To Color Or Not To Color?

would you let them?

  • Sure, why not?

  • I might need a little convincing, but probably would.

  • I might allow them to state their case, but doubt they'd convince me.

  • Absolutely not!

Let's say that it's summer & your kid decided that for vacation, they wanted to color their hair something wild like blue or green. They plan on dying their hair afterwords.

Would you let them do it? Why or why not?

Not sure how to vote. Depended on how old they were and whether they had a summer job or not.

If they had a job, I probably would say no because of the job.

How 'bout the option of "hoping it never even comes up!" I really hope that this is a passing fad and that by the time my kids are old enough to even think of something like that they will not be interested!!!

My boys have already been through that faze....12 y.o. was Shocking Blue and my 13 y.o. was Bling-Bling Gold!!

I'm all about self expression and individuality...as long as it isn't multiple body piercings and so many tattoos that you can no longer distinguish what the person's skin color is! When they become adults, they are welcome to do whatever they please to their bodies!

When it comes to parenting, you've gotta pick your fights. Hair color was not one we chose to fight about. It's not permanent. Of course, I have girls, but it still got pretty crazy. I agree with Blondie, it's a way of self-expression and a way to get attention. We did not allow any body piercings (except multiple ear piercings) and allowed a tattoo (at age 18). Hair color to me is just not a big deal. So, I voted that I'd let them.

I gotta go with the let em do it - course they'd have to pay for the dye and don't expect me to help, but I went through a few weird hair things as a teen.

This reminds me 7 years ago I decided to get my sisters together and have a portrait done for my parents for their 25th wedding anniversary. So I made the appointment and got two really nice silver desk frames for them to take to work. Anyway about a week before we were scheduled to have the pictures done my youngest sister dyed her hair PURPLE!!!
I could have killed her – she knew we were supposed to have these very nice pictures taken. Well we gave our parents the frames with a note saying we would have the pictures done when little sis had grown out of her “purple” phase. LOL well it’s funny now. :p But then

I don't think hair is a really big deal - it'll grow back. Unless like FOJMO said, if they had a job and the hair color might affect the job, then I'd probably advise them not to. Of course, I'd make them pay for it!

P.S. - when DS11 wanted to try different colors, we found this stuff at the salon - it's called "hair glue" and comes in all kinds of colors and it washes out!! We've had green, blue, yellow, orange, red. Great stuff!

I voted for "doubt they'd convince" because.....
well...I'd doubt they'd convince me :teeth:

this reminds me though....
Last summer...right at the end of school ....my 13 year old announced he wanted to have his head shaved bald
I let him....we left for camping in NY......he wiped out on his bike so he had the whole side of his face all scraped up
a long cut over his eyebrow....
Between that and the bald head...we got stares you wouldn't believe....kids saying Mommy look at him. I think they thought he'd been a car wreck or was dying from something

Sure, why not?? I'm only color and it's not permanent, and most importantly, ( to me ) it won't change them on the inside where it counts. SO far my boys have only wanted to change their color for Halloween and for crazy hair days at school.

sure i would. my parents let me have flaming orange and cotton candy pink hair.  :p

Just curious - how come we haven't heard from the "Absolutely not" camp?

I voted absolutely not -- but then again, my DS is two! :teeth:

I voted yes, but my dd didn't want anything permanent. We started at 11 with Kool-Aid and different temporary colors, and that seemed to satisfy her.

So far neither of my boys have wanted outrageous colors for their hair but DS #2 wanted his streaked blonde. He has black hair  . I said I would do it for him.

Well you have to leave it on a very long time for black hair to turn blonde. When his was done he resembled a cheatah:p . He hasn't asked to color his hair lately.

Why not? I'm sure I will have my time with this.. soon enough.

My parents put up with my blue streaks, black streaks, and plantimum blonde hair.. so what's a little color in your life?

I will admit it..... I am an "Absolutely not."

Actually I am more of a "NOT A CHANCE IN H-E-double hockey sticks."

I am sooooooo tired of walking through the mall feeling like I am in the middle of a freak show.

No wonder I do most of my shopping online or by mail!

:D  :D

I voted for might need a little convincing but probably would.

I only voted that way because I think I would make DS take a few days to think it over before he made his final decision. I would also probably make him pay for the coloring but if after thinking it over he still wanted it done I would most likely let him unless it was again school rules or something.

I see absolutely no problem with that. It is only hair and it can be changed whenever. I used to change my color all the time and it was the one thing that my extremely conservative mom would let us do (not even multiple piercings were allowed). She even was willing to pay for it :)

helenabear you made me chuckle.... after DH and I got married we were looking through a bunch of family photos.....

We were ROFL because his Mom's hair was a different color EVERY CHRISTMAS. And we are not talking subtle differences.... we are talking grey to black to red to blonde..... OH MY.

Thank goodness she has now decided to let it be it's natural grey.

I am just not one to color hair. Mine will be all grey - more silver hairs everyday and I am only 34. I don't care. It's going to be what it's going to be. Maybe I have such an aversion to it because I have seen so many flopped home dye jobs on HS kids.

Oh well... to each their own!

:D :)

Oh, here's an interesting tid-bit up until the mid 80s, DL would not admit people with unnaturally colored hair. Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers was denied admission because he had blue hair.

Honestly, from a purely asthetic stand point, I'd much prefer it if I had a son & he wanted green hair than long hair.
