to 95 or not to 95...

Driving down from central Massachusetts. Every search engine on the 'net leads us down 84 and either over the Tappanzee (sorry if this is spelled wrong) or the Cross Bronx expressway over the GW bridge, then basically 95 the rest of the way. I've seen a few posts that go thru PA and down 81 into Virginia. Is this really faster? We went that way a few years ago to Charlottesville, but came home thru DC and Baltimore, and thought the way home was quicker. We will be leaving MA the Friday b4 Thanksgiving at around 2 in the afternoon, and leaving Orlando on the Saturday after T-day, again around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. Plan to stop at 11 pm the first day each way. Any advice is appreciated!

We live in central New York State, near I-81 and we nearly always cross over to I-95 in Va, but the distances are about equal for us, for you 81 would be a lot longer, but of course you would miss all the NYC,Philly,Balt, DC, trafic.
