Dear Friends,
Tomorrow, the 1st of February 2007: Participate in the biggest mobilization of citizens against global warming! The Alliance for the Planet [a group of environmental associations] is calling on all citizens to create 5 minutes of electrical rest for the planet.

People all over the world should turn off their lights and electrical appliances on the first of February 2007, between 1.55 pm and 2.00 pm in New York, 18.55 for London, and 19.55 for Paris, Bruxelles, and Italy. 1.55 pm in Ottawa, 10.55 am on the Pacific Coast of North America.

This is not just about saving 5 minutes worth of electricity; this is about getting the attention of the media, politicians, and ourselves. Five minutes of electrical down time for the planet: this does not take long, and costs nothing, and will show all political leaders that global warming is an issue that needs to come first and foremost in political debate.

Why February 1? This is the day when the new UN report on global climate change will come out in Paris. This event affects us all, involves us all, and provides an occasion to show how important an issue global warming is to us. If we all participate, this action can have real media and political weight.

Pass this on. Please circulate this call to your utmost ability to your network.

I know....

but one small step for humankind...and a GIANT leap for our PLANET???? :hippie:

Sounds good....I'm in!!!

I would and I support this 100%... and I will bring it up to my professors, but sadly I have no real power to do this since I will be on campus =(. I will spread the word though as much as I can!

I am a HUGE supporter of doing what you can. I really, really hope to go into environmental and green design when I graduate!

Well I work in the power industry for a company that supplies components to the power plants, gas, coal and nuclear...so I will be turning every light on during that time.

what's next? not buying gas on Sunday?

Sweet idea, but I'm out. Good luck starting the revolution.

Hmm...I am definitely going to do this tomorrow, but I think I may have to "cheat"....I don't think I can move my fridge to unplug it. ;) But, I will do what I can.

No offense, but I don't see how this would help at all, considering that it costs more in power just to turn some applicances on than to just keep them running. More energy might be wasted than conserved in this 5 minute "blackout." Sorry, I just fail to see any evidence of how this would help conserve power...

If you find any references, I'd gladly like to see them, but until then I have my doubt.

what does that do to the power company? When they are pumping out the huge average amount then it stops, then it starts again?

I would rather make real changes all year long...

::yes::

I don't know about you guys but I am not waiting until Feb 1. I am making my contribution right now. I am turning off the lights and going to bed!

Hmmm... I wonder where our building's breaker box is? Could be fun actually. ;)
