next to my 5 yr old and I had him with one hand and my seatbelt with the other. There was nothing else to hang onto. I was quite shocked when we got on to see that it was just seatbelts, last time it was the bar. Hope you enjoy it!
