Toothache next to extracted tooth - how long?

Call the Oral Surgeon back and tell them yes, it's an emergency, you have an abcess and severe pain post tooth extraction yesterday (hey, fight fire with fire ).

OT - it really doesn't matter who calls in the prescription. I would not wait. Every hour that you do, the infection is growing as bacteria multiply, so it could get worse. I'm surprised one of them didn't start you on one in the first place - maybe each one thought the other would? From what I've seen, our dentist won't even pull a tooth unless the abcess is treated first.

Dentist mentioned not liking to put females on antibiotics due to all the other problems it gives us. Its was just the beginning of an abcess in xrays, no visible signs. Maybe that's why they didn't give.

Another thought to help distinguish types of pain - how does it feel when you drink something hot? What about cold?

No pain from hot / cold before or after extraction.

So at least it wasn't an oversight. But now, things haven't improved. Let them know about the increased/ongoing pain and they can make the determination if you need antibiotics. It will be easier to deal with this now than at 2am. I agree that motrin will help a lot in the meantime. Good luck.

Over a week now of pain in one form or another. Aleve isn't cutting it anymore.

ETA I see you're taking Aleve. It's an NSAID like motrin and you shouldn't take both, just one or the other.

You could have a fractured tooth. That can give you some pain. You might want to try sensidine tooth paste.

Humm, that's weird. As far as I know (and correct me if I am missing something) the only "problem" is a possible yeast infection. I'm not one to jump at being on an antibiotic unless necessary, but if you need one, it's best to take them. I'll give the dentist the benefit of the doubt though, maybe he didn't think the antibiotic was necessary. Feel better soon!

I agree with Pea-n-Me on everything.

Hasn't he heard of Activia and Diflucan? The itchies are the worst I agree but I think an infection in your tooth trumps an infection you-know-where.

I'm just sayin.

Ok. 2 hrs ago, I took 600mg Motril (3x200mg). I've been feeling fine now for a while. (FYI, I was only taking 1 Aleve or not even every 12 hrs. Last Aleve I think was Sat afternoon, so that's probably ok to take Motrin now. Even when I did take it, it just didn't seem to do much.)

My dentist just called. Yes, he was out sailing & phone was stored away so just got messages. Told him all. 600mg was good & I can go as high as 800mg he says. Still hates antibiotics. I'm not a smoker (he was wondering about dry socket). Extraction wasn't difficult. He says to see if its feeling any worse tomorrow & if so call surgeon back. I'm ok with that answer because now at least the pain is gone thanks to Motrin. Maybe the surgeon will do antibiotics since he knows more about how the extraction went.

I really like my dentist & have always had no problems with him & trust him. I've had him since 4th grade....and I'm 44 yrs old. He's done lots of work on me. Many fillings & previously did 7 extractions for braces when I was 16 yrs old. My parents & I still go to him & we've all moved out of the immediate area.
