Too bad this wasn't posted on the DIS

I'm changing my job description from SAHM to Kept Woman.

As a mom I don't get any days off. Maybe kept women have a more liberal vacation policy.

Gosh I just sent in my jury survey. I could have used that for occupation.

:teeth: Several years ago, the county had a vote as to whether to get rid of the old law. I thought, "Goodie! They'll finally get rid of it, and I can go shopping in Paramus." (I love the malls there.) Those wacky NJersians voted to keep the law! I guess not enough un-kept women could get off of work to cast their votes. :p

We just enjoy actually being able to drive without any traffic one day a week!!

At least that is why i voted to keep the blue laws!! LOL

Never been, is it nice? Wildwood is becoming a bit scary but we still love the boardwalk.

Wait? they are open but close off 1/2 the store?? That's crazy!
Yes!
Also Paramus where the malls are have stricter blue laws-like the grocery stores I go to (not in Paramus) sell everything, every day-the grocery stores in Paramus rope off the brooms and mops section-and if you work in an office there, you can't go in and do any work. My husband is an accountant and has worked in Paramus in the past and if they were crazy busy, they still couldn't pop into the office on a Sunday if needed.

We used to have Rickels in my town, they used to rope off the lumber. :confused:Everything else you could buy, but not that.

We do have a Chik Fil A but it's in the mall, which is also closed Sunday, so either way we wouldn't have it. LOL

I don't eat at Chik-fil-a either because they are not open on Sundays...

Though the real reason is because it seems the only day I WANT it is Sundays! :rotfl:

Living in the south you sort of just get used to it... that and the insane short hours anyplace that IS open has.

I "keep" myself by working for my own money, does that make me a kept woman, too?

I am still so shocked when people from other lands mention these laws.

Are you being kept in designer handbags? :teeth:

I never thought of NJ being an "other land". . . :scratchin . . . now that you mention it, yes, it qualifies. :lmao: Oh, they are going to kill me. I won't be able to travel through Joisey again. :duck:

Come on, admit it. You just like being a kept woman. ;)

That's in case the kept women want to beat their hubbies over the head with a wooden stick. :scared1:

I am still so shocked when people from other lands mention these laws. Never grew up with them, have no idea why they exist. It sounds so backwards to me but to each, their own. I would imagine stores here would go out of business if they had to not sell something or close one day a week or whatever it is.
.

Other lands!:lmao:

Actually Garden State Plaza, which is the largest mall where we live(I think the largest in NJ as well), is very profitable, even though it's only open 6 days a week. Everything else is closed on Sundays, too, so it's not like their competition is selling and they're not.
Most people don;t bother driving to a neighboring county to shop on Sunday. Being from Bergen County you get used to everything being 5-10 minutes away, driving 25-30 minutes to a mall on a Sunday is just something I wouldn't bother doing-I'd rather wait until Monday and drive 5 minutes,

Everyone is used to the laws, so you plan around it. You need to go to the mall this weekend, you make sure you're available to go on Saturday.

From http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/flowchart/2009/6/26/americas-most-profitable-malls.html notes that it is one of the most profitable malls in the country:

Westfield Garden State Plaza, Paramus, N.J. (95 percent; $702). A choice location in the suburbs about 15 miles west of New York City puts this mall—New Jersey's biggest—within easy driving distance of more than 1 million prosperous consumers. A recent renovation and a slate of top-tier merchants helps keep the cash registers ringing.

And frankly, we live in a city pretty well populated with Chick-Fil-A's, and they are surrounded by competition. And they are surely not struggling.

They have never been open on Sundays.

I hate that Chik-Fil-A is closed on Sundays, but that doesn't mean I'll deprive myself of Chicken Minis the other 6 days...:rotfl:

:rotfl2: maybe you need a support group.

Anyway, Does anyone else feel that on Monday you are more exhausted than if you hadn't had the day off?

I'm a bit long in the tooth so I remember when the banks and stores were primarily closed on Sunday. Maybe it's not such a bad idea.

I find that now, I simply fill up my Sundays with more "junk" to do. Nothing to do, go to the mall. Need 1 egg, go to the supermarket buy a bunch of stuff I had no intentions of buying.

Monday rolls around and it's time to go back to work and I realize I never really had a day off.

Now I force myself and my family to keep the day, not for religious reasons but for family connect time.

I'm a much happier camper on Monday.

Lately I have been trying to take it easy on Sundays. I try and just hang out at home, maybe do some baking or stamping scrapbooking or catch up on reading. I might do a little house work like laundry (not too big of a chore since it is just me). I have really limited my errands on Sundays. Sometimes Target will call my name, but it is only a few minutes from my house and not that big of a deal to make a trip too.

Even though I would love to have the blue laws go away, there is something to be said for a day when it's not as easy to go out shopping.

Sundays we go to church if I'm in one of my attending phases and we go grocery shopping and that's about it-otherwise we hang around the house and relax-it is kind of nice to have a day where it's kind of enforced to have nothing to do.:thumbsup2

To make it even more worth your drive there are 2 stamping/scrapbooking stores within 30 mins of the mall

Oh you're killing me!! Maybe I should go visit my cousin in Randolph instead of her coming here. I could just happen to swing by a few scrap stores.

I went shopping, for nothing really special or important today. I bought scrapbook paper, some wooden suitcases to alter for my craft room, and some flowers for my BFF's centerpieces for her wedding. Which I'm making, free of charge. Oh that was bad? I'm not earning my keep.
and I didn't ask my hubby permission to go out either, is that against the Kept woman rules?

He did however call me to see if it was ok that he went to a Fragile X fundraiser dinner and concert. Does that make him a kept man? Probably not since it's his money he's spending.

I wish I could spend my Sundays doing family stuff or nothing. I'm usually driving DH to the airport. He travels a lot so he usually flies on Sunday because it's easier then flying on a school day. We only have 1/2 a day Saturday and 1/2 a day Sunday with him.

With that cranky attitude she didn't even need to say she wasn't "kept." I assumed it;)

What surprised me about her reply was (on that site) people typically wait until they have more than 28 posts before they get all snarky. :rotfl:

Yes, Ocean City is wonderful. Very clean, and family oriented. It's a "dry town." No liquor bought within the city limits or guzzling on the beaches. LOTS of liquor stores & restaurants which serve liquor at the edge of town. But, that's what keeps the atmosphere from getting all seedy like Wildwood.

Ocean City, NJ used to be "closed" on Sundays too....until well into the 1980s. The rides, shops, and arcades on the boardwalk had to shut down at 11:59pm on Saturdays. Most sit-down restaurants and some grocery stores were open, but they were limited as to what they could sell on Sundays. For example, I think you could be served a whole pizza at a table, but you couldn't just get a slice at the counter. Grocery stores could sell staples, but no prepared foods. (Some small places openly violated the blue laws. The fine for getting caught was less than the profits they made on Sundays.)

I love Ocean City. I'm thinking of moving there from Long Beach Island.
