Tips on how to meet Steamboat Willie

I love meeting characters and would love to meet Steamboat Willie.

I know he meets at Mickey's house in toontown and rotates.

I heard he usually only comes out at busy times. So if I was to hit toontown up first thing when it opens, it probably wouldn't be him?

I'll be in DL May 11th and 12th.

If I ask a CM to go to his door, will they be nice enough to meet by request or are they not allowed?

Also I heard that the picture outside shows which "Mickey" is meeting but apparently isn't always correct.

Any tips?

Steamboat willie Mickey does ocassionally visit Toontown, but I was told he is one of the rarer ones to get. We were doing a VIP tour and one kid really wanted to meet him, so we waited. Even with the VIP tour requesting it, we had to get a reserved time to come back, and even then we waited 30-40 min before he was set up. They said this outfit is rare as the most common ones are regular, sorcerer, and then the one with the long tailed coat.
Please note, it is not the Steamboat Willie you see on the Mark Twain in Fantasmic!, but rather Mickey mouse in his Steamboat Willie "costume."

It took us several trips to finally meet Steamboat Willie. We asked every time we got near the door if there was any chance Steamboat Willie was there. I always got "You never know" and he never was. I finally gave up, assuming he would only be out when they were really busy and the line was very long (and I just wouldn't get in that line when it was long). The time we met him was later in the evening but the line was very short so I almost didn't ask. I finally hit it right and a CM had us step to the side and wait a few minutes then brought us in to see him.

Well that's a bummer. I guess I'll cross this off the list since it sounds like it's hard to come by anyway.

This was us too. It took us years to meet him. I always got the same answer when I asked. On our trips in July 2018 and July 2019, we randomly got him both times. I didn't even ask-- I had given that up. The parks weren't overly crowded (even though it was July) those days and the line to meet Mickey wasn't too long either. We typically just come back another time if it looks like the line will take over 20 minutes. It doesn't hurt to at least ask them-- but it never got us anywhere--- ours was pure luck.

After years of trying I finally got him two years ago on a random Friday night when waiting for Fantasmic.

I was in the camera shop trying to get a Photopass issue fixed, and the family in front of me had Steamboat Willie pics on their Photopass. I asked them when they got them and they told me half an hour earlier. I swear I never got my butt to Toontown that fast. The line wasn't even that long, but the wait was a nightmare. I kept thinking "please don't rotate please don't rotate!" When we went in and it was Steamboat I was so relieved, I almost started crying.

I've had a couple of friends that have been to DL lately and all met Steamboat Willie - totally jealous - I don't know if its because they released the steamboat popcorn bucket, so he's been out more ??

We only saw him once, but it was on I think our second trip there. My DD was all excited as she recognized the costume.
It was when there was a parade going on and we went to ToonTown instead - we hadn't even expected he would be at his house since you know he's supposed to be in the Parade but I guess he can be in two places at once?

We met him summer of 2015 - didn't even realize that he's not all that common. We were there for the day with another family, so we got some great pix!

I would love to meet him. I’ve only seen him during Fantasmic and I’ve visited Disneyland dozens of times.
