My youngest brother is getting married in June so my husband and I are travelling to Toronto to attend.

My husband is an amputee and spends most of his time in a wheelchair but also has his prosthetic leg.

I had an accessible room booked back in November. My brother contacted them in January just to make sure we were in the proper room and he was assured we had already been assigned to the accessible room and that it was newly renovated and the shower was roll in.

I had to contact them a week ago to add a day to our reservation. I mentioned we were already in an accessible room and was told no, they don’t have accessible rooms. WHAT?!? How could two people give 100% opposite answers? I could understand if a detail was off, like checkout time, but someone invented a whole new room.

I cancelled that reservation and found another hotel. I made the reservation and requested an accessible room. I got an email earlier today saying that I had to make the request through Expedia (who we booked with) and to change the room type to standard. So, chatted with Expedia and they searched and said the hotel didn’t have any accessible rooms available for our dates. Why didn’t the person who replied to my email say that?? They knew the dates because my reservation was attached to the request. I was so beyond frustrated! I am still a bit, that’s why this turned into a vent/request lol

All this to say…does anyone have any suggestions on hotels that you know have accessible rooms? I’ll do the legwork to see if the room is available, I just need some good leads. It’s impossible to search on Google because I just kept not getting the results I wanted and there’s also like 80000 hotels in Toronto.

I’d like to stay under $300 a night but could go up a bit if needed. Usually I’d never spend that much on a room but we’re treating this trip as our honeymoon we didn’t take at the time.

Thank you for any suggestions!

** I should say the first hotel was Tower Inn Suites and the second was The Chelsea hotel

What area is it in ? I would avoid third party sites even tho cheaper as a log of time their listings aren’t accurate. I worked in a hotel and ppl would always get mad at things they read on Expedia that we didn’t actually have ..
I would call Marriott and explain the situation . Or email a few bigger brands direct ..
HTH a little

I agree, if it is possible, try to stick with the big chain hotels in downtown Toronto, such as Marriott, Westin, Fairmont, Hilton, Sheraton, Radisson. Those are a few that come to mind. I would try to email those specific locations directly before booking.

You sure it was Tower Inn Suites or was it Town Inn Suites? I would email them for confirmation and not trust the desk clerk. Photos look like it might be a roll-in shower.

I would avoid 3rd party sites as well. Go on the marriot site and see if there is anything that looks suitable. Then call the hotel directly to book and explain your situation

I knew I was forgetting aomething. I want to stay in the downtown area because it’s central to everything we’ll be doing.

Good advice to stick with the major chains

I don’t know why I have it stuck in my head that it’s Tower Inn Suites..it’s town inn suites.

Good idea. Maybe talking to someone in person will get me some better results.

Just a little heads up a few of the big downtown hotels accept emergency housing that is paid for by the city. There are often issues with these guests. So before you book you might want to ask about this. Aside from that there are lots of nice, modern places in the city core....the Marriott at the dome, the Soho are the first that come to mind. The Sheraton across from city hall is nice with lots of amenities. There is a pretty good chance that you will have to pay more than $300 a night on a weekend.

Also, be aware of the Ontario Staycation tax credit for 2022....so save your receipts.

In regards to the emergency housing - as far as I am aware, any downtown hotel that is contracted for emergency shelter - there are quite a few at the moment - is used exclusively for that, and does/will not have rooms available for outside guests. (There are a handful in the outskirts, mainly near the airport, that have an arrangement with the City to provide rooms on an as-needed basis, but traditionally that was for refugees or occasionally if someone in City housing was displaced for something like a fire).

As for the accessible rooms - I have been working closely with hotels over the past couple of years, and I was surprised to learn just how few truly compliant rooms they have, but moreso the confusion over how many and where they are in the building. My theory is this is reflective of older (ie historic) buildings with rooms designed under outdated rules. I mean, any newer Comfort Inn on the highway will have a website showing exactly how many accessible rooms they have, and even have pics, and you can book those specifically.

In the case of a downtown Toronto hotel, however, I would echo exactly what several posters have suggested - call the hotel directly, speak to an actual person at the front desk, and make sure they know what is needed and if it is available - and if they can guarantee it.
