Took the plunge - now what and Use Year Question

My guide called me yesterday and I went ahead and bought 150 points. (The conversation was smooth and pleasant - I said I'd heard there was a referral incentive and he said we were getting that rate - 86.00 per point. Thanks to those of you who offered to be my referral - I think he used the name that we provided when we did the tour.) I gave him my credit card number and boom - we're on our way.

So what happens now? I guess they'll be fed-Exing some documents next week. Once we get those, how long does it usually take to close, and what are the steps?

Also, a bigger question for me is the use year. While they are currently selling December, my guide indicated that I can have a later use year. My concern with December is that our favorite vacation time tends to be in September-December since we don't have children and aren't tied to a school year schedule. I've read that it's better to have your Use Year month be just before you vacation rather than just after.

The downside is that we'd lose the 2006 points, but our 2007 vacation is already booked and paid for (Not Disney) and so we don't need the 2006 points particulary. (We would save a bit in fees, since they wouldn't kick in until April which is the Use Year I'm considering.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Abby

If your guide is sending your paperwork then your use year has already been decided for you, since it is on the paperwork. I received my paperwork on the Tuesday after giving my guide CC info on the prior Friday. You can begin making reservations for Disney resorts as soon as you get your paperwork, for dates after your use year begins.

Well welocme home and to the DIS.
Cloding generally happen about 4 weeks after Disney receieves their paperwork. But since you did buy from Disney your benefits start right away. As far as UY I'm not really sure how that works. We bought a sold out resort so we were stuck with whatever they had. I've heard SSR is selling Dec UY but will soon offer Feb. Good Luck and have fun.........
In my opinion UY's dont really matter.......it all in the planning.

Just to clarify - my guide did say that he could give us an April use year if we wanted it, but we'd only get 2007 points. He said that we had a little time to change it). I know it's generally December.

thanks,

I will assume that your guide has not sent out your paperwork yet and is awaiting your decision for use years. I only say this because your use year has to be determined for your closing paperwork to be drawn up.

As far as use year is concerned, I didn't over analyze it because we are fairly young and our vacation habits will change over time. At the moment, we vacation mostly during the summer months because we do have school aged children. When the kids are gone we won't be tied to a specific time of year, so what works for us now may not in the future.

And sorry I forgot to congratulate you in my last reply.

I wouldn't stress too much about use year, because as others have said, your habits will likely change after a few years, so what is optimum now may not be in the future. We don't worry about use year anyway. We just plan our trips ahead and should we ever happen to need to cancel last minute, we'll take our lumps...Hasn't happened yet in 10 years of DVC trips, so I doubt it's going to be any big issue for us ever.
