I've been growing my hair from a pixie cut since July 2023.
Its to the point of what I'd call a medium hair length.

I kept my thick, straight, blunt bangs through this process.
But every 6 weeks or so they get to the point where they are in my eyes and I have to decide do I chop them agagin or grow them out so I don't have to worry about this anymore.

Don't get me wrong I like how bangs look on me and I like how it hides my part but I also feel like I'd look like I have more hair if I grew them out plus I would stop having this debate with myself every time it comes time to cut them.

Of course I know there's a period in which its gonna drive me nuts with them being in my face for a while but I've grown them out before so I can handle it.

Just curios of other's opinions on bangs in general.
If you were in my situation would you just gow them out or keep them?

...and yet you're still considering changing it every six weeks??

I think I'd go ahead and try growing them out, just to see. You can always change your mind and cut them on pretty short notice if you get sick of them. But at least then you'll know for sure.

PS - I personally don't have bangs. An expert would probably tell me I "should" because I have kind of a high forehead, but I don't want to lose the volume, and I like wearing hairbands.

I've been pondering the same. I have a high forehead and would probably look better with bangs, but I don't like hair in my eyes and my hair is fine so bangs have to be cut perfectly or they look terrible. My daughter just got bangs cut and they look great, but she has to get them trimmed every four weeks or so and I don't know if I want the upkeep. I have a friend who has bangs and they look great - I asked her opinion and she said "don't do it!"; she only still has them because the growing out process is so tedious.

I only consider it every 6 weeks because I hate having to go every 6 weeks not because I don't like them haha.

If you’ve got a nice forehead and good eyebrows, then grow them out.

Haha I don't have that nice of a forehead. Its not extra large but I do have 2 little scars. One from chicken pox and one from falling as a kid.
I also don't have good eyebrows haha. They sit very low and kinda sparce.

Another thing I've noticed is that my sisters and I look much more similar with grown out hair and sometimes I like that and other times I want to feel more individual.

Funny! I have 5 sisters, and back in the 70's we all had long straight hair on the Christmas card pictures! I had chin length hair and bangs most of my adult life, but when covid hit and my hair place shut down, I decided to grow them out. Took several months but I am very happy without them now.

It depends on the bangs, I hate those super short ones, I think it looks like a five year old cut their hair. I’ve always had my bangs the same length as my hair and it’s so much easier than dealing with bangs and I like the look better. My oldest DD recently got short bangs and although I told her they look great I really don’t like them lol.

Bobby pins are your friend when dealing with bangs that are too long. Pin them to the side, pin them back, braid them, give them a twist then swoop them. There are many options.

Do you think a style of bangs with less upkeep would suit your face such as side swept or curtain bangs? I used to have wispy straight across bangs when I wore my hair straight. Now I air dry and let my hair be wavy and found a curtain bang works better.

Unfortunately for me the growing out process is "the worst" because I have extremely fine/soft baby like hair. Ya know the kind that pins just slide out of and its always staticy etc.
So basically I have to just try to move them towards the sides and wait until they get long enough to use a headband or put in a pebbles flinstone pony tail.

My hair hates product so its hard to keep a swoop bang swooped lol.

I'm just a mess haha.

This is why I end up keeping the bangs.

Is there anything specific you do with your hair or product you use? My hair used to be very straight but has developed a wave. I have no idea how to let it air dry and make it look good!
I use a volumizing shampoo and a very moisturizing conditioner. I scrunch in the conditioner and keep it in while I do all of the other shower stuff. Instead of a towel I scrunch my hair with a 100% cotton t-shirt. Then I scrunch in some mousse (cake the curl whip) all over then scrunch in gel (garnier pure clean gel) avoiding the roots. My hair will take about an hour to air dry depending on humidity. If it's crunchy after drying, I put some hair oil on my hands and scrunch out the crunch. It sounds like a lot when I type it out, but it really is 5 minutes of hands on styling.

I try to avoid silicone in all of my products because build up will make my hair flat and kinda greasy. There are some water soluble silicones that are ok for me to use. I do clarify and deep condition once a month.

The wavy hair reddit used to have a really good starter guide.

Thank you!!!

My co-worker and I gave up on bangs during covid. I'd just pin my bangs back and they grew out quickly. I love not dealing with bangs!! My co-worker gave up after a few weeks, still has bangs!

Learn to cut your own bangs. Once you get the hang of it, it takes 2 MINUTES to cut your own bags. DONE.

Surely you've seen how your hairdresser does it. She most likely snips it to the right length, then lifts it up at a 90 degree angle or a 180 degree angle and take the tiniest bit off. This creates bangs with some layers. OR she takes the end of the scissors and while the bangs are straight down or resting between her fingers, she she makes a few snips at a 45 degree angle into just the ends.

ALL of these types of bangs trimming tutorials are on YouTube. Find the one(s) most similar to the way your haircutter does it and has the look you want, to get the most matching look. Start off by cutting the bangs LONGER than you think you will need. Like only cut an 1/8th of an inch off. This way, you get in a FEW practice cuts until they are at the length you finally want them to be. You can always cut off more. It's great practice until you get cutting your bangs down.

Remember, hair also shrinks and fluffs upward when dry, so do cut them longer when they are wet, to avoid cut too short look, when they are dry. For example, if you want your bangs to be just below your eye brows, cut them the length of just above your eyelashes. Let them dry and fluff up to see if they are the right length. If they are still too long, keep cutting (wet again) another smidge. Dry, check the length again. Once you get the length right, memorize you need to cut the length when wet.

Once you've cut your own bangs several times, then it eventually only takes the 2 minutes I originally mentioned and you are only going to the haircutter for full cuts. Good luck! You CAN do this. :thumbsup2

I used to have stick straight hair most of my life and always cut my bangs to just below the eyebrows. I'd still like to have that look since I've developed a wrinkle in my forehead. :lmao: Unfortunately, my bangs are no longer cooperating as my hair has developed an unruly wave since I have health problems now. Bangs no longer sit straight since the wave. So, I've had to go with curtain bangs since, which I hate.

I've tried gelling the bangs down until dry then combing the gel residue out. But, I forget the gel is in, and I've walked into work and sat with it on for a couple hours with the gel on my hair, and it makes my hair look like greasy instead of freshly washed. :headache: I tried using a big barrel curling iron to straightening my bangs and then spraying them in place. But, once the humidity hits my hair, the wave is back. :headache:

I've tried. Not making that mistake again. I cannot cut an even line for the life of me.

Also I already have bangs so suggesting to cut them longer is not really an option.
They are currently just starting to be in my eyes so they really only need to be trimmed about a half inch or just over to begin with.

After 3 decades grew out my bangs. I’m happy with no bangs for 5 years now. A few reasons for the grow out.

My hair texture changing with hair glitter growing in since I’m well getting older growing. I don’t want to dye my hair.

Love that DH kisses me on the forehead when we hug.

I don’t have to worry about wind messing up my bangs.

I can cut my hair every 6-8 months vs. 4-6 weeks.

I can go longer without hair washes. With bangs it was nightly. Without bangs I’ve adopted the curly girl method for hair washing.

Easier to throw hair up.
