On August 9, 1790, The Columbia returned to Boston Harbor after a 3 year voyage, becoming the first ship to carry the U.S. flag around the world.

On August 9, 1936, Jesse Owens won his 4th gol medal at the Berlin Olympics as the U.S. took first place in the 400- meter relay.

On August 9, 1945, 3 days after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, the U.S. exploded a nuclear device over Nagasaki, killing an estimated 74,000 people.

On August 9, 1969, Sharon Tate and four other people were found murdered in Tate's Los Angeles home; cult leader Charles Manson and a group of his disciples were later convicted of the crime.

On Ausut 9, 1988, President Reagan nominated Lauro Cavazos to be Secretary of Education; Cavazos became the fisrt Hispanic to serve in the Cabinet.

........mostly women, children,and old men:( :( :( :( . Our use of atomic weapons was NOT the high water mark of morality for us in WWII. However, it can be argued that ending the war without an invasion of Japan saved Millions of lives...........
