Today's walkout....

they are burning the american flag and waving the mexican flag.... :furious: that is going tooooooo far. Isn't it illegal to burn the flag unless it is in a retirement ceremony?

didnt say they didnt offer, just said we didnt see it here ..... and people that were just given fema trailers after being in tent for 6 months ARE being told to move out of them, touchy subject around here, I could tell some stories that would make you sick to your stomach, from all along the gulf coast from florida to texas .........

Our immigration system is broken, we and the government have ignored it for years, and now it's coming back to bite us. If we passed sensible reform, we wouldn't have this mess.
What is "sensible" reform to you?

Before we pass more laws, we need to enforce existing laws, which are not currently being enforced.

For example, in Philadelphia, the chief of police has said that he will not report illegal immigrants to the INS if they are arrested. The chief of police! If you can't get the police to enforce the laws, what good are they?

I know people in this situation from the hurricanes in 2004. Our goverment needs to get its act together as do the insurance companies. :furious: Sorry to say this is not just a Katrina phenomena.

Okay I promise I am done going off topic.

If you're going to waive your flag (no matter what country you are from) and burn the American flag than go back to where you came from. You say you want to live here and be free, yet you destroy the symbol of this country?

Burning the flag is not illegal. It is considered as part of the freedom of speech. Yet I will never understand how anyone who wants to be a citizen of this country could burn the flag that represents this country.

There's supposed to be more in Chicago, but we live right outside of Aurora, which is a pretty big immigrant center in the suburbs.

I wish the protesters all the best. I don't think our system is perfect, but I know I'm ashamed of how our official policies treat immigrants and I'm even more ashamed of the ingorant, xenophobic vitrol being spewed by some of our "fine citizens". :sad2:

the traffic in chicago is horrible now. i live 25 miles north of downtown out of the city and in the burbs.

at 11:15, my friend and i went to 6 different resturants to grab lunch.
these are diners that are very popular. one is a 24 hour place near the major hospital in town. all 6 were closed .......sign on the door, "closed today, will reopen at 5 am tuesday" closed for the rally.

i ended up at mickey d's for a bite.

yea, the northern midwest is seeing some action on this rally.

I love how some of the posters mentioned that some of the people who took off to support the rally have offered to work a double shift and stuff!! So much for putting a dent in the economy if they're not willing to put a dent in their own pocket even if for one day and for their good cause----I agree with the other poster===America needs to take care of her own before we take care of others but they seem more interested in hurting the feelings of those others than enforcing the rules that are supposed to prevent this from happening------If you can't vote you should have absolutely NO say in any way this country is ran and who we keep and who we kick out!

~ There was another report I heard yesterday about how illegals can't get a driver's license, yet they own cars and those cars are registered. Why is this being allowed to happen?

I can answer part of that--I was rearended in 1999 by what was apparently an illegal. He was in an awful hurry to exchange info and be on our way. Luckily a witness had already called the police. His driver license had a post office box as the address and his name was listed as D. Alan Jackson. The registration for the vehicle--yet another PO address but not the same as the DL, and it was registered to Sandra Dee Morales. OK---even before the police pulled up I KNEW there was something suspicious going on. And SURPRISE--the insurance info was bogus. :confused3

Actually, they are coming in "off the clock" tomorrow to empty the garbages and clean/stock the cafe and bathrooms. I guess that didn't transmit in the "volunteer" part of my post.

They work for a subcontractor, so I'm accepting their offer. They are truly some of the most conscientious and hard working people I've ever met.

Continuing off topic....

Here in Vero the complex next to us has hundreds still displaced since 10/2004. The insurance company has gone bankrupt, isn't paying any more claims, and construction workers won't work for nothing. This complex and four others, customers of the same company, have gone to the Insurance Commissioner to try to get satisfaction. It's not pretty and won't be resolved soon.

Returning to the main topic.....

I haven't seen too much of an impact here in St. Louis--traffic seemed about normal (though I wasn't out during the morning rush, so I don't know what that was like) and the mall I went to was jammed, certainly more so than it would be in the middle of a normal Monday.

I went to my gym this morning, really crowded and lots of traffic on our little roads here on Cape Cod. We went to BJ's to do some shopping, I saw landscapers working and it was crowded. Then we went out to lunch at a small tea room, no impact there, and I did not see anything that I noticed being out of the ordinary...

I will be watching the Boston News and will report what I hear from that. I asked my daughter who works in the financial area of downtown Boston if any restaurants are closed or if she saw any activity, she tells me nothing that she saw..of course she is working in her office and would not see anything..

There is probably activity outside the State House and near Boston Common, but I will not see that until news later on tonight..

My daughter gave me this link of what is planned:

http://www.boston.com/news/local/ma..._locally_for_national_day_without_immigrants/

At lunch today, we did see a group of people handing out flyers at Post Office Square. Not as many as they made it seem like there would be. And we did notice that the Brazilian place (Chacarero) was closed, but other than that, I didn't notice anything.

My husband did just call me to tell me that our trash wasn't picked up today. I told him that it'll stay out there because I have no intention of bringing it back in the house and since the city didn't notify us, it's not my problem. They can deal with it. There's a big issue in our town regarding the trash. Late last year they made recyling mandatory. No problem. But they also began limiting the amount of actual trash you could dispose of each week and you can only use a certain size trash barrel - which is an odd size. It's just a big fiasco, so my own protest is to leave my trash out there until they pick it up.

My daughter’s 1st grade class was missing 12 kids. Picking her up from school was great.. not as much traffic.

I know a Spanish grocery stored closed for the day... I am not sure how that is supposed to hurt everyone.

I was going to ride downtown to see if the day laborers were on their normal corner but I forgot about it.

Just got back from Framingham & the Natick Mall here in MA. Didn't notice anything unusual. Parking lots just as full as usual. Didn't notice any stores closed on Rt 9 -- and we were looking.

FWIW, our store was easily 5 times busier than it's ever been in the couple months I've been working there. I don't know if it was done on purpose tonight, but people were buying, and buying a LOT.

Now if they would only boycott the clinics, the emergency rooms, the hospitals, government services, criminal activity, I just might support that.

I was watching the news here and one immigrant said she was supporting the ban because all she bought was one bottle of water. This made no sense as the ban was not to buy anything. If all of them just bought one thing then the walkout becomes a major flop.I couldn't help but laugh when I saw her. Not exactly supporting the walkout are you? :lmao:
