"Too tall" for space mountain?

My husband is 6"6' and is worried about riding space mountain for fear of losing his head ha.

Seriously though, we have heard that really tall people should avoid space mountain as it could be a safety hazard...any comments/advice?

Should we skip it or is it safe?

I would ask the attendant. My DH is 6 ft 4 and we asked before going on, as he last rode it as an early teen. The attendant told us there was no height restriction.

My DH sat in front of me and boy what a show did I receive!! The first light tunnel scared the carp out of him. He hunkered down as best as he could and tried to "turtle" his head into his chest. I have never seen him do this before and laughed all the way through as he was scared to sit upright.

Fast forward to this year, and DH refused to go back on. My nephew is 6 ft 2 or 3 went on with my niece and myself. I let my niece in on my story of my DH and told my nephew to keep sitting up straight throughout. Well, the first light tunnel was not working and all lit white for him to see the true height of it. It was not that scary for him for the tunnels. What was scary was the sound equipment they used and he swears it brushed his ear or head a few times as he kept trying to sit up straight. He was scared due to that compared to the light tunnels.

I truly don't know how close they have placed the speakers to the track but you may wish to ask about that. You could also ask to have him sit where there is the most leg room so if there is an issue he could try to duck down as much as possible if required.

I hope both of you can go on this ride. I will always have great memories.

I'm very tall as well and was nervous about riding Space Mountain too. Honestly, I have to believe that Disney would have some type of height restriction on that ride of there's any danger at all.

There is no danger at all.

There are some people who will, on any roller coaster, ride with their hands up in the air to show no fear. There has never been any report of any of these people ever getting hand injuries or broken wrists.

I have, may years ago as part of a special promotion, ridden Space with the lights on. There is no place where structure comes anywhere that it could be dangerous for anyone seated, even with hands up high.

The first time a rode SM back in 1979 I was thinking the same thing (I'm 6'4") even though I logically knew I would be fine. Every time since it is in the back of my mind. Having said that I've always wondered if you can touch the top of the first tunnel and I've read posts on this board that you can.

He will be fine.

DH is 6'3 and is a thrill junkie, he never holds on. He believes it is his life's mission to keep his hands up on any coaster...including Space Mt.
So with his "ape" arms high above his head he easily passes 6'6 and hasn't lost a hand yet.

Actually it was his knees he was worried about. Because they stick out a little bit, but again nothing.

As with most coasters, it is an optical illusion that you could bang your head or need to duck. There is plenty of room.

My dad is the same height--5' 18" as he likes to say--and he won't ride Space Mountain. He's afraid he's going to be decapitated. Heck, my sister is 5'6" and she says the same thing.

I'm sure it's fine. He could always duck his head if it makes him feel better.

I have this exact fear this year being 5'9 myself and I'm terrified my head will fly right off in one of the tunnels

But I plan to get on anyway because I trust the Disney Parks not to kill me and I know how they are with safety standards so if there needed to be a height restriction there would be.

I am 6'6" and have ridden Space Mountain multiple times. Still have my head...

It is a tad tight for leg room but works great...

there's one spot where you swear you are going to hit your head on the track - no matter how short you are - it looks like you are going to lose you head.

No one ever has.

I've also been in line when they've had to turn the lights on and you'd be so amazed at how small the roller coaster really is.

I'm sure if it was a safety hazard, Disney would impose a maximum height, they don't want to get sued. It's just an illusion how close it is.

I second this completely. We were once unfortunate to be riding when the lights came on due to some issue with the ride. I had always assumed that the tracks were close, but really there is far more space that you think there will be. I don't see anyway even with hands up that you could hit anything, I am sure Disney would not allow guests on a ride that could potentially result in a law suit! You'll be fine!

PArt of the 'thrill effect' of any roller coaster is the perceived danger. And on almost all coasters, one of those perceived elements of danger is passing to closely to overhead beams, supports, etc. I do not think there has ever been a person clipped by any support, beam etc on any coaster where the rider was riding as designed (not standing up on a coaster not designed to be stood up on). I am 6'6", do feel the perception of losing my head, but that is the way that ride and most others are constructed. I am sure you could be 7' tall, with arms fully extended, and not come close.

I'm 6'8". If I sit in 3 or 6, I have the most leg room. Yes, I duck and have a slight fear of hitting my head, but as everyone has already posted, no one's ever lost a hand, so I really shouldn't be nervous.

My husban is 6'4 and while there in January we rode space mountain several times with no incident, however I would point out that maybe out in the "open" area you cant reach anything with your hands. My husband had NO problem touching the top of the tunnel. I had mentioned that it looked really tight and the guys in our group started arguing, one saying no way and the other saying maybe, so of course they had to ride again to find out and yes they both were able to touch in the tunnel. Which in turn kept their hands down for the rest of the ride!!

My husband is 6'5"...he's fine. Only problem is the leg room. It will probably be uncomfortable, but doable.
