I don't think it is as much about "conserving power" for five minutes as it is about making a statement. If worldwide power consumption goes down significantly during that 5 minute window, it expresses a statement about how many people are concerned about the state of things.

With all the global warming, I wonder why I'm sitting here right now and looking at ice falling from the sky here in Georgia? I am immobilized right now due to the ice thats been falling since 3am....not snow....ICE. Sorry. I'll be keeping my heat on right now but thanks. And I agree with others. Its like going on a diet for 5 minutes. Makes life changes....don't just inconvenience yourself for 5 minutes.

We are changing our light bulbs over to the new ones, but I will not participate in the 5 minutes. It reminds me of the folks think they are helping the homeless by living in a box for a night, then going back to your cozy house. Whats the point other than self-righteousness? It does nothing IMHO.

flourescent light bulbs contain Mercury which is poisioning our planet, killing fish ect.
incandesent bulbs do not.

No, it's akin to the "Great American Smoke out", or whatever. I imagine most people who are turning off completely ARE conserving in other ways....they are the ones who care. It is simply to show the sheer number of people who are concerned....hoping to catch the heads of those in power.

As far as the lightbulbs....been there, done that over a year ago. And bought our last car based primarily on fuel efficiency, switched our appliances to more energy efficient ones and our air conditioners to non-freon, very efficient ones (when they needed to go). We also installed programmable thermostats and replaced our exterior landscape lighting with solar ones.

Thanks, I did not know that. But reading a little it says coal fired energy plants emit mercury as well. Using the CFL bulbs will cut the emmisions by more than half, only from requiring less electricity. But since they do contain mercury they should be disposed of properly. Not in regular garbage.

Thanks to the efforts of the media and the international community, people who question the existence of global warming, which is still an unproven scientific theory, are made to look like members of the Flat Earth Society. How could anyone possibly think there is no such thing as global warming? Forget the facts...forget the science...it's all about emotion, and the anti-capitalist agenda.

Look .. I'm not denying that the Earth's climate has warmed. It has. Perhaps by as much as one degree. Why, though, are so many people so eager to acknowledge that the earth is warmer, but they'll deny that the sun is and has been hotter than usual for the past 15 years or so? Why no acknowledgement of the increase sun activity? Because to admit that would be to admit that this may be the reason for what we call global warming.

There are really two elements to the global warming crowd. On the one hand we have the scientists, on the other hand the political activists. The scientists know that as soon as they acknowledge the role of increase solar activity in global warming their research funds will dry up. Much of these research funds are tied to the idea that global warming is caused by the actions of man. The political activists behind the man-made global warming idea have a goal .. .and that goal is to slow the evil machinery of free enterprise. They are, at their core, anti-capitalists; newbie socialists and remnants of the old world-wide communist movement.

But I don't think you can draw the conclusion that global warming doesn't exist based solely on a few hours of sleet in Georgia (when, really, this has been the warmest winter overall that I remember, and I've lived here my whole life).

IMO the jury is still out on global warming, but easing back on consumption must be good for the soul -if not the earth. This is why at our house we try to do things that make sense in the area of conservation; but at the same time we don't have a cow if someone accidentally leaves a light bulb on.

I wonder how many people took part. I consider myself fairly well informed but I didn't hear about this 5 minute deal until I opened this thread, which, incidentally was too late for me to participate even if I wanted to.

Right now, it is 29 degrees F here. There is no way I'd turn off the heat in the hopes that it might get colder.
