Todays Oprah Show.. do you think it's too soon?

Why don't you think it was appropriate to have the police there? I know they were doing their job but it gave the family an opportunity to thank them. Not that they needed or looked for thanks but it helps to the family when they can thank them.

My dad was a cop for 34 years. He'd NEVER take credit for solving a crime. No matter what...he'd have commended everyone else and said he was just doing his job. I'm really surprised that the Kirkwood PD allowed these cops to appear on the news and on Oprah. That's really rather odd for our area. The police departments have a spokesperson or the chief speaks to the media. Kirkwood's chief has been silent on this (that I've seen). I know the LT that usually speaks for Kirkwood and that person hasn't been interviewed once.

These 2 cops were on local tv stations (and picked up by some national media) less than 24 hours after the boys were brought home (which was almost 24 hours after these Kirkwood cops stumbled onto them)

I think that they are taking a little too much credit for their role in the case, that's all. I don't think that it is appropriate for a law enforcement officer who WILL be called to testify in maybe 3 or 4 trials to speak at all about the case before the trial.

From what I understand, the family absolutely went broke, almost spending every last dime they had in their search for him. Perhaps they want to set up a fund that will provide for his mental health care and education on an ongoing basis. He has had no education in almost 5 years. There are a lot of gaps. I keep thinking of the Steven Staley case. He was found after 7 years and it was tragedy for the family since the day he was abducted until the day he died.

I saw last night on the news that there is a trust fund set up for Shawn to help with tutors, counselors etc. to help him in his recovery.

Plenty. The metro St. Louis area has several million people. My neighbor has a crappy white truck w/ a camper top.

Did you report it, or did you make your own judgement?

BTW, I know the crap that drives around Missouri. I live in St. Louis.

Did I report my neighbors non-functional truck? No. It's up on blocks in his garage and hasn't moved in a year. There was no reason to burden the police with that. There was also no way to report every white truck I saw during the time Ben was missing. Call 911 from my cell phone?? Hey, I just was a crappy white truck heading North on I-55. That would help. If my neighbor's truck was functional- I absolutely would have called and I'd have probably knocked on their door too.

How can you even suggest that the police knock on the door of every owner of every white nissan truck in St. Louis- if you live here, you know that would be next to impossible to accomplish.

I think that the investigators did an OUTSTANDING job. The Franklin county sheriff's office, along with the FBI and the Highway Patrol did everything humanly possible to look for Ben. I just don't think that the 2 cops in Kirkwood were the heroes in this story. Confronting Devlin and then allowing him back in that apartment for more than 12 hours with those kids could have resulted in a very very different ending to this story. A good cop knows when to back off and allow specialists to take the lead in something. Thankfully they got lucky in this case.

I think it is terrible and I think it is a sad reflection on society that we now have all our major news networks reporting to us every 24 minutes "Parents think he was "probably" sexually molested but he hasn't revealed the details yet." I have no doubt that he probably did suffer something horrid, but that story is HIS to reveal when and if HE feels like it.

I think that 5 years from now, when those kids are adults and have had plenty of therapy, if they then decide they want to take their story on Oprah -- good for them. Until then --- it just SICKENS me like I can't even describe.

Don't even get me started on how I feel about seeing Elizabeth Smart's Dad on the TV every morning now hawking home security systems.
ITA-these people are as sick as the kidnappers.

I have been thinking about this the last couple of days and I have to believe the parents are suffering from PTSS or something to have agreed to such a dog and pony show. That boy needs some anonymity right now, not the bright lights from "inquiring minds". I know there will be others that will not agree with my take, but IMO Oprah used that "judgmental tone" she uses when she interview guests you know she does not "appreciate" when asking Shawn questions, like what he did during the day and he answered "slept".

How about an apology from Montel and Sylvia Browne? I wonder if anyone remembers how the "psychic" Sylvia Browne said on Montel that Shawn was dead and buried under a rock. James Van Praugh got it wrong too.

Those people should be ashamed of themselves! They need to be exposed as the fakes they are. That is sickening.

I feel so sorry for Shawn. I have an 11 yr old DS and it breaks my heart to think that someone could take a child and terrorize him so much that he doesn't think escaping is an option. What a nightmare he must have lived. The molester needs to be put behind bars and never released to do this to another child.

It's a psychic! They accepted the invite and the "reading". Did they really expect the psychic to know where he was? Granted they may have been desperate and would listen to anyone but I think if anything they are very grateful that was an incorrect read. ;) I don't understand why they were in Atlanta with Larry King, I wouldn't leave my child's side for a long time after 4 years of loss.

