Tolls: Visitor Pass or Toll-By-Plate?

For our upcoming trip to Disney/Disney Springs/Premium Outlets, I believe that we will only be passing the toll/roads on the way to and from the airport. We will have an Alamo car rental. Would it be best to sign up for the Toll Visitor Pass or is it best to use ‘Paying by Toll-By-Plate’? Thanks!

Using the Visitor Toll Pass will be cheaper than Toll-By-Plate. VTP charges you the lower electronic toll rate and no service fees. Toll-By-Plate will be the higher cash rate plus fees charged by Alamo.

While this is true, it sounds like the OP is making a quick trip with only 1-2 tolls, IMO it may not be worth the hassle for the OP to obtain a visitor toll pass for such a short trip, while there is a service fee for the toll-by-plate, it will likely be nominal for such a short trip..

Absolutely the VTP is the cheaper option. The only reason I would use the rental company's toll by plate is if someone else was paying for it, or if you value your time at over $600/hr. It takes an extra 10 minutes to get and use the VTP, less if you're flying in on SW, and could save you close to $100 depending on rental company policies.
ETA: Just looking at Alamo's toll policies, they aren't bad. $3.95/day used plus the tolls. $8 plus the extra cost of the toll charge being twice as much. Call it $15, for ten extra minutes is an hourly rate of $90. I would do the VTP, but I understand everyone has their own calculous about these things.

AFAIK The VTP is only available in the A side of the terminal. It will take more then 10 minutes if your flight uses B side of the airport.

It might be worth it, most cases. OP is looking at an extra $8 + toll difference. Will the toll difference really be $7?

OP
If you pass by the VTP kiosk go for it. I wouldn't tour MCO to save $10.

It's 10 minutes at most. Instead of going down to 1 from baggage claim you go back up to 3 and walk over to the other side and then down to 1. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes, two minutes to get the pass from the kiosk and maybe 1 more to add the rental to the VTP app. If you don't have checked bags then there it might take an extra 1 minute to go from the airside exit of B over to A1.
Roundtrip tolls on 417 is a difference of $6.08.
I'm coming in on United next Wednesday and using VTP, I'll call it 50/50 whether I can get down to 1, get the VTP and make it back to the baggage claim before my bag even comes out.

Thank you. We will be staying at the Hyatt in the airport and then going to Alamo for our pickup in the morning. Would we be passing by the VTP area in the airport? I definitely don't mind paying an extra $10-$15 for convenience/time savings. Thanks again!

Getting the VTP is a no-brainer for us. The folks there are helpful and friendly, and drop off is a breeze. We almost didn't get it one time, figured we'd just stick to non-toll roads, but somehow I got turned around and not only did I end up on a toll road, but it was cashless. We were renting from Dollar (I think) and that mistake would have cost $15- for each day of the rental, not just the day we actually used it- plus the toll. So glad we had VTP, and so glad it's BACK after the pandemic!

Download the app. Kiosk is on level 1, A side of the terminal. Center, near door to rental garage
Do we have to tell the car rental company that we are using VTP so that we don't get double charged by Toll-by-Plate as well?

No, if the tolling system registers the transponder it never even looks at the plate.

If the rental vehicle has a physical transponder already mounted on the windshield, there should be a slide mechanism that you need to move to cover it so it won't be read at any toll plaza. Most rental companies use toll-by-plate, but there is a small number that use physical transponders.

We have used VTP every trip since they started offering at the airport. If you're not hauling a carry-on and walk at a brisk pace (not just leisurely meandering) it's 10 minutes at MOST. Our usual plan is that I go pick up the toll pass while DH goes over to baggage claim to grab our suitcases any by the time I get back over to B side to meet up with him he has just gotten our luggage and we go directly out to get our rental car. If we HAVE to use the rental counter and there's a line, DH gets in line while I get the toll pass and then whoever the rental car is booked through stays in line while the other one goes and gets the luggage.

Be aware that it can take up to a month for the $10 "tag fee" to get refunded after you turn it back in at the airport.

Thanks! We are staying at the Hyatt in the airport the night we arrive (arriving around 10pm). Should we be able to pick up the VTP at that time to save time in the morning?

If you travel to FL often enough or even have a use for it in other areas, you may look in to the SunPass Transponder.
We got one of those and just stopped worrying about any of it.
Cheapest option there is
And we have no toll roads at home
But, we travel to FL enough and can use it if we drive to Atlanta so that alone made it worthwhile.
With the agreements in place it can be used pretty much up and down the east coast, and then some.
It's not free but you save approx 25% on tolls so it can pay for itself pretty quick, especially over pay by plate on top of rental car charges

I did that last year and forgot my transponder in the rental car. Cost me $23 to have the rental company ship it back to me. Unless I'm really pressed for time and coming in on B, I'll take the small amount of extra hassle to use the VTP. I've got a trip Wednesday where I'm meeting a co-worker at MCO, he's going to go pick up the VTP in the half hour between when he lands and when I do.

Don't you turn back in the visitor's pass? So you're still left with something to remember to retrieve from the rental car, no?
Guess it's cheaper if you forget again?

I am picking up an Avis rental car in Port Canaveral after the cruise. Will I be able to avoid tolls going North from there? Would it be worth it to bring my EZ Pass transponder?
I will be at the airport (coming in on Southwest) the week before if that is important to know.

Correct, if I forget the VTP hangtag it costs me $10, if the rental worker finds it is really nice maybe they just drop it in the return and I'm out nothing. It also doesn't belong to me and isn't connected to an account with my name address and credit card.

If you're driving from Port Canaveral north on 95 to GA there are no tolls. You can only use the VTP if you are renting from one of the 10 companies that has their vehicles onsite at MCO.

If there anything I should waive from the rental car agency? Since I know I am avoiding tolls, should I select pay by plate? Any helpful hints are welcome!

Thanks!
