To the CM's on the board: what is the one "tip" you can give us?

You didn't say exactly, but if you are in fact a character at WDW, THANK YOU!!! for making my child BELIEVE!!! and giving us such amazing family moments....

Formerly...a close friend of Goofy, the Beast, Jafar, Chewbacca and Sweetums. :)

Hopefully there were more "amazing" moments made than scary ones...Beast and Jafar could be a bit frightening to the little ones at times. :scared:

I was a character with Disney for many years (a long time ago) and I will say it was the most amazing job. Parents would often quietly say thank you and it took all I had not to say "no, thank YOU!" It was amazing everyday to see the joy on children's faces : )

(and yes, it is REALLY hot in there!)

Agree wholeheartedly!!:thumbsup2

lesabrowning and TallandGoofy -(and all other CMs on here, even the anon ones reading! ) I couldn't do that job- I wouldn't have the patience! Normal cast member, maybe. And though a costume would be more fun.. I really think it'd wear on me QUICK. So...from an overgrown Disney kid (who is WAY too excited to see the characters...) . thank you! :flower3:

I was a CM @ MGM/Hollywood from 1998-2002 & then at EPCOT from 2002-2004 & I miss it so much. Even going now (season passholder), if I see a guest looking confused at a map & there is no CM around, I will stop & help out. I get a weird look & thank you & then I let them know I'm a former CM & that seems to make it alittle better.

WoW!! You were friends with some very tall characters!

O/T - but I used to work at Applebee's, and I used to have the knee jerk reaction t get napkins & other condiments for tables when I was there eating. I did seat some people once when I wasn't working... Got some weird looks off that one, but I usually explained that I worked there, and just was off the clock. Probably a big no-no, but it was late enough that it wasn't terribly crowded, and most of the times people laughed at it enough to not be annoyed that no one greeted them at the door immediately..

It's really good to know past and present CM's who know all the "secrets" of Disney still enjoy the parks too!

...embrace the unexpected, and laugh along.:goofy:

Our first visit, we had an evening free w/o the kids thanks to Grandma & Grandpa. DW and I had an ADR (then called a Priority Seating reservation) at the Contemporary at 9:30 so as to watch "Wishes" from the observation deck before going back to WL. Long story short, everything went wrong at the MK, we waited 1 1/2 hrs for a ride with a typhoon for a finale. Parade's cancelled, Wishes is probably cancelled and by the time we get off SM, it's time to leave. We head for the boat dock which is fortunately covered because it's still raining. Slowly, the line moves ahead, and after over an hour in line, 10pm approaches. We eventually decide that it would be ridiculous to try for our “Extravagant Dessert On The Observation Deck” thing. We’ll go back and grab something wonderful at the Whispering Canyon Café. (Grumble, grumble, grumble.):furious:

Eventually, we become aware of the group of people directly in line behind us. They include a younger family, husband, wife, infant maybe 6 mos old. No umbrella, no raincoats, no ponchos or jackets, they’re all in t-shirts, soaking wet and chilled from the wind. The Mother has the infant in her arms trying to keep him as warm as possible. They’ve been standing in this line for almost an hour, and I realize...they’re talking about getting back to their car!:sad2:

Haltingly, I intrude and ask if they’re going to the TTC. “Yes, we are,” they reply. They’re on a day trip from about three hours drive away. I then have to tell them that this boat doesn’t go to the TTC, it goes only to the CR, FW, WL, and then back here. Their faces just fell. They were cold, they were wet, they were facing a 3-hour drive, and they’d been waiting for an hour in the wrong line. We peered down the bank in the dark to where the TTC boat loaded. The waiting dock was packed with people, but at the time it wasn’t covered, and the rain was still falling steadily. Suddenly, my wife blurted out, “The buses! They can catch a bus from the lodge.” So we tell them, “Look, stay right here and follow us. This boat goes to the lodge and we’ll get off there and take you to the bus stop. It’s a two minute ride from there to the TTC. If you go down to that dock, you’ll be waiting another hour in the rain.” They agree and finally the boat comes for us. :thumbsup2

We get to the dock of the WL and disembark. Running through the rain, we go into the main lobby. The WL tries to mimic the seasons at national parks and apparently, it’s Winter in Yellowstone so the ambient temperature of the lobby is 20 degrees. The water runs off of us and pools at our feet, freezing almost instantly. (I love AC.) We run through the lobby to keep from freezing to death, pelting down the thankfully covered walkway to the bus stop. At that moment, a TTC bus pulls up and they walk right on. Over their shoulders, with pleading, grateful expressions, they call out, “Thank you! Thank you so much!”:yay:

We didn’t even learn their names. It’s shameful, people coming in and out of your life like that, and you don’t even know their names.

