My questions is this:

My wife and I are members and are going to be in Orlando the night before we begin our stay at Animal Kingdom Villas. We will have a friend with us who is leaving the next day so she is not staying with us for our stay at Disney. Since we have the night before free, can we take her to the lounge for the fireworks? I know my wife and I can go with our membership cards. Are we allowed to bring a guest if we do not have a room at the time?

Thanks in advance!

Actually no you cannot.

Bringing the friend isn't an issue. The fact that you are not yet a DVC resort guest IS a problem.

Lounge access is only provided to DVC owners (and their guests) when staying at a DVC resort on points. You need to present a valid room key plus DVC member ID in order to gain entrance. Since it's the day before you will check-in at a DVC resort, you would not have the proper identification. Sorry.

Tim is correct - but it depends upon the CM - some would let you up others won't.

just depends upon who is guarding the entrance.

hmm..we are going to try it anyway..(that is get into Top of the World )

DVC member staying on points at Kidani starting the next day..we have dinner at Chef Mickeys and we will see if we can get in..if not ok..but I am going to try..

They will ask to see your KTTW.

Stayed at POP for 2 days before moving to Boardwalk and we were allowed access to TOWL with member card and pop kttw

Current access information from the member website (select BLT from the Destinations drop down menu):
Top of the World Lounge

Top of the World Lounge is located at Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort.

Disney Vacation Club Members staying at any Disney-owned-and-operated hotel at Walt Disney World Resort (whether they booked with vacation points or cash) may enjoy access to one of the vacation kingdom's most exclusive spaces: the Top of the World Lounge atop Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort through December 29, 2013 (blockout dates in 2013 are July 3 and 4, and December 30 and 31). Current operating hours are 6 p.m. to midnight.

This perk is available exclusively to Members and those in their traveling party who are staying on that Member's reservation. At least one Member in the traveling party must accompany the group and present his or her current Key to the World card displaying a Disney Vacation Club Membership notation in order to gain admission to the lounge. If the Member's Key to the World card doesn't display a Membership notation, a Disney Vacation Club Member ID is required in addition to the Key to the World card to verify Membership.

Note that Members traveling from other Resorts must use Walt Disney World Transportation, as parking is unavailable to anyone not staying at Bay Lake Tower or Disney's Contemporary Resort. Upon arrival, Members must walk to the Bay Lake Tower main lobby entrance on the ground floor and check in at the Top of the World Lounge desk in the lobby.

This special Top of the World Lounge access is available on a first-come, first-served basis until the lounge reaches capacity. As the lounge is particularly popular during the Magic Kingdom fireworks, arriving as early as possible will give Members the best chance of gaining admission.

Are children allowed in the lounge? If we got up to watch the fireworks, do we have to buy anything?

No... even though you are members you also need a DVC reservation as well to go up to the lounge officially.

Does not need to be a DVC reservation, just a DVC Member staying at ANY Disney owned and operated Hotel at WDW. See Post #10.

If you are not able to get up to the lounge / deck, just walk back to the Contemporary, go back up to the 4th floor and walk towards the walkway to BLT. Before you actually enter the walkway, look to your left. There is an observation deck there that has a nice view of the fireworks. Anyone can watch from there and in my experience, it's not usually very crowded.

Just got back from 4 nights at OKW, had to show my room key and member ID card.

The drinks, service and view of the fireworks were great!

The food not so much, cant they have some regular pub type of food up there? We would have stayed a lot longer if they had some decent food. And the guy working the lobby needs to learn how to smile! Jeesh, I dont thinnk I have ever been treated so "gruff" before! :confused3

most of the time it is ladies and fun ones at that - sorry your first CM at BLT was gruff.

have food allergies so afraid to order anything there - they have no kitchen. could at one time order from Waves and have it delivery there - but not sure they still do this.

besides it might take more time than you would want.

That CM has been there forever and he is rarely friendly, don't know how or why he still has a job. He doesn't have any Disney magic!

I'm heading to Disney at the end of August and would like to go to Top of The World when I'm there. When looking at picutures of the lounge I noticed a huge wall on the fireworks deck that wouldn't be a problem for adults to see the fireworks but I wonder if its a problem for little kids. Does anyone have thoughts on this. My kids are 3,5, and 7 and I don't want to waste my time going to top of the world if they won't be able to see anything anyway.

Also how early do you have to get to top of the world? Thanks for any suggestions.

It seems to be under construction now.
