We will have 5 days after our Magic cruise to sight see southern Florida. What have you done? What would you do? We will have our 6 year old daughter.

There are many many possibilities in the region. What are your family's interests? The one thing I would make sure and add to your list as a visit to Everglades national Park

prior to Irma - I would say the Everglades. I'm sure that it took a beating with all of that salt water coming ashore.

There are 2 different areas that you can easily visit from the Miami area: Shark Valley (on US 41) or go down to the "main entrance" south west of Homestead. The Anhinga trail is pretty awesome. You could drive all of the way into Flamingo. There are a couple of boat tours here that are enjoyable. The Backwater tour was more enjoyable than the Florida Bay tour. There are lots of "developed" (boardwalk) places to walk on the drive between the entrance and Flamingo.

Depending upon how when your cruise is - driving out onto the Key's is an experience and there are many places to stop and take a look around.

My kids (3 and 7 at the time) had a lot of fun at Lion Country Safari. It's about an hour north of Fort Lauderdale. The main attraction is a drive thru zoo (with your own car). They also have some kiddie rides and animal feeding.

Shop at Bayside Market , the zoo is wonderful but very large , Butterfly World is a little North of Fort Lauderdale ( discount tickets in Groupon or Living Social) your 6 year old will like it . There is an open top red bus tour of downtown and also Key Biscayne Boat tours where you could see beautiful homes on Fischer Island and Star Island . There are beautiful beaches all over so you could do a beach day and alternate with a site seeing Day . There is tons to do to stay busy or relax .

When is your sailing?

If within 6 months, perhaps recovery efforts. ? ? ?

Thank you for all the wonderful idea.

Have any of you gone up to Vero Beach and flown out of an airport close to Vero Beach?

We went to Jungle Island last time and I would not recommend it, unfortunately. It was very pricey (like, I almost fell over when she told me the admission price for our family of three) for what it was, which was a mixed bag. The birds and smaller animals were great, but the primates and big cats were in VERY small cages and it was pretty sad. They used to be called Parrot Island and had primarily birds and small creatures. They should have stuck with that model. The birds were amazing, but we left feeling really sad about the other animals there.
