Too Young?

Do you think that 11 is too young to expect my daughter to clean her bathroom? Sink and toilet, wearing gloves? I do the floors?

My mother seems to think it is totally gross and not appropriate at her age.

BTW - I was cleaning bathrooms at that age (my mom seems to have memory loss).

Since DS11 did the sinks, toilet, shower and floors in his bathroom today I guess you know my answer.

DD has been cleaning her own bathroom since she was 9. 11 is not too young. Then again, I'm mean like that.

When I was 13 and my brothers were 11 and 9 we alternated cleaning assignments every Sunday. One cleaned each of the two bathrooms and one the kitchen on a rotation. Our mom inspected the rooms and let us know what we missed and how to clean them.

We have all survived into adulthood and have managed to even stay out of prison so it must not have damaged us too badly.

My 8 year old cleans all 4 bathrooms in the house except the shower in the master bathroom (it is really difficult to clean and takes about 2 hours to do it properly - yes I hate it!)

So 11, yeah she can handle it.

I don't know what is so difficult. I have DS use Shaklee products on the sink and mirrors. He just swishes the toilet bowl cleaner around, I do generally squirt all the toilets. He even mops the floor. He uses a bit of Scrubbing bubbles or similar in the tubs or if the sink is really bad. Sometimes he'll run a Clorox wipe on the counters.

I know my neighbor's 6 year old does their toilets and bathroom counters.

Thanks everyone for your replies. My mother went nuts (ranting and raving) when I told her that my daughter was going to start cleaning her own bathroom.
You would have thought I told her she was using her tongue to clean it.
I really think my mother is insane.

I taught my son at about 11. He doesn't always clean it but he can and will.

My daughter was not only cleaning the bathroom well before 11, she was also doing her own laundry, helping to clean our reptile and amphibian cages, and sometimes she did dishes. My daughter understood at a young age that everybody who lives under our roof is an equal partner. We're in it together and if she wants to enjoy the fun parts of being a family, she has to help out with the not so fun parts. Such is life. She's 18 and a wonderful young adult so I don't think cleaning toilets had any lasting damage!

I've been cleaning our bathroom for about 3 years. Mostly I just do the sink and the toilet and occasionally the cabinets when I think they need a good cleaning. I don't use gloves for any of it and my parents mop the floor and clean the bathtubs when they do the other. I do most of the laundry for the bathroom, too. I don't think 11 is too young. It doesn't take that long, and it's sparkly, clean, and smells so much better!

Seriously, kudos to all of you teaching simple life skills to your kids (girls & boys) at a young age. I was married to one that was clueless and it's tougher to teach when they're 30...

when i was 11 i was cleaning the bathroom, vaccuming, dusting, taking out the trash, doing the dishes, laundry(putting the laundry in AND folding all of it) and cleaning up anything else my parents wanted me to do.

but then again....my parents thought that i was a slave, rather than a child....


but i honestly don't think having her clean her bathroom is a horrible thing at 11. even if i wasn't asked to do it, i probably would have at least cleaned my bathroom had i had my own at the time, just to keep things tidy and nice looking, you know?

DD was more than capable of cleaning the bathrooms long before she was 11. I prefer, however, for her to clean the kitchen floor - simply because she likes to do it, and she does a fabulous job at it! So - she generally does the floors about the same time I hit the bathrooms.
