Today's walkout....

It affected me, in a GOOD way! We had way less traffic on the freeway today. I was surprised! There were a few demonstrations in our town. The group I saw had about a dozen people, all waving big Mexican flags and a couple tiny American flags. Their signs were in spanish so I don't know what the heck was written on them.

One carwash and a taco place was closed. Everything else seemed business as usual. Attendance at school was close to normal, although I did have a few students miss school beacuse of the protest.

You know, I have a friend who just became a citizen a few weeks ago. He has been here on a work visa for years from Australia. He went through all the legal processes, took the test, and EARNED his citizenship. I think it is a huge insult to him that people think they should have the same status/rights just because they came here.

We didn't notice a thing here in Richmond. It was business as usual. I heard on the news that a couple of hispanic stores closed but I have no idea where they are.

I heard them interviewing an illegal at a rally today and their quote was "Just because we are illegal doesn't mean we are a criminal". errr.. umm.. okay. Have you LOOKED up the meaning of the word "illegal"????

What's next? We have rallies and a boycott by illegal aliens that want special rights. Maybe next shoplifters can rally for rights to steal more. Then drug dealers can rally for extended "districts" and less police presense.. sheesh. Lets get everyone that breaks a law a special day and get them special rights to make what they did wrong "OK". :rolleyes2

Nothing would surprise me. What I don't understand is why the media seems so complicit in this. They have gone from calling them 'illegal aliens, to undocumented aliens, to immigrants and this somehow was "an immigrants rights movement. What rights do they think they have in a foreign country. I invite them to go home.

I'll help you address those invitations ;)

Now if they would only boycott the clinics, the emergency rooms, the hospitals, government services, criminal activity, I just might support that.
I'm with ya on that one! Seriously though, it's sad that it's come to this. I wish Americans all over the country would take to the streets like the illegals have and demand that our laws be upheld. Then maybe the politicians will listen. I'm not talking about anti-"anyone" rallies. I'm talking about "Americans for the enforcement of American laws!" rallies.

Didn't really see any impact here either. I wonder what the next protest will be??

Didn't see any impact here, other then the 10 - 15 protesters eating at Jack in the Box while I was eating my lunch. Kinda funny, since wasn't part of this protest suppose to be them NOT spending any money today too, not just not going to work/school.

Schools here were basically deserted--my dd loved it because they had extra recess for the few students who were there. I wasn't at stores or anything, so I don't know if there was really a financial impact.

I'm all for people taking a stand and trying to get some laws changed--this country is built on the voice of the people. Our community is mostly made up of illegal immigrants and I think most of them are hard-working people here trying to just have a better life and achieve the American dream. I wish it was easier for them to be legal so they could be sharing more of the tax burden.

However, I wish this would have been a letter writing campaign or something else though. Or sure, don't be consumers for a day if you want to prove a point about financial impact. Something just doesn't sit right with me about taking kids out of school and not showing up at work in protest. It sends the wrong image, in my opinion. It seems like it doesn't make your people look 'good' in representing the cause. Seems to make a contradictory point if you're trying to say that you're all hard-working and educating your children, yet you take a day off work and pull your kids out of school. You can upset employers who otherwise might write a letter in support of you; you're hurting the school that is educating your children free of charge and needs your children's attendance to receive that funding to educate your children; not to mention that like many people mentioned here, you're giving others an opportunity to have better commutes and shorter checkout lines and to think that maybe it would be nice if illegals weren't in the country.

And it especially doesn't sit right with me if people are being anti-American and burning flags, although I didn't hear of that around here.
