Hi everyone!

A few friends and I are planning to go down to New York for a very quick, 2 days trip to see the city as well as Beauty and the Beast before summer work starts (I'm in University). That was until I checked the prices for the Greyhound tickets, turns out to be around $210 for both ways! That sets our plans way back to the point where we won't be able to go! :sad2:

Both my friends' and my parents aren't too keen on driving down to the Big Apples because it's a long drive.

Does anyone know of any other alternative that would be cheaper than Greyhound? We will be going at the end of April. Any help would be appreciated!

Your best bet is to do one of two things:

a) Continental Airlines has weekend getaways at very low prices (about $99US roundtrip)...not every weekend but these are announced every Wed and they are good for travel outbound Sat with return the following Mon/Tues...Toronto is a city that frequently pops up on the web site (www.continental.com) offering these sale fares out of Newark (EWR) - I hope they work in reverse for you (Toronto starting point)

b) next best bet - Buffalo-Newark roundtrips are quite low if booked in advance and over a weeken ....thaough not as low as in a) probably $150 roundtrip I'm guessing.

Good luck - MORE Canadians should visit NYC!!! The world's greatest city!
(forgive my bias)

We just booked for May 2-7 with Jetblue out of Buffalo it was $39 each way!
Booked Mary Poppins tickets and just have to take care of the hotel which we'll likely do using Priceline but not yet, too soon:rolleyes1

You don't want to be driving in NYC trust me and with the cost of gas, well there would be no deal! Have fun!

You'll have a ball...1 more day would be better still...;)

If you don't have airmiles or aeroplan miles to use for airfare, then definately drive to Buffalo and use any of the airlines that fly into NYC!

Even using airmiles, It cost me $220! for the taxes!:confused3

If you find a hotel that is centrally located, you won't need a car! Walking and cabbing is the only way to go!

If you are looking for a great way to see NYC, book the Greylines Hop Off and On bus tour!

Don't forget to check out the Disney Store! It's huge!

Hope you make it! NYC is a fabulous city!

You can try Amtrak (they go from canada's viarail) we did this before we left Toronto at 9am got into NYC at 11pm you can call and check the prices

We drove to NY a couple years ago, going was a nightmare took us 11 hours but coming home 7 hours to the border! Better to fly, you don't drive around NYC, I parked my car and that was it didn't see it until we left! Try flying out of Buffalo, it will be cheaper and even parking over in Buffalo is cheap; for 10 days we paid $60 US. (sunpark across from the airport) Good luck, I'd love to go back one day soon!

Hotels are a different story as far as finding the deals tho...ugh

Ugh, I do NOT recomend AMTRAK. Took it to NYC in February and it was horrible. Our train (both ways) were delayed by 5 hours. We didn't get into NYC until 1 am and we didn't get back to Toronto until 12:30 am.

I would actually recommend that you drive to NYC. It'll be shorter than a train ride and probably shorter than the bus ride. If you're not keen on driving into the city...pick a place outside of NY and take a commuter train in...

The hotel we stayed in...near Times Square, actually had free parking (amazing!!) Next year, we may drive instead of flying.

And...we saw Mary Poppins in Feb...it was great!

Well 8 1/2yrs ago when I went in the winter I to also had a problem with Amtrak BUT I have since travelled 2 more times non winter spring and fall and didnt have any problems. I guess winter months theres more chance or a problem due to it is tracks they use and anything can happen.

I have also flown into New Jersey and took a bus into NYC then on to CT and no problems that way either just depends on what you prefer BUT with a bus you cannot walk around to stretch your legs only when bus stops (as I have also taken a bus to NYC) as my husband use to live in the US so traveled various ways there with and without kids) but again bus is long and not much space to move

I would suggest going to the bus station and checking the prices for both Greyhound Canada and Greyhound USA ( I believe one operates as Trentway-Wager in Canada) and confirm if the Companion Fare is available. I recall that whenever we'd check the website the Companion Fare was alwasy unavailable yet that wasn't true in person as we bought our tickets. We always took Greyhound USA - it was cheaper.

It's been 5 years since I've taken a bus to Manhattan - if you do not want to drive or fly it is the best way. I've heard over and over that the train is horrible and it's long. One of the benefits of taking the bus is you can leave at night and wake up in New York - no time wasted during the day or money spent on a hotel for that night and the same can be done on the way back!

My DH and I are flying to New York next week for $117US each, taxes included. This is from Buffalo using JetBlue.
