To tip or not to tip?

We leave for HH on Monday and I had a question about tipping at the pool bar. We last visited VB this past May and I was not sure about the proper protocol then either. If I purchase food at the pool bar (hamburger, fries, etc.) should I add a tip to the bill? I noticed a line to add a tip on the ticket. I would naturally add a tip to the purchase of an alcoholic beverage but I am unsure of the proper thing to do if ordering food or snacks. What do you guys do?

I tip. Anytime I pick up food from a bar area at home I tip as well.

In this situation I likely would. However, all of the lists I've seen suggest that tipping the tip jar as you see at many counter service places is not appropriate.

I generally do not tip at counter service or quick service or food courts. That is consistent with all of the tipping guidelines I have been able to find and what I have observed in my travels.

Nothing wrong though if you do. But I suggest that it be for something extra that they did for you.

My nearly adult children still get the USAA magazine aimed at kids. The last version had a short article on tipping. It was c/w my thinking including tipping on valet pickup and not delivery. They also had a line listing for those counter service with tip jars and specifically said not to tip in that situation.

Counter service employees typically work long hours with no benefits and receive minimum wage or slightly above. I always tip the tip jar and it does not matter to me if this is proper etiquette or not.
