On October 16, 1916, Margaret Sanger opened the first birth-control clinic, in New York City.

On October 16, 1962, the Cuban missile crisis began as President Kennedy was informed that reconnaissance photographs had revealed the presence of missile bases in Cuba.

On October 16, 1987, rescuers freed Jessica McClure, an 18-month-old girl trapped in an abandoned well for 58 hours in Midland, Texas.

On October 16, 1999, a New York Air National Guard plane rescued Dr. Jerri Nielsen from a South Pole research center after she'd spent five months isolated by the Antarctic winter, which forced her to treat herself for a breast lump.

Some pretty courageous women here today . . .

I was still in High School during the Missle Crisis. Boy were we all scared.

Thanks, Deb.

I remember that Cuban missile crisis, I was 13 and it terrified me. I kept waiting for that A-bomb to end the world.

Jessica McClure doesn't seem like it was 15 years ago to me, either. Time passes fast.

Now, back to Jessica McClure. I recently saw an interview with her. She is now a lovely 16 year old. Her parents diligently kept her OUT of the media after that dramatic recue, determined to give her as "normal" a life as possble. Jessica herself has no recollection of the event; she was only 18 months old. However, she DOES have a scar on her forehead that she displays proudly as a reminder of that ordeal.
