Top Chef Seven--May Contain Spoilers!

I would have totally gone with a pasta bolognese. I'm really surprised nobody did. You could put plenty of vegetables in the sauce, or have a side of vegetables or salad. Very inexpensive, too. Obviously, you could round it out with a dessert or whatever.

I would have also considered some type of "fried rice" dish, with some meat and tasty vegetables in there.

I don't know that Angelo set out to sabotage his team, but when his tool thing broke, he decided it didn't matter, and his dish reflected that.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner. :thumbsup2

That same catering company I mentioned above made boeuf bourguignon. The guests were all moaning and sighing over it. It was made by an authentic French chef with expensive wines cognacs & whatever. When I had it for dinner later, I went, "EWWW!" :crazy2: I'm sure it was tasted exquisite to those who would know, but I don't drink or use alcohol in my foods, other than a splash of white wines. To my palate the burgundy was way overpowering. :p I thought that immediately when Alcohol Girl said she was making sherry chicken. :sad2:

I still think of tomatoes as a vegetable.
A while back, the government tried to pass off ketchup in the school menu as a serving of vegetable. :confused3

I'm also allergic to most raw fruits (called Oral Allergy Syndrome.) That now explains why I'm allergic to raw tomatoes, too.

I don't drink at all, I guess that's why I hate that taste, too. I was once a spokesperson for Jenny Craig and they use wines for taste since it's low fat and I HATED it!! :scared:

And I STILL treat tomatoes like a vegetable... :thumbsup2

I don't know how accurate this site is, but it appears not all the alcohol burns off during cooking :confused3

Even if it's not true, I can't imagine an elementary school being okay with serving an alcohol-based dish to students.

I guess since I cook with alcohol and my kids have always eaten it, I figured it was a more mainstream flavor-enhancer than what some of you have said.

Like I said before, I don't think that using sherry was inappropriate, I just think it was weird to spend so much of the budget on it when other things were available.

I didn't think that anyone should have made pasta salad. That holds the kiss of death like making dessert does. I agree with the PP, a pasta bolognese would have been where my thoughts went and you can load that up with vegetables that the kids don't even know are there, ala Jamie Oliver's pasta in Food Revolution.

Having said that, I think the budgeting for this was a little out of whack since schools can get bigger discounts by buying in bulk and they are not buying for one meal at a time so there is carryover from one meal to the next. These chefs were only cooking for 50 kids. I understand the concept of this budget, but it was still different in many ways from how a school cafeteria budgets.

Oh my Gosh!!! Everyone, go to the Bravo Top Chef page and look at Arnold's photo diary. On the last page, the girl in blue standing next to Arnold is me!

Here is a link, took me FOREVER to get thru that site: http://www.bravotv.com/top-chef/season-7/photos/arnold-myint

How do you know Arnold, Lttlmc? Do you work with him? Great pics! :woohoo:

I like the poll about the sherry! :lmao:

No, I don't work with him. It's kinda hard to follow, but Ben has been my closest and best male friend since we were in High School. (Ben is the guy in the picture before mine wearing the green sweater). Anywho, Ben and Arnold met last year and have since become best friends, so Arnold is Ben's guy friend and I'm Ben's best girlfriend. Arnold and I met through him and hang out a lot. Let me tell you , that boy is super fun!

Great pic, lttlmc3! He's got a harem. :dance3: :teeth:

I love this show! When are the contestants going to learn that the one who cooks dessert gets sent home.

Several people have said this but there were quite a few "desserts" in this challenge. The ice cream with the yams and the black bean cake with the yam "wig" were both in the top picks. Also the judges loved the yogurt cream. Not all desserts tanked this week.

That is really cool!

I've never watched TC before this season, so I would have no idea about the desserts. I think this was a fun challenge to watch. I wish I had the independent wealth to be able to run a kitchen in a school. That would be FUN.

Tracey and Angelo make a weird pair. I'm turned off by his attitude. And yeah, it's a competition... but I just don't do that drama. It bugs me.

Anyone see Entourage last night? Stephan(sp) from last season had a small part!

You also aren't a cheftestant on the show. I would assume if you are going to participate on the show, you would have watched some of the back episodes.

So happy Top Chef is back. Wasn't too fond of Top Chef Masters. Haven't really formed any opinions yet of the new season. We will have to wait and see.
