To tip or not to tip............

We tip a dollar a day per person. I don't think we are incredibly dirty or messy. I always pile the dirty towels up in a common area, throw the trash in the trash can and wipe up any spills. I just think that people that clean up after others have a not so nice job and probably are not making a lot of money and I want to show that I appreciate the job they do. I would certainly complain if the room was left dirty, so I want to compliment when a good job is done.

i generally don't tip as we don't make much of a mess, nor require extra work. We almost never, for a 3-4 day trip, remove the "no housekeeping" type signs off. We reuse the same towels, and make (roughly) our beds. If we make a mess, we pick it up. So rarely will housekeeping come in. I'm not going to tip for 3-4 days if they don't do anything.

i even throw the trash away in a common area trash too.

That said, longer trips and I might.

Do you at least tip at the end of your stay?

:thumbsup2 This is us and how we view housekeeping as well. They are picking up after us and although we are not messy by any means, we feel that they deserve a little "thank you" for cleaning up after us and getting the room ready for the next guests.

Ok.........tippers win.............I had been planning on $7 a day, there are 6 of us sharing two rooms.
Think that is sufficient?

I personally would leave $3 in each room per day unless you are really messy. There might be different maids doing each room. On check out days I usually leave a few dollars more since they do a more thorough clean....in your case I would leave $5 in each room that day.

We don't have mousekeeping come in everyday, I do ask them for more towels, trash bags soap etc give them the full trash bags. I still tip them.

Thanks to finances we don't travel anymore but when we did we tipped $1/day per person so family of 5 = $5/day. We did this at any hotel/motel, not just Disney. I like my bed to be made, new towels and the trash emptied.

As for how to leave the tip...for Disney I make up special envelopes with characters either printed on them or decorated with stickers (I match it to our plans for the day and which characters we plan to see) and printed "Mousekeeping" on it. Other hotels we put the cash on the dresser or nightstand with a note that says "housekeeping".

For Disney I get the envelopes ready ahead of time and put the cash in them. They I don't have to worry about having the correct amount of cash each day and they are ready to go.

I tip at all hotels. When it's all 4 of us, I do 5.00. When it's just me, I tip 3.00.
I put the tip in an envelope marked Housekeeping, Thank you. I put it on the pillow of one bed. I do it right before we leave the room so DH won't notice it. When he sees it, he tells me I shouldn't be tipping Housekeeping because it's not normally a tipping position and he takes it off the bed!

I tip because cleaning rooms is hard work. My niece cleans rooms part time at a resort in MN and my sister works at a hotel as manager and sometimes has to clean rooms when someone calls in sick.
They both have told me horror stories so I feel bad for anyone who has to clean rooms and deal with the heavy bedspreads.

If you want to tip, have at it, but don't look to the responses on this thread as a reason to do so. Most people don't tip. They're not going to say that on this thread though, probably from fear of the namecalling they may incur and/or looking cheap.

With that said, I don't tip. From what I have read on the DIS, Disney doesn't consider it a tipped position. They get paid more than waiters, who make less than minimum wage.

Furthermore, while I appreciate housekeepers, I don't appreciate them more than the people who stand over a hot stove at counter service restaurants or the people who are paid to clean the bathrooms in the parks. I don't see people rushing to tip them. :confused3

So, like I said, if you want to tip, go for it. You are under no obligation to do so, however.

We don't tip and especially not at Disney Because it is not a tipped position according to Disney. They are paid not figuring on them getting a tip. If I leave a ton of trash like food trays I didn't get back to the food court and all the extra stuff you accumulate at the end of a trip I will leave a few dollars but other wise I do not leave a tip.

I don't tip and don't plan on starting.

I'll bite.

We usually don't tip in hotels. When we go to Mexico, we tip because the service economy is such that people's livelihood is truly through tips (like waiters in the US). I'll sometimes tip the first couple of days at disney, but that's it. However, DH and I are in our late 20s without kids. We clean up after ourselves and hardly create much work or mess.

Thank you for having the guts to say this. I totally agree with you.

No fancy envelope - no notes - I pull the blanket back, put the pillow more in the middle, and put it on the pillow.

Hmmm........very true...............the sad thing is, it's one of those things where, if I weren't counting every single penny, it would be a non-issue, I'd do it.
Guess I feel guilty.

Both posts reflect my views exactly, thus we don't tip housekeeping.
(but YES to tipping if we ask for something extra to be brought to us or if we make or leave a mess.)

Maybe a compromise...........I'll tip on the days that the sheets are changed. That's every other day right?

I don't think it is even that often. More like every 4 days maybe?:confused3

I do try to tip every day, but some days houskeeping doesn't take it. This last stay they only picked it up half the time, and I put it in the same place every day.

I usually tip $1 per person per day, and tip daily. You can't count on having the same housekeeper every day, so it is only fair to tip every day, if you choose to tip.

Ive heard that they might not even change you sheets the whole stay you are there. So, we had a 7 night visit in Sept and by day 4 i could tell we had the same sheets, (LOs cup dirtied the sheets the first night.) Finally she also had a soak through a diaper, so I called and asked her to come and change the bedding. It was a day I was there and DH and the older two kids went to the water park. When she came, she was not real friendly at first, but as she got done with the first bed I had our LO hand her a $5 and told her thanks for comming back to do this. She was friendly the rest of the time she was in there and that is the only time Ive tipped.

I agree with it not being a tipped position. Sure, if you want to do it, great, Im sure they enjoy it! I dont plan to tip unless it is a situation where we need them to come back for something extra.

Same here, had never heard of such a thing before, except for really fancy luxory hotels.
When I told my mom my plan for tipping, she thought I was crazy!