At my risk I have to comment. It is a myth to say that pedophiles are themselves molested as children. Most of them were never molested.
I was abused as a 13 year old by a pedophile. Unless you have had this happen to you then it is hard to understand. It was not untill my 30s that I could look at this and research pedophiles extensivly. Pedophiles kidnap children but also become friends with young children and "groom" them for there pleasure later. They choose children to victimize that are easy pickings. Examples: broken homes, abusive parents, parents always working and never home. Almost all pedophiles are men and men pedophiles are different then women. Most men its about sex and the conquest. Women its for love. I feel that the pedophile that got me really did love me. Sounds odd doesnt it. But heres another odd thing I loved the pedophile. He screwed me up so bad that it took me years to get through it. They know what to say and what to do to get your trust and boy do they exploit it. My mother and father were seperated at the time this happened and I never told my mother untill I was 35. She was beside herself with grief. Blaming herself because she did nothing at the time. She thought this man was just being kind to me because my father wasnt around anymore. This was back in 1969 and children didnt talk about those things. Plus I was told by the pedophile he would kill my mother if I told her. I put up with his abuse for 8 months and then I stopped it. How? I threatened to go to the police.
My DH and I never had children, we couldnt. But I do the next best thing I work in a NICU and try to help save babies. I also am a huge, huge proponent of tough laws and stopping internet predators. You cant stop a pedophile they cant be reformed, they need to be put in prison for life. As to the pedophile that got me. He died in 1970 in a car wreck. I really really feel for those boys. Its hell. But they are survivors like me not victims. Sorry this was so long. I cant believe im posting this.

I am so sorry to hear of your abuse. There are no words that really convey the right feeling.:grouphug:

Now after having said that, I am going to disagree with you. I too have studied this subject very thoroughly.

Good, valid studies on the origins of pedophilia are few and far between. In fact they are actually non-existent.

The most valid studies say many pedophiles were victims of abuse themselves. No studies say that all pedophiles were victims.

The actual numbers seem to range between 1/3 and 2/3 of all known pedophiles admit to being sexually abused as children. Now if you factor in the valid fact that most people who were sexually abused as children do not admit to it, you see where the numbers grow. Also a pedophile is only caught in what is it 1/260 some children? Therefore for every child that admits that so and so sexually offended him, there are over 250 more victims of that one person, out there not talking!

They are some pedophiles out there that swear they were never molested as children. But when you look at their backgrounds, their childhoods are far from what anyone would perceive as normal. They almost all admit to extreme physical abuse by someone in the family during childhood. What that kind of abuse does to one's brain is a whole other area of development of personality. Those children frequently become adults with antisocial disorders and those kinds of problems include but extend beyond sexual deviancies.

I will agree that most pedophiles are men and that men offend for different reasons than women.

I also believe that pedophilia is not curable. I can not find any program that seems to work on the majority of offenders on a long term basis.

I think the laws in this country need to change if we are going to protect the next generation of children from this crime. We need to find a way to stop the pedophilia population from expanding at the present rate. One of the most effective ways to do this is to give a life long incarceration to an offender after his first offense against a child and not allow him the chance to continue with more victims.

I also know that we need to do something with juvenile offenders. I am not talking about two teenage kids who have intercourse. I am talking kids, normally males, who are age 16 or older, who offend children and babies under the age of 11. Right now most of these offenders receive "treatment" in a juvenile facility and are then released right back into the population with their identities protected because they were kids themselves. When they turn 21 their records are expunged and they are free to enter into society to offend again and again until they are caught in what the law considers their FIRST time! Something needs to be changed!

I know I have strong opinions on this but I have every reason to have these feelings. I am working hard at getting the laws changed!

Sterilizing the pedophiles is the only way to cure them.

How does preventing their semen from containing sperm going to stop them from offending?:confused3

If you mean that they should be castrated, again how is that going to help they still have sexual organs and fingers or what ever other tool they desire to use!

Maybe there is a silver lining here? I think that these crimes occur way too often and punishment is way too lax. Maybe the publicity will help get stricter laws passed? One can hope at least.

I don't know what the parents were thinking. I try not to judge someone since I'm not in their position but I don't understand it.

Why waste the tax payers hard earned money Sterilizing the predator?

There's only one sure fire way to cure a pedophile and make sure he never touches a child again. It's quite simple and very effective.

You put him 6ft under ground in a nice comfortable coffin and you will never hear a peep from him again. I guarantee without a doubt, he won't be a problem anymore.

People make the mistake in thinking rape and sex is on the same page. It's about violence, control, and domination over your victim. I read a couple books on the subject and they helped change my opinion on the matter. There's times when the pedophile or rapist uses man made items to assault their victims. Having sexual organs doesn't stop a mentally deranged person intent on harming their next victim.

I agree with this. It's disgusting how these people (well, they shouldn't even be called people) get away with this.

And :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: to Poppinsme and anyone else who's been through this. :(

I'm a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. This is more accurately shows how I really feel.
