Too Many Acronymns!

I wonder if those who have an issue with the use of "brekkie" know that the word is very commonly used in the UK to describe breakfast. I'm British American and every day growing up I heard, "it's time for brekkie" or some such variation. It is even written on menu boards and the like.

I guess I just find it strange that some would go "ew" over it since to many it's about as normal as using the word "supper".:rotfl:

Yeah, I didn't think there was anything wrong with 'brekkie', either - Brit, again.

The one I REALLY hate is 'Holibobs'. That is pukingly cutsie and I try to block it from my mind!

('Holibobs' = holiday - which is what we call vacation).

And of course there's the notion that his post doesn't even belong on this board. It is better suited to the community board since it has nothing to do with theme park planning.

If I had a dollar for every thread that's on this board rather than the community board where it's a better fit, I'd be rich. ;)

Actually, no, I didn't. ;)

My mother-in-law (MIL) texts using shorthand all of the time. At first I thought she was doing it to "be cool". She said that on her phone it is challenging to text and is easier for her to do Ty, ttyl, 4 (instead of for), u (instead of you), and so on.

I actually did know about "brekkie" being used in the UK, which is why that one doesn't bother me. But "hubs" and "hubby"? Eh.

GROMMMIT! Time for brekkie! :)

Yeah, I suppose it's important to keep in mind the international audience when it comes to colloquialisms. I still wonder how the Brits manage to get past all the posts about fanny packs?

I cringe every time I read the f***y word... I can't even bring myself to type it. It's just too rude!

We laugh mostly. Unless you're my grandmother and then you cringe because your little ones are saying the word fanny and getting away with it.:scared1:

I have to admit I still snicker about it at times. Childish yes but to me, seeing a sign in Disney World with the word fanny on it is all kind of hilarious.:rotfl:

Interesting. It's quite innocuous here.

Yeah. What do you think when you hear 'bum bag', which is what we call a fanny pack?

I'm gonna go out to my car, load my suitcases in the boot, check under the bonnet to make sure I've got enough oil, check the fuel gauge to see if I've got enough petrol. After making sure I haven't left anything on the pavement, I'll get in and drive off to the nearest motorway to head for the airport.

I'll put my purse and bumbag in my handbag along with my paperwork.

On the way, hubby and I discuss what we're going to have for breakfast, lunch and dinner when we arrive at the resort. Also, will he want to change out of his trousers and put his shorts on?

Let me know if anyone needs a translation into 'American'! :rotfl2:

Amazingly enough, I understood about 98% of that. lol

What's the difference between a purse & a handbag? Those words are pretty interchangeable in the states.

Hi- I am probably about the lurkiest lurker you have in this community. My first post was like a day ago, but I have been lurking daily on these boards for years, quietly benefiting from the information shared by others.

What am I? GRATEFUL-- for Robo's maps, Mesa's FP+ primer, up-to-the minute reports from the Frozen events this weekend-- seriously, the tremendous effort put forth by the members of this community to help others plan informed, efficient, magical Disney experiences is beyond reproach. And I still can't believe it's FREE.

So-- did I have to wade through some abbreviations at first? Well, sure. But that is such a tiny price to pay for the time and money this board saves my family each year as we plan our WDW vacations. Please keep abbreviating-- if it means you will keep altruistically sharing your experiences and expertise! Thank you all again :)

When I moved to the US I swear I thought they spoke a different language here and not English. It took me years to understand the American version of English and even now many, many years later I get confused and have to ask, "what?"

I remember laughing hysterically over hearing a man talk about his suspenders once. Then again American's wear braces on their teeth and not their trousers so....:rotfl:

.

If you are going to backhandedly reference me, at Lear do so correctly. I didn't criticize you for not responding at all. I took note and commented on that you were willing to come back and respond to rudeness, while you have ignored sincere responses and then came back and claimed that the responses you are getting are all rude. They are not, in fact, all rude. Those are just the ones you are choosing to respond to.

I'm not going to respond to every post in this thread. I've already been criticized for posting too much and not posting enough. I also thanked one person who made what I thought was a very reasoned response. I'm not going to respond to every post that agrees with me or I consider a good post even though it disagrees with me or presents an opposing opinion because then I would be accused of trying in inflate my post count. (I've been accused of that a few times in this thread.)

I've obviously angered some people and that is where the responses are coming from. The title of this thread is "Too many Acronyms!". It is not "No Acronyms at all, ever, under any circumstance!" The change I am suggesting would effect people so little that as far as I can tell the responses I'm getting are based mostly on an emotional response to what is being taken as a personal attack. I can see where a theoretical person who has been posting here for years wouldn't even have it occur to them that they might sometimes be hard to understand to new users. Especially if they are in the context of replying to a question. They use the acronym because that is what they have used for years and it has not occurred to the person they are responding to might not understand. This is not any reflection on their character or any other personal flaw. However, if somebody then brings up that they are hard to understand or confusing and it is pointed out that a lot of this could be cleared up by taking an action that would literally effect them a couple times a week and each time would only take very little effort then why not spend the time on a couple extra keystrokes. The consensus response I'm getting is because they don't want to or don't want to be understood by new people (yes that response is in this thread) or don't care about new people or if they went to France they would need to speak French.

I wish I could take back "lazy" since it has now become the focus of the thread and I said it out of frustration at what I perceived to be a complete misunderstanding of my point. I'm suggesting a very low effort change based on context of when the response is made. A lot of responses also mention workplace communication. In any decent workplace you would be educated on the acronyms before working. It is your job and responsibility to learn them. In an open internet forum you can create a list but nobody will read it. The best way to teach is to use and if using with no prior context then to define and use. I do it a lot. Every day of every week when communicating with people with less knowledge of the systems I manage. I even jump in to clarify when I see a communication go out from an Engineer I think might be a bit confusing for the end user. I sit in the U.S. but communicate between India, Mexico, and Canada including French Canadian speakers. I spend a lot of time each week on English to English translations between these various teams of people who are not native English speakers. I am attuned to the types of communications that cause confusion because of all the many misunderstandings I have had to clear up over the years. This thread was not an attack on this forum and its users but an attempt to make it even better than it is.

I had to Google to find out what it means in British slang. Totally different part of the anatomy! :rotfl:

Oh boy, is it...

When I first saw the Simpsons' episode where they go to stay at the Flander's beach house, and Lisa "forgets" all her clothes so she can be cool, Marge describes a cute little sunsuit having a starfish on the f***y... not knowing at the time what that term meant in America, I nearly died! :rotfl:

My wife watches Ladies of London, so I got most of that :rotfl2:
