WOW! What surprises me most about this thread is how many of you have freezers on the bottom!
I did not know that they even MADE these any more. I can remember my Grandma having a refrig like that.
Out of curiousity - because our refrig is over 16 years old and you never know when it will go - what are the benefits of having the freezer on the bottom?
I had a side by side and hated it. When it went on the fritz, I got a top and bottom. NO ICE MAKER! The old fridge had one and made a mess. Besides, I don't like tap water. I make ice with bottled water.
I have a Maytag Wide-by-Side. Mine's black, but here's a picture I found of a white one:
See the zig-zaggy door division? The fridge is wider at top, narrower at bottom. The freezer is wider at bottom, narrower at top. I think this is the best idea! I can put big platters in the fridge, pizzas in the freezer.
I practically celebrated when my old one bit the dust and I bought this one! (Sorry, I get excited about some pretty mundane stuff...)
When DH and I first got married he had a top and bottom, when it died we bought a side by side. I hated it. The day it quit I bought another top and bottom. Freezer on the top, does have an ice maker and filtered water dispenser.
Ours is a top and bottom, with the freezer on top. It was actually my in-law's refrigerator, because when we moved here (this is the house my DH grew up in) our refrigerator opened on the "wrong side" and if they would have taken theirs it, too, would have opened on the "wrong side" for them as well so we just traded. Ours is a General Electric and is at least 29 years old. It has had some minor repair but still "going strong." I wish it would die though!! I really want a side-by-side with water and ice in the door!!
