Did they allow him to try to sit in a seat with both armrests down? If not, they should have. If he didn't fit, then fine - he should have to buy 2 seats. If he did fit, though, then his weight should not matter. Anyone who can fit into 1 seat should only have to buy 1 seat regardless of actual weight. Likewise, if you require more than 1 seat, you should pay for more than 1 seat.

Airplane seats are small for 200lb people. The gate agent knew by looking at the man and so would you if you were familiar with standard plane seats. As normal(let's not argue about what 'normal' is) sized people, I used to love it when my very small son flew between us so my husband and I were not squished into our seats. Believe me, no 400lb human would fit in a single seat. I doubt wether a 300lb person would fit.

I have flew only twice just last year, my job sent me the tickets. I am a size 20 bottom 5' 5" tall and on the larger 5 seat across plane going to Chicago, my butt fit just fine in the seat and I got my seatbelt on easily, very comfy. On the tiny plane flying home with only 3 seats total across, I had to fit my butt in a smaller seat, suck, push, tuck it in, and get buckled before my boss could sit down (embarrassing...) with no arm, leg, or breathing room. How can you look at someone and guess their weight and if they can fit in a seat or not, especially since seat sizes vary. It's just wrong and humiliating for that person.

I wouldn't be offended by any of these. If that is what you think of someone you are entitled to your opinion. Even if I disagree an opinion is just an opinion. Most of these are more subjective then things like fat, short, bald, or disabled but what is fat/short/bald to one person may not be to another.

When one is called anything, regardless of what it is, it is either factually true or it is subjective. Like I said though, my self valuation come from myself and is the only one I care about. If my self assessment of what I am differs from your assessment that is fine, we are all entitled to our opinions.

Back to the original topic, SW has been very clear about their two seat policy. I weigh 136 and know it so someone pushing the boundaries should know it. If you don't like the policy fly someone else. There is not one single solitary airport that they are the only carrier to.

I agree completely. But I'm curious as to why you use the term "disabled." That is a relative recently, PC term. Why not still use the more derrogatory terms for those who are physically impaired? Why isn't it okay to still use terms like "retarded"? After all, that is actually a medical term which was then turned into a derrogatory term. Why are people offended by that? Why do we have to use "mentally impaired" or so other term?

Maybe because retarted is just a mental issue, where as disabled could be mental OR physical. Maybe he was just combining it. Are you saying that we should go around calling people retards and cripples?

Disabled is a broad term for a multitude of disabilities which include retardation. It also is just a word.

Let's not forget this is a thread about someone "too fat to fly" so weight matters. It would be like talking about Andre Agassi's revelation a little while ago and being told not to use the term bald. It is relevant to the conversation.

Those are not physical but mental attributes. Being ignorant, self-righteous, etc. does not change how one sits on a plane, being fat does.

Did I mention I'm going to WDW in 10 days? I have to get it out of my system now since it's a surprise for the kids. Don't plan on telling them until they figure it out at some point on the car ride down. We were given permission to leave at noon so I'm going to leave now 4:00EST.

What's this got to do with the topic? We all love Disney I'm fat, you're skinny, but again, we all love Disney. Try not to get too caught up in words and who's better than who. I've been in the place where I allowed myself to be defined by my "fatness" which way back when wasn't as fat as I am now. The difference is I learned that it didn't define me and when I stopped using the fat to define me, so did most people I encountered.

I can be nice, I can be not so nice (if I haven't had caffeine), I am good at what I do and I try to overall be a good human being. I am going to guess that everyone else here does the same. So why are we letting words and perceptions get in the way? That's what we allow to divide us no matter what the subject is.

I'm going home now. Between the kids and the dog I probably won't be able to get to go back on 'til later tonight (not that the dog is on the computer, he might slobber all over it, but he needs his walk).

That's good for you both that you're ok with what people say in that they're just words however, not everyone feels this way. Some people will never feel the self-cinfidence you feel. Some people take every word people say to heart.

Again, I'm glad both of you can let things roll of your back, I am mostly the same way, but there are plenty of people who cannot.

Yes, my point (maybe I didn't get it out clearly....) is that they wanted him to buy 2 seats for just himself. Your right, they only 1 seat, and thats why they wouldn't let him fly. However, a normal size person would be allowed to purchase only 1 seat for themselves ofcourse.

Well a normal size person will fit into 1 seat so that's why they have to buy only 1. I don't get why you're outraged? He need 2 seat to fit on the plane. There weren't 2 when he got there so he couldn't fly. Simple.

I personally don't think it's right that double charge him. My hubby is a little bit smaller then he is, I can only image how embrassed this poor man has been by this.

You know I pretty much always agree with you, right? Not this time. Southwest's Customer of Size policy has been in effect - and enforced, granted more in the last few years (or at least we're hearing of more frequent enforcement) - for well over twenty years.

Nope. The obvious solution - especially in the case of a passenger such as Mr. Fa, who could not plan ahead for this trip - is to be aware of and comply with the airline's policies. Pretty tough to lose 150 or so pounds between a death and that person's funeral.
