To all you new Nook & Kindle users:

Tell me what you like about your Nook or Kindle. Can you read in bed?
Yup, no problem.

or do you need a "Booklight"?
Nope, the regular lighting that we've used to read paper books works just fine.

can you vary the size of the font?
Yes, this is so fantastic. It is like getting a large type book every time.

Do you like the variety of free books?
Given that they're free, it's hard to quibble. Having said that, I've read two books on my Kindle since I got it for my birthday, and both were free. I just purchased my first book on the Kindle.

How does the price of E-books compare to the hardbound book?
If I'm going to buy the hardcover, I'm going to by the hardcover.

Once the paperback comes out, the price of the Kindle edition seems to run about 5% less than the paperback price.

Are there any drawbacks to the one you chose (Nook or Kindle) that makes you wish you'd chosen the other?
I bought a Kindle. No second thoughts whatsoever.

I just got a Kindle on my birthday (12/30). It seems really cool and easy to read.

I have poured through all the free books that I can find and not one of them has appealed to me yet! But I am a voracious reader so I think I've read most of the older ones. I am looking for some help in finding free books besides the Top 100 that Amazon shows.

I haven't read a book yet because I have two "traditional" books that I got for Christmas that I am going to read first. In the meantime, I'm trying to figure out which book to buy first.

Yes, you can adjust the font size on the Kindle as well.

I think for most of these kinds of features you will find that Kindle and Nook have the same capabilities. They also have access to most of the same "free" books - unless Amazon or B&N run a special on something new and current, the free books are mostly going to be public domain titles easily available from many sources on the web.

The big bonus for the Nook is the ability to get library books in epub format, which Kindle does not support. The big draw for the Kindle is the text to speech and the 3G which I believe Nook does not offer outside of a B&N bookstore. Amazon also has a larger product line with the Kindle DX.

B& N runs Free days usually 2-3 times a week. One week in December is was Free Monday, Free Wednesday and Free Friday. In this week, it was all current books.

As for 3g, I can use the 3g anywhere, not just near a B&N store. I've been able to shop for books nearly anywhere I have been. (different stores, parking lots, mall).

It really is an either or decision. I'm thrilled with my Nook though.

Love my Nook! I read in bed with no book light, just the same bedside light that I used for regular books.

Big Big fan of the library option on the Nook!

I have owned both and IMO the Kindle is far better than the Nook. In fact I gave up on my Nook and gave it to a friend because I could not stand the horrible user interface.

.

I did the opposite- I got rid of the kindle and upgraded to the nook color. You can read in bed with no other light on at all- my daughter reads in the dark with it all the time.
I like the nook color due to the fact you can download library books and from what I understand college textbooks will be/are available on the nook through barnes and noble too which is a great feature- sure wish they had that when I went to college!!
Also this year ( they are pushing for late March/early April) they are releasing a whole App store for the nook color basically making it similar to an ipad.
Barnes and Noble has free Nook classes every week where you can go in and learn how to do everything on there and once the app store opens they will be doing advanced Nook classes. At the last class we went to there were over 50 people there! They did the upgrade for anyone that did not havetheirs upgraded yet and also if you stayed at the end they would put any screen protectors that you bought on for you. Its not hard to do but its nice to have them clean it all up and do that for you.
The Lend Me part of it is great too- my daughter has been swapping books with friends of hers.

I got my nook last spring and I love it. :)

At the time, only the wi-fi model was available...when the 3G/wi fi model became available, B&N updated all the "older" versions for free. :cool1:

Like CindyB said, nook users are able to use the 3G anywhere.

I'm very glad my version isn't backlit and I use a regular lamp to read by.

The 3G on the Nook works everywhere - I've never taken my Nook to my local B&N and I've used 3G to download books.

I've had my Nook since Thanksgiving, and I love it! I make the font larger and read while I'm on the treadmill - can't do that with a regular book or the pages will keep flopping. B&N has "free Fridays" with a different book for free. (I hope they continue doing this in 2011 and it wasn't just a special for the holidays.) I'm way behind on my James Patterson books, but last week one of his books was free, and this past weekend was a mystery book by an author I hadn't heard of before. Maybe I'll discover a new author this way!

I still have to figure out how to use my own photos for the wallpaper and screensaver; I read the manual and it doesn't sound too difficult, except for deciding which photos to use! :)

Only part of the JP book was free. I think it was 28 chapters or something like that. :)

Go to the E-books section, type in 0.00 free ebooks and you will get the complete list. Sort the list by publication date. You can do this on BN site too.

The college texts books are already avaliable on the Nook Study app but are not going to be available, any time soon anyway, on the Nook itself. It explains in the info that the Nook/Kindle formats don't support the options/features available for the textbooks. The Nook Study is meant to be used on a computer because you can permanently highlight information, print study guides, flashcards, etc. from the 'book'.

Apparently the entire book is available for free today. Just saw it on the Kindle Discussion board.

Which book? I have one other complete free JP book. DH loves his books. I looked on the Amazon site and didn't find anything yet.

It is titled "Tick Tock". You might get a few hits for it. One is for the first 28 chapters only. Apparently the full book came out for pre-order today, delivered 1/24.

Thanks, just pre-ordered it. :thumbsup2

The first thing I would do is try them both out in person. Target has the Kindle, B&N (obviously) has the Nook. The interfaces on the two are different. The Nook has a touch screen at the bottom, the Kindle has a physical keyboard. I did not like the touch screen at all (plus it adds a bit of weight), so I went with the Kindle. (Library books weren't that much of an issue for me. I like to keep the books I read and don't like having a timeline to read them.)

The Color Nook is a completely different technology. I wasn't interested in it at all.

DH just got a Kindle last month, and absolutely loves it!! He has the case with the built-in light, which he also thinks was a good choice.

I have a kindle. What I like is how easy it is to use. I sell nooks and it seems like they aren't as user friendly as the kindle. i read it in bes all the time with only the bedside lamp and haven't found the need for a booklight. I have a speck cover I bought at Target that is really nice.

Thanks! I just preordered it! I got my Kindle for Christmas and I think I'm going to like it a lot.

One thing I haven't been able to do and I don't know if it's possible or not, is if there's any way to look up a synopsis of the books I've downloaded on the Kindle. I've downloaded 12 books so far, but I can't remember just from looking at the title what they're about.

I can always go to Amazon and look them up but was wondering if there was a way to do it on the Kindle if I don't have my laptop with me.

I think just the opposite. The differences are minor but I think the Nook us much easier to use, as is the ordering process/download process, etc.
