This show is absolutely appalling and, sadly, completely true and honest. 6 years ago, I entered my oldest daughter in several pageants. She never competed in the high glitz, make up, flippers, etc stuff as I would only enter her in the natural portion. However, many pageants had both natural as well as glitz so we met many glitz families and saw what happened 'behind the scenes.' Toddlers and Tiara's captures it perfectly.
The situation with BreeAnn and AshLyn is horrifying. How a parent can favor one child so obviously over another is beyond me and frankly, that mother doesn't deserve any of her 5 children! I can only hope that both girls eventually recognize that what mom is doing to them is wrong and can grow up to have a healthy adult sibling relationship.
When my DD was in pageants, we witnessed the tanning, heavy make up, fake hair, fake nails, painful hairdo's, etc. I saw parents sugar their kids up to make them bounce more on stage. I saw thousand dollar dresses treated better than the kids wearing them.
Why do parents do these pageants? Certainly NOT for the money! I cannot think of a single parent (including BIG winners of cars, money, etc) that has won more than they paid out. The return on investment for pageants is very minimal. Thousand dollar dresses, hundreds of dollars per hour for modeling lessons, plane tickets, make up and hair (up to $400 per pageant), fake teeth, tanning, etc. It adds up quickly to tens of thousands of dollars per year for serious pageant kids. While many claim they do it to instill confidence, poise, grace, etc, it's a lot of BS. There are better, less expensive ways to do that. I would guess that most parents put their DDs in pageants so they can live vicariously through them. They want a judge to proclaim their daughter is prettier than all the rest. They're chasing the crown for themselves for bragging rights and a boost to their self esteem.
DD participated in a total of 10 or so pageants over a 2 year span. Even though she participated in natural pageants, witnessing the glitz side of things was enough to make me sick. It's a cutthroat industry for parents, pageant owners, photographers, hair and makeup artists, dressmakers, modeling coaches, and other vendors. Back stabbing and name calling is the norm. Slander on message boards and threats of violence are commonplace. I applaud TLC for exposing pageants for what they really are. Sadly, even though these parents on the show appear horrific, many more will line up for the next season just to get their 15 minutes of fame.
