Too Many Acronymns!

I'd like to create a new acronym, BADHA, which you all have proudly earned!

First, Thank You to all the regular contributors for your participation and for sharing information that helps others. This board is a great resource! Thanks also to the newbies and lurkers who ask good questions to which other participants can respond. The diversity makes for a vibrant community.

I was actually thinking of this topic last night. I read a very good trip report and could only guess what TM means. The Manager? Theme-park Man? Ah, maybe Team Member! Still, it was a distraction the entire read.

I'm sure there's some sensible middle ground.
- a new visitor, who may only visit the board a few times a year, needs to be patient and take the time (and find/print an abbreviation lookup page) to better understand the vernacular of this board
- veteran posters, whose post counts have 3 or 4 digits (thank you for all your participation!) could lighten up a bit on the abbreviations, or, as one poster recommended, spell it out once, and then abbreviate after, especially when context is important

For nearly 3 decades, my schooling and jobs have been full of Three Letter Acronyms (TLAs) and creative uses of language from people around the world. When the reader is not fully aware of the context, or when English is not their primary language, these convenient abbreviations - to quote Sir Topham Hatt - "cause confusion and delay". When people's time and attention are limited, it's helpful when one can read something and understand it as it's being read.

I'm a human being - Please don't judge me by my post count. ;-)

Well stated.

Although acroyms have become part of our daily lives, there are times when their use should be restricted. On this forum, there are women and men of all ages from all over the world. With different backgrounds and levels of experience with Disney, there is bound to be confusion. Clarity would be helpful to many who participate in these postings.

Often a thread is begun containing numerous sentences. The responses can be as lenghty or longer. With that many words written, where is the advantage to inserting acroynms into the lot? Saves time? Maybe a second of two. Why not abbreviate all of the words? That will save a ton of time! But the result would be just more confusion for the reader.

Consider this. We all post because we would like to have others hear our opinions and stories. We post to learn. We read the posts to gather information and to be entertained. How many people when seeing the acroynms abandon the reading of the posting? When that happens, your opinion and stories are not heard. When that happens, the advice you may have sought is ignored by someone who may very well have given you priceless information or help.

Here's one you probably haven't heard before . . .

My job title of Judicial Secretary was recently changed to Administrative Support Specialist, hence . . . A.S.S.

Totally unrelated to Disney, but just had to share. Someone obviously did not think that through! :rotfl2:

Nice... In Seattle we have the South Lake Union Trolley. There was a coffee shop selling shirts using acronym for the trolley... They said "Ride the S***"

Funny! Definitely not thought out ahead of time.
Well, here's the upside: If there's ever a dispute, you could tell your spouse/significant other that he/she can simply kiss the Judge's A.S.S.

True story. A U.S. business unit had a parent company abbreviated as G.E.M.S. They added a business unit called H.I.T. The initial announcement of the new business unit: yes, G.E.M.S.H.I.T.

Bravo, and Thank You!

Come on, why rob someone of that wonderful head-scratching moment where they go, "Okay, I've gotten most of these so far, but what TF does MNSSHP mean?" :confused3 :rotfl2:

(When that head-scratcher was me, back in the day, 2 seconds on Google gave me the answer.)

I wouldn't think many would walk away. Most would do the adult thing and ask if they were confused. Not just throw their hands up in the air, say "Wow this is all too much for my brain to comprehend!" and leave.

I have what I call a 'can't be bothered' filter. Too many acronyms, and I'm off. I don't have the time or the inclination to work out some of these posts - and I certainly don't have time to spend ages going and looking everything up.

I think it would be much easier to ask for clarification that it would be to go off and try to find the info you were looking for somewhere else. That is your choice. Just as it is my choice to continue to use acronyms.

I'm sorry if this is out of line but the acronyms are getting out of control on this forum. Half the time I can't figure out what the poster is trying to say.

Is it really that hard to just type the word? At least use the word once and then abbreviate it so people that don't live on this board 365 days a year know what you are talking about. I've been building up to this post for a while so please don't think any one person's post is why I am writing this.

or

ISITIOOLBTAAGOOCOTF. HTTICFOWTPITTS. IIRTHTJTTW? ALUTWOATAISPTDLOTB365DAYKWYATA. IBBUTTPFAWSPDTAOPPIWIAWT. pirate:

I'm SO with you on this! I can't figure out half of what people are saying. Just type it people!! Or maybe there is some cool club of acronyms I don't know about (that would be the CCA). Or, as someone suggested, type it once in your post, then abbreviate!

Sometimes it's a game to me to figure out what it is. If I can't figure it out I move on to the next post. There are issues with acronyms. If you typo one letter it may make it impossible for people to understand what you are saying. Also there are times when someone may mean grandfather but interpret it as girlfriend. Sm drives me crazy too. Is it space or splash mountain.

This thread was on its way to zombie stage with my glad tidings. Who woke this monster up?

I'll say it again. Posters will use acronyms that not everyone will understand. Asking them (us) to change that is pointless. If someone who doesn't understand an acronym is too proud to ask what that means or "can't be bothered", then I don't think they really cared about the answer in the first place. And therefore I don't care that I used a commonly-used acronym within this fan community.

Agreed. And with that I will stop feeding the trolls so to speak. They can continue to complain and I will continue to post how I see fit. And as stubborn as I am that will probably be with more acronyms than before. But if someone asks I will be more than happy to explain what I mean. Same as before.:wave2:
