There were 2 racks of bathing suits that were on sale. Same brand, name escapes me. There was, what I think is a very important feature of a man's bathing suit that was missing. The netting!!! Don't get me wrong. I don't know much about a man's anatomy and the comfort of how clothing fits. I'm just wondering...is that something that should be missing from a bathing suit? (Not a speedo, a regular run-of-the-mill man's suit).

My DS wouldn't even consider trying it on.

Well, I wear an athletic support under them, so that wouldn't be an issue for me. That goes back to being required to wear a cup during high school water polo.

There's been a big push recently that the netting is dangerous and can cause damage to that... region. I can't speak to how true that is because I haven't researched it but maybe that's why?

Once my boys were 12 or so, no more netting! Boxer shorts/boxer briefs/compression shorts under board shorts. I just got an order from Kohl’s - no netting for ds15 and ds20, netting for DH.

I think if there is netting, then no need for boxers/briefs, just the trunks.

Sans netting? I wouldn't feel comfortable unless I was wearing some form of underwear underneath them.

My husband probably wouldn't buy one without netting. He's a creature of habit and that's what he's used to.

My son prefers not to have the netting because he wears his underarmour compression shorts underneath. He thinks swim trunks on their own (with or without netting) have too high a "see up the leg-hole" factor, like in that episode of Friends with the guy who went commando in gym shorts, and since he likes to wear things baggy he might very well be right about that.

I have to take issue with some of that article. The part that says that "parts of male anatomy "swells" when wet" is a little wrong. Especially if the water is cold. It is amazing the things that advertisers will say to get business. I shaved for 40 years before they told me that it hurt to shave. Or that aftershave stings so bad that it makes you grimace. I suppose if you dry shave and jab the blade sideways into your face it might hurt, otherwise it is painless and the minor sting is so minor that by the time you put the bottle down it is completely without tingle. Leave it to Madison Avenue to create a need that really doesn't exist.

My DH and DS wear the netting. I know a few of DS friends wear the without the netting and some form of boxers.

To me that would feel like I peed my pants, you know like your pants are dry from the flood but the undies are still wet with pee. Not that I, a 46 yo female with 3 kids would know what it feels like to laugh, sneeze or cough and pee my pants....

If they made dry fit undies to wear under them then maybe. But I also think of the moisture in that area that does not get to dry and gets funky.

This has been an "interesting" thread. My boys are under 10, and all of the swim trunks have the netting. They do wear underwear as that is what they feel comfortable doing. Do not remember about DH's swim trunks.

I don't think you need to wear underwear with them, but you might want to.
 My DH didn't know it was optional (and let's not tell him). I bought him a new pair of trunks before our recent vacation and it didn't have the netting. Since I got them at a Marshalls-type place we both just assumed they were factory-seconds and the missing liner was a flaw. He wore them with under-armor compression boxers.
