Tornado jitters.

If you don't have one, pick up a NOAA weather radio. You can get them for around $20 at Walmart, Homeland, Radio Shak, just to name a few places. It makes me feel much more secure living in Tornado Alley. We keep it in our bedroom so it will alert us to storms while we're sleeping, but it's loud and we can hear it all over the house. I find it much more accurate and up to the minute for my area than The Weather Channel.

We had a small tornado touch down about 15 miles from us Friday night. They're scary! :scared1:

That's a good idea.

I feel for all of you having the bad weather this season. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.

We had a tornado come through our town last summer. Hit our house. Luckily we had only minor damage. But many houses in our neighborhood had heavy damage and 2 were leveled. It was a very scary experience and has made us extra vigilant this year. Every time the wind blows hard or there is a thunderstorm, my kids, my DH and I are scared.

My best advice to everyone out there is be as prepared as possible. Get a weather radio (our sirens didn't go off last year so TV and radio were a life saver) have lots of batteries and bottled water on hand, keep flashlights and a battery operated radio in your basement, closet or safe room - but most of all... when there is a warning for your area don't stop to take pictures or see it outside. GEt to shelter IMMEDIATELY. Many of our widows just shattered and walls/roof sucked out or up. A grill and patio furniture were found in our neighbor's living room right where they were sitting just moments ago. It is very scary.

See, I don't get this laughing, downplaying of what nature could do. And you know, you need to teach kids what to do, it isn't something that should just be a devil may care attitude.

I don't get it either. I had people tell me I'm too paranoid but two weeks ago when a tornado touched down in our community and passed right in front of our house I was prepared while everyone else was claiming "it came out of nowhere."

Good Evening Everyone! I am in West Tn and it has been very stormy here tonight (last night too). We have been in and out of the closet all night. There is still quite a bit coming my way. Needless to say, I won't be getting much sleep tonight.

Be safe everyone and make sure you have your weather radio on.

:thumbsup2

I grew up in the Midwest and have been through many tornado warnings. I've seen what a tornado can do first hand. OP, there is nothing wrong with being nervous over the possibility if that keeps you alert to the possibility of severe weather. Being prepared makes all the difference.

One of the hardest parts for me, of living in Florida, is not having a basement. People always make comments about how Florida only has small tornadoes. They are still TORNADOES! I miss the security of having a basement to go to during severe weather. Somehow, the closet just doesn't feel all that secure!

I know we actually cancel I first baseball ever because of storms couple weeks ago at my job. We never cancel because of rain. I glad they did. Thank God we do not have give Wednesday. We get 10 inches of rain we done for. Our yards can't handle that must more rain anymore.

I am not liking the weather either. Everyone stay safe and pray the mountains break up like they usually do.

The weather has been crazy! Yesterday and Sunday the tornado sirens were blaring. First time I've ever heard them, and I've been living here for years.

I was at Keeneland when that storm started - YIKES!!! :scared1:

Wow! I bet that was scary!

libertybelle, I couldn't download My Radar on the ipad for some reason and it shows nothing on the iPhone to indicate an alarm will sound, DH says it shuts off after 2 minutes so I'm not sure how it will work. am I missing something or will it work?

I hope DH told me the right name (was it $4.99?).Ok. I just got my phone and it wasy Weather Alert USA, not my radar! Ack! I hope you didn't have to pay for My Radar. I'm so sorry!

I just downloaded it to my iphone and I don't see an alarm either. I'm nervous about tomorrow and we don't have a weather radio any more...and I tend to sleep right through the tornado sirens:rolleyes: I'd love to have my iphone go off right next to me. Are there any other apps out there?

See above. Weather Alert USA is the name of the one that gives the alarms. It's $4.99 and it really works well. The alarms will go off even if the app is not open. It's a bit confusing, so if you get it and have any questions, just let me know and I'll see if I can help.

Sorry about the wrong name. I should have checked my phone myself instead of asking DH.

We've already had several tornado warnings here this morning, and the worst of the storms are supposed to come later this afternoon. Normally, I don't get too scared during storms like this, but this one has a different feel to it. It just feels "weird" outside.

We're on a two-hour school delay right now, and I have a funny feeling we'll being going home early today.

Up from the basement. Was watching the news down there and they said my son's highschool was an "area of concern." :guilty: I hate not having the boys here during tornado warnings. And I hope my little guy is ok at his school - he has anxiety and is really scared of tornados.

Chattanooga just had a sighting of a funnel! Stay safe out there.

Our wind has REALLY picked up already (under a wind advisory until 8pm). I am sitting here waiting to see what happens over the next hour or 2. It's about to hit Knoxville (which is a 2 hour drive), but all the radar I am seeing (local and the Weather Channel) has the line breaking up in the mountains. So, hopefully that keeps up because I HATE storms. They are actually saying that later tonight will be worse! Don't think I will be sleeping too well later!

I need to go to the grocery, but may wait until this line gets past us and try to get there between storms.

*hugs* Keep us updated. I hope your kids are okay.

I am so glad I don't have to be on campus today... All my classes are on the third floor of the building. After a tornado went through already this season, I have been planning on where we should go in case it happens again. The only upside to campus is that the DO have an alarm system for sever weather and other emergencies (put up after VT).

Thank you. They just sent out another warning and extended it until 9:45. Sad thing is, it's supposed to be worse this afternoon.

Hope you and yours stay safe, as well!

I heard that warning - thankfully it seems to have passed his school now. My DD is in the hallway at her school, texting me to get updates. Looks like the worst of this has passed (for now)...

Ok, as I typed it, they just reissued the warning for the next 45 minutes..

I'm in Kentucky and nervous about tomorrow. We did get an app for our iphones that helps - it sends out alarms for watches and warnings (different sound for each) and it's loud enough to wake us up.

We live in Lexington about a mile and a half away from the airport. The other day we were watching a huge rotation cloud over the airport headed right towards us. Kinda scary. It never fully formed into a tornado, though, thank goodness.

We just moved to KY from CO, sounds like we live really close to each other. I'm in Versailles and already this morning the tornados sires have sounded twice! Oh...that storm that came through the other day, I have it on video - really scary!

Didn't think to text my son. Just when you relax they extend it or send out another one! This is crazy.

Welcome to Kentucky. :) It's not always like this. lol

Its ok, no harm done the app was free. DH is working from home and I just asked him to download it, not so much for home but when he travels. He was in Oklahoma, right near where all the destruction took place the week before it happened.

Stay safe & thanks for the info.

PS- I just came back to say DH was looking at it and told me it's an amazing app. It will tell you everything important from all around the world and not just weather, child abductions too, all you have to do is tap it and it will find you. Double thanks!!!
BTW, it is $3.99 now

Hope everyone is still okay. I am sitting here watching the next line of storms make their way slowly in our direction. They just put Knox county until a tornado warning, so really keeping an eye on the radar. Wind is really picking up as the line approaches. I am still keeping my fingers crossed that the mountains will break up the problem cell, but I am prepared to get under the stairs if needed. UGH... I hate this.