Liz and I head back for dessert at WCC. We’re sitting there, eating – I don’t know, something fabulous – when we hear it: “Whompf! Whompf-whompf! Whompf!” I notice a swelling, green glow from the direction of the Magic Kingdom. “Wishes” is going off, delayed, but I’m sure still spectacular. I look at Liz, and we sigh. “Best laid plans,” right?:confused3

We created a lot of memories on that trip, and the next one. But nothing tops the time everything went wrong, and it was still alright. So the moral of this ridiculously long story is this: My agenda is not a set of laws which Must Be Obeyed. If you look around you may find the items on your laboriously constructed, exquisitely planned agenda are the least important thing in your day. And, in the words of a certain lady pirate, "They're more like guidelines, anyway." pirate:

Great story, I have to agree, I plan (for me half the fun of the trip is in the planning), and then after we've been there a couple of days, sometimes the plans just fall by the wayside and we just enjoy being caught up in the moment of something spontaneous usally at the suggestion of our DD

That's how I plan. I spend months putting everything together, then I get there and decide I don't want to do X, Y, Z right now even though I planned to. I like having the plans, but I'm ok deviating, too.

Doug, thank you for sharing a wonderful story! You know, you can't plan life, it just happens.

Next time your child or a family member asks "what is that wire coming down from the castle?" be sure to respond: "The Prince loves to watch ESPN, it's the only way he'll get it" It'll bring a laugh from just about anyone :)

We have met so many CMs who have impressed us with their kindness and professionalism. Often I have thought how wonderful it must be to work at Disney and have such an important role in the enjoyment of the visitors, and then I think how difficult their jobs must be at times. I'm not sure I could handle working the parking lots in the Florida heat, or trying to keep guests in place during the parades. Disney entertainers, too, have awed us. Disney CMs are amazing!:worship:

First, I LOVE this thread! Such wonderful tips! I'm HUGE on giving my thanks to everyone! And having a DH that works in food service as a career, we have seen these types of assumptions being made often. Let's just say, he'll still beat CEO's on the golf course. ;)

Onto the topic at hand, this my favorite tip. Take a photo with some CM's and have them autograph your autograph book, too. I did this last time when I found myself with a page "left over" and we were ready to head out of the park. They seemed surprised but happy to comply. I must say, it's one of my favorite photos in our autograph book.http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b172/Dalifriend/September%202008/FANTASTIC%20FLORIDA%20VACATION%202008/?action=view&current=STA70537.jpg&newest=1

I was working at the MK; I was feeling a little down because I don't usually work there. I felt a little left out and confused, since I didn't know the store that well, and it was quite large, and I was all alone, since I didn't know a soul working at that location.

A little boy bought his first autograph book, and I asked if he wanted me to unwrap the plastic for him, since I figured he was taking it to go get authgraphs then and there. He said yes... and then asked me to be the first one to sign his book. I wanted to cry. It was so sweet!

This kind of stuff MAKES OUR DAY. If a guest can get me a little teary-eyed (in the good way) then my day is a million times better.

Same here...I worked @ MGM in 1997. When we go now I STILL ask people if they want me to take their picture (when I see that one person will be left out)! I get funny looks too...but people are always appreciative!

I'm so glad to know that some CMs don't mind this!! We took the KTTK tour on our Disney wedding/honeymoon trip and asked our tour guide if we could take a picture with him at the end of our tour. We wanted the memory of our honeymoon trip, it was right before they changed their costumes, and he was a WONDERFUL guide! He seemed a little reluctant, so I felt bad the rest of our trip because I hoped he wasn't just complying to please a guest. We've never asked another CM since then because we didn't want them to feel obligated. I hope he was ok with it because we got a GREAT picture out of it that I have in my office even now, 4 years later!!

I've sat here all day reading this thread (it's now 11.30pm) and it's brought tears to my eyes!/

As a CM for Disney Store UK I can't really relate to what the wonderful CM's at WDW experience but I will say that taking the name of an amazing CM to guest relations really does make their day! The same applies if you get great service at your local Disney Store too - Ask to speak to their manager or even ring up the store when you get home :)

Alot of people have said things about taking down CM's names but don't forget that if you have an outstanding character interaction then this should be noted at guest services too :) Just make sure to note what time it was you met the character and it makes sure that Pluto will get an extra sctrach behind the ear that night or Timon will get an extra juicy bug to eat ;)

I haven't finished the whole thread, but I am working on it. I have also given away fastpasses to some very shocked and happy people. I tend to look for families with kids that would really appreciate it.

Thanks to all CM's who make Disney so wonderful. You all make it so special.

Our 2 DS's started pin trading 3 trips ago and this past trip (last week), they really were into it, which doesn't bother us at all. They are very polite when asking the CM's and they always get a great response back. We went to BNC to have the kitchen sink, we put our name in (45 minute wait) and then decided to go over to the gift shop at BCV. The boys looked at the pins and then asked the CM, at the register by the clothes, if they could look at her pins (of course she said absolutely). My oldest said to her: "you don't have what I'm looking for". She asked him what he was looking for. He told her and then she said: "wait her a minute". We were all wondering why, but waited. She came out of the back room with a big board of pins. She then pointed out the one he wanted. He smiled from ear to ear. He was taking off one of his pins to trade, when she said: "keep your pin". She then took it off the board and gave it to him. We couldn't believe it. It was one of those magical moments. I wish I could remember her name. Something so small, made his day. By the way, we finished the kitchen sink!

We did that 3 times last week. The reaction you get is priceless!
